HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Oct. 11-16 in Centre County high school sports

The strong postseason continued for Centre County athletes and teams this week. State College girls tennis kicked things off on Wednesday by winning the District 6 Class 3A team title in Altoona. Then, both State College’s boys and girls cross country teams came home from Big Spring on Saturday with Mid Penn championship titles.

Here are some of the highlights of Week 7:

Cross country

State College (girls): State College competed in a quad-meet at Circleville Park on Monday, facing Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy, Penns Valley and Grier School. Marlee Kwasnica placed second overall with a time of 18:57, Grace Morningstar placed third overall with a time of 19:57, Amy Devan placed fourth overall with a time of 20:27, Alex Antoniono placed sixth overall with a time of 20:59, Abigail Bigger placed seventh overall with a time of 21:06, Maya Ikenberry placed ninth overall with a time of 21:11, and Ava Langelaan placed 10th overall with a time of 21:36. Devyani Wadhia rounded out the team’s top seven by placing 14th overall with a time of 22:21. In team scoring, State College topped Saint Joseph’s 15-48.

Penns Valley (girls): Penns Valley’s Anna Stitzer placed first overall on Monday in a quad-meet with State College, Saint Joseph’s and the Grier School at Circleville Park, clocking an 18:50 to edge State College’s Marlee Kwasnica. Alexis Durn was 11th in 21:39, Ann-Marie McMurtrie was 20th in 24:30 and Anneliese Racette 30th in 33:52.

Saint Joseph’s (girls): Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy fell 15-48 to State College in a quad-meet with the Little Lions and runners from Penns Valley and the Grier School on Monday at Circleville Park. Amber Fisher led the WolfPack, finishing eighth in 21:11. Evelyn Reynolds was 13th in 22:17; Kita Chappell was 15th in 23:08; Abby Ridenour was 17th in 23:31; and Brandi Carmack was 18th in 23:48.

State College (boys): State College beat Penns Valley and Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy (15-50, 15-50) in a tri-meet at Circleville Park on Monday. Little Lions swept the top 12 finishes. Charles Endres was first in 17:15, followed by Nick Sloff in 17:15, Trent Dinant in 17:15, Tony Tzolov in 17:15, Griffin Selber in 17:29; Ethan Morningstar in 17:51; and Owen Vaira in 18:01 to round out the top seven.

Penns Valley (boys): Penns Valley lost 15-50 to State College but beat Saint Joseph’s 27-28 in a tri-meet Monday at Circleville Park. McClain Reamer led the Rams, finishing 13th in 18:27. Simon Smith was 26th in 20:17, Vince Smith was 27th in 20:18, Dilon Reilly was 33rd in 20:57 and Matthew Wheland was 44th in 23:27.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 15-50 to State College and 27-28 to Penns Valley in a tri-meet Monday at Circleville Park. Asa Reynolds led the WolfPack, finishing 14th in 18:3.3. Josh Hyman was 19th in 19:25, Colin Simander was 20th in 19:26, Anthony Woomer was 49th in 24:47 and Cade Behrer was 52nd in 25:32.

BEA: Bald Eagle Area hosted Juniata on Thursday. Colton Wagner ran a 19:58 to finish in second place. Juniata’s Logan Strauser placed first in 19:52.

Mid Penn Championships: Both State College’s boys and girls cross country teams won Mid Penn team titles on Saturday at Big Spring. It was the seventh consecutive Mid Penn title for the Lady Lions, whose score of 55 was the lowest points total they’ve had over that period. Mechanicsburg was second with 68, followed by Hershey with 71. Marlee Kwasnica led the Lady Lions, finishing fifth in 19:01. Chloe Poindexter, Amy Devan and junior Natalie Koncoski placed 14th, 15th, & 16th, respectively, running times of 20:17, 20:18 and 20:21. Alex Antoniono wasn’t far behind, finishing 23rd in 20:38. Abigail Bigger and Grace Morningstar also placed in the field’s top 35 by finishing 29th and 31st, respectively, and running times of 20:57 and 21:06. Ava Langelaan rounded out the team’s top 8 by placing 45th overall in 21:46. The boys team also scored 55, followed by Carlisle (85) and Cumberland Valley (92). Trent Dinant led the Little Lions, finishing fourth in 16:25. Charles Endres also made it into the top 10, finishing sixth in 16:28. Nick Sloff (11th in 16:37), Tony Tzolov (23rd in 17:06) and Griffin Selber (29th in 17:15) all finished in the top 30. Owen Vaira was 70th in 18:17, Samuel Endres 74th in 18:26 and Ethan Morningstar was 78th in 18:37.

