HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Sept. 27-Oct. 2 in Centre County high school sports

The postseason is off and rolling for the fall high school sports season, and so far, it’s been very kind to Centre County athletes.

Centre County golfers won three of four individual District 6 titles this week, with Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s Tim Peters being crowned the Class 2A boys champ, State College’s John Olsen the Class 3A boys champ, and Bellefonte’s Riley Clute the Class 3A girls champ. State College also won both the boys and girls district team titles. Adding to the golfers’ success, State College tennis’s Quiana Guo picked up a District 6 singles title.

State College boys golf also won the Mid Penn championship, and Penns Valley girls cross country earned its fifth straight Mountain League regular season title.

Here are some of the highlights of Week 6:

Cross country

P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola split with Hollidaysburg on Tuesday, with the girls team winning, 28-31, and the boys losing, 22-39. Jaylee Cook placed second in 23:23 to lead the girls team. Rounding out P-O’s top seven were: Kylie Timko (fifth in 25:52), Manna Potter (sixth in 25:52), Evie Raker (seventh in 26:17), Audrey Smith (eighth in 26:21), Marlee Butterworth (ninth in 26:50) and Sarah Bock (10th in 26:58). Chad Muckey led the Mounties on the boys side, finishing second in 17:52. Rounding out P-O’s top seven were Scott Frantz (fourth in 19:05), Braeden Fenton, (12th in 23:16), Shane Parish (14th in 4:09), Tyke Phillips (15th in 24:11), Grant Lutz (16th in 29:49) and Ben Meyers (22nd in 26:52).

Penns Valley: Penns Valley competed in a tri-meet Tuesday with Mountain League foes Clearfield and Tyrone. The girls team beat both Clearfield (25-30) and Tyrone (26-29), ending the regular season with a 6-0 league record (7-1 overall) and securing its fifth consecutive Mountain League team title. Anna Stitzer finished first, clocking a new course record for Clearfield in 18:56. Alexis Durn was third (23:02), Ayva Fetterolf was 8th (25:22), Ann-Marie McMurtrie was 9th (25:43) and Annie Racette was 16th (33:01). “The girls first goal of the season was to repeat as Mountain League Champions and today they achieved that goal,” coach Lynda Federinko said. “Anna once again ran a remarkable race and is now the fifth fastest girl in Penns Valley history. Ayva and Annie also ran personal bests.” The boys lost both races, 26-30 to Clearfield and 22-35 to Tyrone, falling to 1-6. McClain Reamer won the race in 18:40. Vince Smith was 8th (21:26), Dilon Reilly was 9th (22:00) and Matthew Wheeland was 15th (25:58). “McClain was determined to win his first race and outraced the competition by nearly a full minute,” Federinko said. “Another bright point of the day was Dilon improving his best time by 1.5 minutes. Vince continues to run steadily and Matthew is learning with each race.”

Bellefonte vs. BEA: Bellefonte’s boys and girls teams both competed together, along with Bald Eagle Area’s lone varsity runner Colton Wagner, on Tuesday at Governor’s Park. Both Bellefonte teams won 15-50. Bellefonte’s top boy runners were Chase Ebeling (first in 19:22), Alex Crist (second in 19:30), Alex Mansfield (third in 20:22), Aaron Carlini (fifth in 20:52), Eric Bennett (sixth in 21:30), Danny Mussett (seventh in 21:34) and Caleb Vinnedge (eighth in 21:46). Wagner finished fourth in 20:47. Ashliegh Aukerman was the highest finisher on the girls side, placing 12th in 25:08.

P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola runners took first place overall in a tri-meet with Bellwood-Antis and Central Martinsburg on Thursday. The girls team beat both teams (19-44 over Bellwood-Antis and 15-50 over Central), and the boys teams lost to both (25-35 to Bellwood-Antis and 26-33 to Central). Chad Muckey finished first on the boys side in 17:25. Scott Frantz was third in 19:04, Braeden Fenton was 14th in 22:16, Shane Parish was 17th in 23:09, Grant Luntz was 19th in 23:35, Sean Myers was 22nd in 24:02 and Carson Carlheim was 24th in 25:14 to round out the Mounties’ top seven. Jaylee Cook finished first on the girls side in 22:14. Manna Potter was third in 24:20, Kylie Timko was fourth in 24:22, Evie Raker was fifth in 24:45, Audrey Smith was seventh in 25:08, Sarah Beck was eighth in 25:31, and Marlee Butterworth was ninth in 25:34 to round out P-O’s top seven.



