HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Nov. 1-6 in Centre County high school sports

With the postseason in full swing, several Centre County athletes got the chance this week to hoist trophies and have medals placed around their necks.
Highlighting the week was the gold-medal-winning performance by Penns Valley’s Anna Stitzer at the PIAA Class 1A cross country championships. Philipsburg-Osceola’s Chad Muckey finished 10th in Class 1A, while Penns Valley’s Alexis Durn and State College’s Amy Devan and Marlee Kwasnica also turned in top-25 performances in their respective classes.
Here’s what happened:
Cross country
PIAA Class 1A girls championship: Penns Valley senior Anna Stitzer brought home a gold medal from Hershey on Saturday, finishing in 19:32.0 to place first in the Class 1A girls race. Her teammate Alexis Durn placed 25th in 20:50.5 to also earn All-State status. Abigail Stitzer placed 44th in 21:31.4. Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy finished eighth as a team with 234. Amber Fisher led the Wolf Pack, finishing 31st in 21:11.3. Other finishers for Saint Joseph’s were: Kita Chappell, 71st in 22:02.8; Evelyn Reynolds, 105th in 22:38.3; Brandi Carmack, 124th in 23:07.1; Abby Ridenour, 171st in 24:09.1; and Brynn Wright, 220th in 25:49.3.
PIAA Class 1A boys championship: Philipsburg-Osceola junior Chad Muckey placed 10th in 17:08.2 on Saturday at the PIAA Class 1A boys championship in Hershey. Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy’s Colin Simander was 50th in 18:14.5; Penns Valley’s Simon Smith, 56th; Penns Valley’s McClain Reamer was 57th in 18:42.4; Penns Valley’s Dilon Reilly was 122nd in 20:23.4; Penns Valley’s Vince Smith was 128th in 20:39.6; Penns Valley’s Matthew Wheeland was 141st in 21:47.6; Penns Valley’s Matthew Ruoff, 142nd in 22:26.8; Philipsburg-Osceola’s Scott Frantz, 155th in 19:11.3; Saint Joseph’s Josh Hyman, 174th in 19:24.8. Penns Valley finished 22nd as a team with 504.
PIAA Class 2A boys championship: Bellefonte’s Alexander Crist, finished 58th in 17:39.6, his teammates Chase Ebeling finished 61st in 17:41.9 and Alex Mansfield 122nd in 18:18.6.
PIAA Class 3A girls championship: State College placed third as a team in the PIAA Class 3A championships in Hershey on Saturday with 154. Amy Devan and Marlee Kwasnica both earned All-State status, finishing 14th in 19:40.6 and 16th in 19:43.6, respectively. Chloe Poindexter was 33rd in 20:24.2; Grace Morningstar was 42nd in 20:43.9; Alex Antoniono was 49th in 20:52.6; Natalie Koncoski was 50th in 20:53.2; and Abigail Bigger was 70th in 21:19.4.
PIAA Class 3A boys championship: State College placed seventh as a team with 231 points in the PIAA Class 3A championships in Hershey on Saturday. Trent Dinant was 26th in 16:57.5; Charles Endres was 32nd in 17:07.8; Nick Sloff was 34th in 17:08.1; Tony Tzolov was 44th in 17:21.1; Sam Viglione was 95th in 18:10.2; Samuel Endres was 119th in 18:25.3; and Griffin Selber was 145th in 19:28.1.

State College: State College began its season with a 6-3 loss to Hollidaysburg on Monday. Scoring for the Little Lions were: Zander Faust, Rees Engel (assisted by Luke Janac) and Jack Messina on a penalty shot. John Olsen tallied 38 saves on 44 shots.