Field Hockey

State College: The Little Lions defeated Cedar Cliff 2-1 on Tuesday to improve to 10-3 and 8-2 in the Mid Penn Conference Commonwealth division. Leah Moyer scored in the second quarter with 5:34 left on the clock with an assist by the driving Hannah Garlin. Sydney O’Donnell later found Joelle Bartlett in front of the goal for a State College lead of 2-0 with 0:41 remaining in the second quarter. Cedar Cliff’s lone goal was with six seconds left on the clock when Ava Buckwater assisted Riley Petroff. State College goalkeeper Molly Schreiner finished with two saves and Cedar Cliff’s goalie had 33 saves.

State College: State College tied 1-1 in overtime with Newport on Wednesday to move to 10-3-1 and 8-2 in the Mid Penn Conference Commonwealth division. Newport’s Makenna Buffington scored first, assisted by Claire Weidenhammer, at 3:18 in the third quarter. Phebe Herlocher evened the score at 8:38 into the third on a penalty stroke. State College out-shot Newport 26 to 16. Molly Schreiner had 14 saves for the Little Lions.

State College: State College spoiled Central Dauphin’s Senior Night on Friday with a 2-1 victory to improve to 11-3-1 and 9-2 in conference play. The Little Lions came out of the gate firing, tallying two corners and three shots in the first five minutes. State College’s first goal came at three minutes into the second quarter, when Maddie Shomo scored off a pass from Phebe Herlocher. Shomo found the net again in the second quarter, at 5:14, this time from a center pass from Herlocher to Sydney O’Donnell. The Rams’ lone goal came with 1:36 left in the game. State College goalkeeper Molly Schreiner had 13 saves, and Madi Gaul had a defensive save.

Soccer

P-O (boys): Phillipsburg-Osceola downed Huntingdon 4-1 on Monday. The Mounties’ Hank Hazelton scored each of his team’s goals, propelling P-O to a 7-3-0 overall record.

Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte lost 7-1 to Hollidaysburg on Monday.

State College (boys): State College lost 1-0 to Cumberland Valley on Monday.

Penns Valley vs. BEA (boys): Penns Valley defeated Bald Eagle Area 5-0 on Monday, led by two unassisted goals from Aiden Culver. Nate Long also scored an unassisted goal, while Danny Gray struck on a penalty kick and Jack O’Donald closed the scoring with a goal assisted by Hayden Houser. Rams goalie Gavin Robb finished with six saves.

P-O (girls): Philipsburg-Osceola beat Huntingdon 2-1 on Tuesday for its third consecutive win. Scoring for the Mounties were Lily Warlow (unassisted at 27:33 in the first half) and Kendra Smith (unassisted at 38:44 of the second half). Kinley Bender had four saves.

BEA (boys): Bald Eagle Area suffered a 4-0 loss to undefeated Hollidaysburg on Tuesday. Clayton Reigh had 16 saves in the net for the Eagles, who are now 5-9-1.

Bellefonte (girls): The Lady Raiders suffered a 1-0 defeat to Hollidaysburg on Tuesday. Goalkeeper Keira Whitman had eight saves.

Penns Valley vs. BEA (girls): The Lady Rams took on Bald Eagle Area on Tuesday, and the teams battled to a 0-0 tie. The Lady Eagles held a 16-12 shot advantage, and Penns Valley had an 8-4 corner kicks lead.

Saint Joseph’s: The Wolves held an advantage at halftime, but ultimately suffered a 3-2 defeat to Shikellamy on Tuesday.

Bellefonte (boys): The Raiders picked up goals from Andy Geresanko and Hayden Walker in a 2-0 win over Clearfield on Wednesday. Noah Gadsby and Will Spratt each had an assist.

State College (boys): State College beat Red Land 7-1 on Wednesday.

State College (girls): State College lost 3-0 to Red Land on Wednesday.

Penns Valley vs. P-O (girls): The Lady Rams rallied for a 2-1 win over Philipsburg-Osceola on Wednesday to improve 6-6-1 (5-5-1 in the Mountain League). Khendyl Shanrey gave the Lady Mounties an early lead, however Penns Valley’s Cate Goodwin and Bekah Gillespie scored on a penalty kick to cap off the comeback. Schenley Farrell had an assist on Shanrey’s goal. Ellie Brinker had an assist on Goodwin’s goal.

Penns Valley vs. P-O (boys): Philipsburg-Osceola beat Penns Valley 2-1 on Wednesday. Alex Goldin struck first for the Mounties, while Zach McGonigal notched the game-winner. Carson Long had both assists.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy lost 4-0 to Juniata on Thursday.

BEA (girls): Bald Eagle Area beat Clearfield 4-3 on Thursday. Falen McHenry had a hat trick and an assist in the game, and Heather Leskovansky scored the game-winner. Angie Grieb had 10 saves for the Eagles, as they improve to 7-7-1 overall and 7-4-1 in the Mountain League.

Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte lost 5-1 to Clearfield on Thursday.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy beat Belleville Mennonite 5-1 on Friday.

State College (girls): State College got its first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Mifflin County on Friday. Claire Vollmer’s shot was deflected by Mifflin County’s goalkeeper, and Natalie Ausherman knocked it in for the game’s lone score.