State College (girls): State College competed in the Girls Brown race at Lehigh University’s Paul Short Run on Friday. Marlee Kwasnica placed 13th in 18:46 out of 301 finishers, Natalie Koncoski was 47th in 19:38, Amy Devan 62nd in 19:57, Grace Morningstar 80th in 20:11, Chloe Poindexter 83rd in 20:13, Abigail Bigger 96th in 20:33 and Alex Antoniono 130th in 21:03. State College finished seventh out of 33 teams with 277.

Field hockey

State College: State College beat Carlisle 2-0 on Senior Night on Tuesday, improving to 7-2 overall and 6-1 in the Mid Penn Commonwealth division. Senior Phebe Herlocher scored both goals for the Little Lions, both coming in the second half. The Little Lions earned 15 penalty corners to Carlisle’s one. State College’s Molly Schreiner had three saves, while Carlisle’s Macenzie Mulholland had 14.

Golf

Mid Penn Championships: State College was crowned the Mid Penn champions on Monday. The Little Lions placed first out of eight teams with 318. John Olsen finished second, shooting a 74 (+2). Luke Janac shot 78, and Joey Sabol 80 to make the cut in the top 12.

P-O and Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte and Philipsburg-Osceola took part on a Mountain League meet with Clearfield and Hollidaysburg on Tuesday. Hollidaysburg won with 167; PO was second with 179; Bellefonte third with 190; and Clearfield fourth with 225.

District 6 Class 2A championships (boys): Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy junior Timothy Peters was crowned the District 6 Class 2A champ on Tuesday at Scotch Valley Country Club. Peters shot a low score of 75 to edge Bishop McCort’s Lukas Cascino, who came in second with 76. By placing in the top eight, Peters will advance to the PIAA state championships on Oct. 18 at Heritage Hills in York. Missing out on qualifying spots were Saint Joseph’s Dmitri Cornali, who placed 21st with 92, and Philipsburg-Osceola’s Oliver Harpster, who was 30th with 99. As a team, Saint Joseph’s came in third with 353. Only the top finisher, which was Tyrone with 345, will advance to the sub-regional.

District 6 Class 3A championships (boys): State College senior John Olsen was crowned the District 6 Class 3A champ on Tuesday at Scotch Valley Country Club. Olsen shot a low score of 74. As one of the top two finishers, Olsen will advance to the PIAA state championships on Oct. 19 at Heritage Hills in York. Results for other Centre County golfers were: State College’s Luke Janac (80), State College’s Max Wager (85), Bellefonte’s Keith Hamilton (86), Bellefonte’s Isaak Bloom (87), Bellefonte’s Davis Corman (88) and State College’s AJ Corson (92). State College won the team competition with 321 to Altoona’s 346. The Little Lions team of Olsen, Janac, Wager, Joey Sabol (93) and Thomas Hay (82) will advance to the District 6, 8, 9,10 Sub-Regional at Treasure Lake Silver Course on Oct. 7.

District 6 Class 2A championships (girls): Tyrone’s Cassidy Miksich was crowned the District 6 Class 2A champion on Thursday at Windber Country Club. Centre County had five golfers compete, but none qualified for the PIAA championships. Philipsburg-Osceola’s Abby Vaux shot 106, P-O’s Ivy Reed 110, Penns Valley’s Paige Dobson 112, P-O’s Olivia Hutton 123, and P-O’ s Camden Potter 126. P-O finished fourth in the team standings, with 339. Westmont Hilltop was the district champ with 288, and will advance to the PIAA state championships on Oct. 25 at Heritage Hills in York.

District 6 Class 3A championships (girls): Bellefonte’s Riley Clute was crowned the District 6 Class 3A champion on Thursday at Windber Country Club, with a low score of 89. As the district champ, Clute will be the lone golfer to advance to the PIAA state championships on Oct. 19 at Heritage Hills in York. Results for other Centre County golfers were: State College’s Amber Kissinger (second with 92), State College’s Sarah Huang (97), State College’s Hanna Kopak (102), Bellefonte’s Emmalin Pringle (116), Bellefonte’s Alexis Fravel (120), and Bellefonte’s Sydney Hamilton (125). State College won the team title with 291 to advance to the District 6-8-9-10 Sub-Regional at Treasure Lake on Oct. 7. Bellefonte was third with 325.

soccer

Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte beat Tyrone 7-0 on Monday. Hayden Walker scored four of the Raiders’ goals, while Mintesinot Borst, Matt Uchneat and Dorian Koller each added one.

BEA (boys): Bald Eagle Area lost 2-0 to Huntingdon on Monday.

P-O (boys): Philipsburg-Osceola lost 7-1 to Hollidaysburg on Monday. Carson Long scored the lone goal for the Mounties, his 13th of the season, off a penalty kick. The Mounties drop to 5-3-0.



