Here are 5 takeaways from Week 9 of Centre County high school football
Week 9 of high school football in Centre County resulted in just one victory for the area schools.
Bald Eagle Area dropped to 7-2 on the year, following a 48-5 loss at the hands of 9-0 Jersey Shore. Bellefonte lost 47-14 against 9-0 Clearfield. Penns Valley had the lone Centre County victory of the week with a 40-14 win over Philipsburg-Osceola, and State College dropped a close battle at Harrisburg, 15-13.
Here are the takeaways from Week 9 of Centre County football.
Bald Eagle Area’s season far from over
Despite keeping it close in the first half, the young Bald Eagle Area team was worn down undefeated Jersey Shore, falling 48-5. While the first half ended 13-2, the Eagles were unable to keep up with the Class 4A powerhouse, giving up 35 points in the third quarter. Despite the lopsided loss, the Eagles’ season is far from over, with the opportunity for a run at the Class 2A district and state titles on the horizon.
Bellefonte got the ball moving against Clearfield
While Bellefonte was trounced 47-14, the Raiders were able to get to get as close as 14-7 in the first quarter. Their 14 points — touchdowns from Triston Heckman and Grayson Alterio, plus Hayden Walker’s PATs— were the most that any team scored against Clearfield this season. Prior to Friday, the most points that the Bison gave up this season came against Tyrone on Sept. 17, where they gave up 12 points in a 42-12 victory. Kudos to Raiders.
Penns Valley’s Jackson Romig is the definitive starter at quarterback
The Rams had a strong 40-14 victory over Philipsburg-Osceola, much in part due to the play of sophomore quarterback Jackson Romig. Romig hit Miles Brooks on a slant route for a 57-yard touchdown pass, a second touchdown to Brooks from six years out and another touchdown pass to John Meyer for 26 yards. Due to his play, Penns Valley can air the ball out and keep teams honest by dropping more players into coverage.
Philipsburg-Osceola just couldn’t stop Penns Valley’s offensive attack
With three passing touchdowns from Romig, two rushing touchdowns from Ty Watson. and another from Tanner Illgen, Penns Valley had no problem moving the ball against the Mounties. It was just another night where Philipsburg-Osceola couldn’t get the job done one the defensive end. The now 2-7 Mounties will have one more regular season game next week against Ridgway/Johnsonburg, a 6-3 co-op team. It’ll be another tough matchup.
State College’s valiant effort comes up short
The Little Lions had a great field position late in the fourth quarter following Harrisburg’s Shawn Lee only netting 11 yards on his punt. After driving and getting on the goal line, State College quarterback Jack Morris punched it in for his team to trail 15-13. Trying for a two-point conversion to tie the game with just six seconds left on the clock, the Little Lions were stuffed and unable to send the game into overtime. Despite falling to 4-5 on the year, State College should be commended for its resilience throughout the season despite injuries.