P-O: Phlipsburg-Osceola’s comeback attempt fell shot on Saturday, at the Mounties fell 5-3 to West Branch. After P-O found itself down 3-0 at the half, Lily Warlow scored twice in the second half and Schenley Farrell added another goal. But the Warriors were able to score twice more for the win. Kinley Bender had three saves and Paige Rishel had six for the Mounties.

Tennis

State College (girls): No. 1 seed State College defeated Shikellamy 5-0 on Monday to move on in the District 4-6 Team Championships bracket and carry a 15-3 record into the final. Singles results were: Quiana Guo(SC) def. Melanie Minnier 6-0, 6-0; Kelly Steel(SC) def. Kiersten Strohecker 6-1, 6-2; Madeline Miller(SC) def. Olivia Weaver 6-1, 6-1. Doubles: Emily Zhang/Allison Norloff(SC) def. Allie Minnier/Lily Weist 6-1, 6-0; Marissa Xu/Juju Dye(SC) def. Megan Strohecker 6-0, 6-1.

State College (girls): On Wednesday, the Lady Little Lions swept Hollidaysburg, 3-0, to claim the District 6 Class 3A team title. Madeline Miller (6-1, 6-2 over Regan McKee) and Kelly Steel (6-1, 6-3 over Ella Jodon), each collected a singles win. Emily Zhang and Allison Norloff (6-2, 6-2 over Rachel Gallagher-Megan Ferris) claimed a No. 1 doubles win to finish the match off.

Volleyball

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy fell to Juniata Valley 3-0 in straight sets Monday.

P-O vs. Bellefonte: The Lady Mounties swept Bellefonte 25-11, 25-10, and 25-18 on Tuesday. Leaders for P-O (11-0) were Kalista Butler with 36 assists; Reese Hazelton with 19 kills, 12 service points, and three aces; Janey Johnson had 15 digs; and London Cutler added nine service points and three aces

Penns Valley: The Lady Rams fell in three straight sets to Huntingdon on Tuesday. Penns Valley’s Cammie Upcraft was able to earn her 500th career kill in the loss, becoming only the second Lady Ram to reach that milestone. She had eight blocks and 10 kills on the night to lead the way.

BEA: The Lady Eagles swept visiting Hollidaysburg 25-19, 25-12, 25-15 on Tuesday. Maddie Perry’s 12 kills and five aces led the way offensively for BEA. Ava Stere added 10 kills and 13 digs. Olivia Boone’s 23 digs led the Lady Eagles, while Perry added 10. Megan Reese dished out 33 assists.

State College: The Lady Little Lions swept Cedar Cliff, 3-0 (25-18, 25-15, and 25-13), on Tuesday, and improved their record to 7-2. Claire Jordan was all over the court for State College with 11 kills and 13 digs to pace the team. Kate Lally’s handed out 17 assists to lead the Lady Little Lions.

Saint Joseph’s: The Lady Wolves were swept by Glendale 3-0 on Wednesday.

P-O vs. Penns Valley: Philipsburg-Osceola swept Penns Valley (20-25, 22-25, 18-25) on Thursday to improve to 11-0 in the Mountain League and 12-0 overall. Penns Valley senior outside hitter Kailen Winkelblech earned her 500th career dig by tallying nine digs in the game to move into fourth all-time for the program. Stat leaders for the Mounties were: Kalista Butler with 35 assists; Reese Hazelton with 27 kills; Janey Johnson with 17 digs and 8 service points; London Cutler with 12 digs and 8 service points; and Starcia Bainey with 6 blocks. Stat leaders for the Rams were: Cammie Upcraft with 12 kills and 4 blocks; Kailen Winkelblech with 5 kills and 9 digs; Julia Emel with 19 assists and 12 digs; Maddie Butler with a team-high 17 digs; and Ellie Coursen with 3 kills and 3 blocks.

Saint Joseph’s: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy beat the Grier School in straight sets on Thursday.

BEA vs. Bellefonte: Bald Eagle Area beat Bellefonte in straight sets on Thursday (25-14, 25-22, and 25-16). Stat leaders for the Eagles were: Megan Reese with 23 assists; Ava Stere with 6 kills, Miya Brooks and Maddie Perry each with 5 and Miya Brooks and Maddie Perry each with 4; Stere and Olivia Boone each had 3 aces while Perry added 2; Guenot led the way with 13 digs, while Perry had 11 and Boone added 10.

State College: State College beat Central Dauphin 3-1 on Thursday, with scores of 25-21, 21-25, 25-22, and 25-16, to improve to 8-2 on the season. Stat leaders for the Little Lions were: Claire Jordan with 10 kills; Kate Lally with 9 kills and 12 assists; Sam Shala with 16 assists; Michal Ann Kessinger with 4 aces; Iris Archibald with 17 digs, Molly Thompson with 14 and Jordan with 11; and Anna Witmer and Emi Shukla each with 2 blocks.