State College (boys):
State College lost 5-1 to Central Dauphin on Monday.

Penns Valley (boys): Penns Valley shut out Clearfield, 5-0, on Monday. Goals came from: Jack O’Donald (assisted by Alex King) at 7:55; Nate Long (unassisted) at 47:55; Cedar Kimler (assisted by Cayden Merrill) at 64:26; Long (unassisted) at 64:43; and Aiden Korman (assisted Merrill) at 65:37. Each team tallied 11 shots. Gavin Robb had 10 saves for the Rams, as they move to 4-4-1 on the season. “We’ve had trouble finding the net recently,” Penns Valley head coach Ken Gore said, “so we really needed this victory and really needed to get our confidence back to know that we can indeed finish. When you’re in a slump, many times that first goal opens the floodgates.”

Penns Valley (girls): Penns Valley fell 8-1 to Clearfield on Tuesday. Ellie Brinker scored hte lone goal for the Rams (at 76:25). Clearfield out-shot Penns Valley 25-7. Noelle Webb had 12 saves for the Rams. Penns Valley falls to 3-4 (2-4 in the Mountain League).

P-O (girls): Philipsburg-Osceola lost 5-1 to Hollidaysburg on Tuesday. Schenley Farrell scored the lone goal for the Mounties, assisted by Khendyl Sharrer. Kinley Bender had 11 saves for the Mounties.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy beat Bishop Guilfoyle 7-1 on Wednesday. Spencer Gigante scored four goals, Kyle Yangula had two and Chris Forstmeier one. Luke Surovec tallied three assists and Forstmeier had two.



State College (boys): State College beat Chambersburg 2-1 on Wednesday.

Penns Valley (girls): Penns Valley beat Huntingdon 2-0 on Wednesday. Goals came from Ceci Falls (assisted by Scotty Dinges) at 45:02, and Julianna Lovallo (assisted by Dinges) at 58:27. Noelle Webb had 6 saves for the Rams. Penns Valley improves to 4-4 (3-4 in the Mountain League). “Back-to-back games are always tough, especially when both are away and especially at Huntingdon,” Rams coach Andrew Beverly said. “Every time our two teams meet it’s a close, tense battle and last night was no exception. It took us a while to settle into the game. We played as if we were rushed and panicked for the majority of the first half and struggled to get things going. But the girls righted the ship and produced a strong second half performance.”

Bellefonte vs. BEA (boys): Bellefonte topped Bald Eagle Area 2-0 on Wednesday in a Mountain League matchup. Hayden Walker and Andy Geresanko both scored goals for the Raiders. Walker was assisted by Geresanko, and Geresanko by Walker. Bellefonte improves to 7-1-1.

BEA (girls): Bald Eagle Area beat Mountain League foe Huntingdon 2-1 on Wednesday. The first goal came from Heather Leskovansky on a free kick, and the second was unassisted from Mackenzie Bickle. “Our defense was outstanding. We moved the ball great and finished our chances. Hard work won today,” BEA coach Jared Moore said.

P-O (boys): Philipsburg-Osceola beat Clearfield 3-0 on Wednesday. Carson Long had a goal and an assist, while Ashton Crownover and Alex Godin each added goals. Greg Holt had two saves in the shutout as the Mounties move to 6-3-0.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 3-1 to Juniata Mennonite School on Thursday. Chris Forstmeier scored the lone goal for the WolfPack.

Saint Joseph’s vs. BEA (boys): Bald Eagle Area beat Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy 3-2 on Saturday.



BEA vs. Bellefonte (girls): Bald Eagle Area beat Bellefonte 1-0 on Thursday. Abby Hoover scored the lone goal, as BEA improves to 5-3 overall and 5-4 in the Mountain League.

State College: State College lost 3-2 to Hershey on Monday, falling to 11-3 on the season. Singles results were: Qiana Guo(SC) def. Angelina Berg 6-1, 6-2; Ece Aydogan def. Kelly Steel(SC) 7-5, 7-5; Abby Yurick def. Madeline Miller (SC) 6-7(8), 6-2, 6-1. Doubles: Alicia Xie/Claire Tan def. Emily Zhang/Allison Norloff(SC) 6-4, 3-6, 6-2; Marissa Xu/Jordan Dye(SC) def. Emily Bryant/Deya Tewari 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.

District 6 singles: State College’s Quiana Guo was crowned the District 6 Class 3A singles champ on Wednesday in Altoona. Guo, the No. 3 seed, beat Hollidaysburg’s No. 1 Greta Rhodes (6-3, 6-1) for the title. Guo beat Williamsport’s Breanna Chicos (6-0, 6-), Central Mountain’s Kati Kwiatek (6-0, 6-0) and Altoona’s No. 2 Morgan Stevens (6-2, 6-2) to reach the finals. She’ll advance to the PIAA state tournament from Nov. 5-6 in Hershey.

Volleyball

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy beat East Juniata 3-2 on Monday.

P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola swept Central Mountain with scores of 25-16, 25-11 and 25-22 on Monday to improve to 6-0 overall. Stat leaders were: Kalista Butler with 38 assists; Reese Hazelton with 23 kills; London Cutler with 12 service points, 5 aces, and 11 digs; and Janey Johnson with 11 digs.

BEA: Bald Eagle took on the state’s No. 2 Class 1A team, West Branch, on Monday. The Warriors came away with the 3-1 win (25-18, 23-25, 25-22, and 25-22). Stat leaders for the Eagles were: Maddie Perry with 14 kills and Ava Stere and Claire Andrews each with 7; Andrews hit .467 on the night, while adding a team-high three terminal blocks; Megan Reese had 32 assists; Olivia Boone led the team with 23 digs; and Perry, Reese, Boone, and Maddie Guenot each had a pair of aces.

P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola beat Huntingdon 3-1 on Tuesday (25-18, 25-16, and 23-25, and 25-16) to improve to 6-0 in the Mountain League and 7-0 overall. Stat leaders were: Kalista Butler with 41 assists, 15 service points, and 4 aces; Reese Hazelton with 23 digs, 14 service points, and 28 kills; and Janey Johnson with 16 digs.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley lost 3-1 to Hollidaysburg on Tuesday (25-19, 14-25, 20-25, 19-25). Stat leaders for the Rams were: Cammie Upcraft with a team-high 8 kills; Kailen Winkelblech with 7 kills and 4 digs; Maddie Butler with 28 digs; Brianna Bressler with 18 digs and an ace; and Ella Hadley added 4 kills.

BEA: Bald Eagle Area swept Clearfield on Senior Night on Tuesday (25-15, 25-14, and 25-22). Stat leaders for the Eagles were: Megan Reese with 42 assists and 3 kills; Peighton Brownson with 6 aces; Maddie Perry with 13 kills; Maddie Guenot with a season-high 11 kills; Claire Andrews with 8 kills; Olivia Boone with 18 digs; Maddie Perry with 14 digs. Seniors honored were: Jocelyn Hyde, Claire Andrews, Maddie Guenot, Maddie Perry, Kamryn Martin and Megan Reese.

State College: State College beat Chambersburg 3-2 on Tuesday (25-13, 23-25, 23-25, 25-18, and 15-7) to improve to 6-1. Stat leaders for the Little Lions were Claire Jordan with 19 kills; Ashlyn Arnold with 7 kills; Kate Lally with 17 assists; Sam Shala with 14 assists; Molly Thompson with 4 aces; Iris Archibald with 14 digs; and Jordan with 11 digs.

Bellefonte: Bellefonte lost 3-0 to Tyrone on Tuesday (21-25, 25-27 and 15-25). Stat leaders for the Raiders were: Carlee Pepperman with 7 kills, 11 digs; Carley Clarkson with 12 digs; Emalee Neff with 16 digs; Madison Melius with 4 kills and 13 assists; and Tayla Miller with 11 digs.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley swept Central Mountain 3-0 on Wednesday (25-18. 25-19, 25-23). Stat leaders for the Rams were: Kailen Winkelblech with 13 kills and Ella Hadley with 8; Cammie Upcraft with 6 kills and 4 blocks; Julia Emel with 26 assists; Maddie Butler with 11 digs; Ellie Coursen with 2 kills, 3 blocks, and 3 service aces.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy swept The Grier School 3-0 on Thursday.

P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola beat Clearfield 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, and 25-20). Stat leaders for P-O were: Kalista Butler with 31 assists, 13 service points, and 2 aces;vReese Hazelton with 15 kills, 2 blocks, and 8 digs; Janey Johnson with 11 digs; London Cutler with 6 Kills and 8 digs and Jayden Perks with 4 blocks. The Mounties improve to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the Mountain League.



BEA: Bald Eagle Area swept Huntingdon (25-20, 25-22 and 25-15) to wrap up the first half of Mountain League play. Stat leaders for the Eagles were: Meagan Reese with 22 assists 3 aces; Maddie Perry with 8 kills; Claire Andrews with 6 kills and 3 blocks; Perry and Olivia Boone each with 16 digs.