District 6 Class 3A boys playoffs: No. 2 Bellefonte soccer lost 1-0 in overtime to No. 3 Central Mountain in the opening round of the PIAA District 6 Class 3A playoffs on Monday at Rogers Stadium. Evan Cross scored for the Wildcats with 12:15 remaining in OT to give Central Mountain the win and the trip to the district championship game against top-seeded Hollidaysburg. Central Mountain out-shot Bellefonte 17-15.
District 6 Class 3A girls playoffs: No. 3 Bellefonte lost 2-0 to No. 2 Tyrone in the opening round of the PIAA District 6 Class 3A playoffs on Monday at Hollidaysburg, ending its season.
District 6 Class 4A girls playoffs: No. 3 State College fell 3-1 to No. 2 Mifflin County in the opening round of the PIAA District 6 Class 4A championships on Monday at Bellefonte’s Rogers Stadium. The Little Lions and Huskies were knotted up a one apiece at the half, thanks to goals from Mifflin County’s Aubrey Strohecker and State College’s Mia Reese. But Strohecker netted two more in the second half to give Mifflin County the win and a trip to the district championship game against top-seeded Altoona. Mifflin County out-shot State College 10-2.
District 6 Class 2A girls semifinals: No. 6 Bald Eagle Area defeated No. 7 Juniata, 1-0, on Tuesday at Alumni Stadium in the PIAA District 6 Class 2A semifinals. Senior Falen McHenry scored the lone goal in the shutout. With the win, the Eagles advanced to the district championship game against Bedford.
District 6 Class 4A boys championship: No. 1 State College dominated No. 2 Altoona en route to a 7-1 win on Thursday at Bald Eagle Area for the PIAA District 6 Class 4A championship. Goals were scored by: Carson Litzinger (2), Sam Cheslock, Jonathan Mwangi, Alden Roth, Davis Pagett and Diego Terrones. Cheslock had two assists on the night. Owen Hollobaugh also had an assist.
District 6 Class 1A boys championship: No. 2 Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy beat No. 1 West Shamokin, 3-0, on Thursday at Altoona’s Mansion Park to win the program’s first PIAA District 6 Class 1A boys soccer title. Goals were scored by Samuel Yangula, Luke Surovec and Spencer Gigante. The WolfPack will play Mercer in the first round of the PIAA Class 1A championships on at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Slippery Rock High School.
District 6 Class 2A girls championship: No. 6 Bald Eagle Area fell 1-0 to top-seeded Bedford in the PIAA District 6 Class 2A championship on Thursday at Altoona’s Mansion Park, ending its season.
District 6-10 subregional: State College beat McDowell 4-2 on Saturday at Hollidaysburg to secure a spot in the PIAA Class 4A championships. Goals were scored by Drais Parrillo, Owen Hollobaugh and Davis Pagett. Pagett and Nathan Rockower had assists. State College will play Peters Township at home in the opening round of the PIAA Class 4A championships at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

PIAA 3A singles championships: State College’s Quiana Guo lost (6-0, 6-1) to Manheim Township’s Avery Palandjian in the opening round of the PIAA Class 3A singles championships on Friday in Hershey. “Quiana had a fantastic 2021 season and finished with a 23-3 record at No. 1 singles,” coach Jane Borden said. “We are incredibly proud of her for the way she represents SC tennis. Her poise on court, her dedication to the team and her work ethic are exceptional. She is the epitome of the word ‘student-athlete.’”

District 6 Class 4A playoffs: No. 1 State College swept No. 4 Altoona, 3-0, on Monday in the opening round of the PIAA District 6 Class 4A playoffs on Monday at home, with scores of 25-19, 25-17, and 25-17. Stat leaders for the Little Lions were: Molly Thompson with 15 digs, Claire Jordan with 8 and Iris Archibald with 7; Anna Witmer with 2 blocks and Jordan with 1; Jordan with 9 kills and Sophie Wales with 6; Kate Lally with 12 assists and 4 aces and Sam Shala with 11 assists and two aces. With the win, the Little Lions advanced to the championship to take on Central Mountain.
District 6 Class 3A playoffs: No. 3 Bellefonte fell in three sets to No. 2 Hollidaysburg on Tuesday in the opening round of the PIAA District 6 Class 3A playoffs, ending its season.
District 6 Class 2A playoffs: No. 1 Philipsburg-Osceola swept No. 9 Huntingdon on Tuesday, with scores of 25-12, 25-19, and 25-14, in the PIAA District 6 quarterfinals. Stat leaders were: Kalista Butler with 37 assists, 8 digs, and 2 aces; Reese Hazelton with 25 kills and 12 digs; Jayden Perks with 5 kills and 3 blocks; Janey Johnson with 9 digs and 11 service points; and Josie Tekely with 10 service points. The 16-0 Mounties advanced to play No. 4 Bald Eagle Area in the semifinals.
District 6 Class 2A playoffs: No. 4 Bald Eagle Area beat No. 5 Tyrone in straight sets on Tuesday, with scores of 5-21, 25-13, and 25-18, in the PIAA District 6 quarterfinals. Maddie Perry hit .500 on the night for the Eagles with 14 kills. Claire Andrews hit .455 with 6 kills. Megan Reese handed out 30 assists. Defensively, Perry had 14 digs while Olivia Boone added 10. Claire Andrews and Miya Brooks each had four blocks. The Eagles went on to take on top-seeded P-O in the semifinals.
District 6 Class 2A playoffs: No. 11 Penns Valley ended its season with a 3-1 loss to No. 3 Forest Hills on Tuesday in the PIAA District 6 quarterfinals. Stat leaders for the Rams were: Cammie Upcraft, who had 14 kills and two blocks to push her over the 100 career blocks milestone; Kailen Winkleblech with 13 kills and 10 digs; Ella Hadley with 13 kills and 5 digs; Julia Emel with 40 assists, 7 digs, 2 kills and an ace; Maddie Butler with a team-high 13 digs and 2 aces; Brianna Bressler with 11 digs; and Laney Aston with a kill, 8 digs, and 2 aces.
District 6 Class 4A championship: No. 1 State College volleyball beat No. 2 Central Mountain in straight sets on Wednesday, with scores of 25-17, 26-24, and 25-8, on Thursday at Tyrone to win the District 6 Class 4A championship. Stat leaders for the Little Lions were: Kate Lally with 23 assists; Sam Shala with 11 assists and 9 kills; Claire Jordan with 13 kills; Sophie Wales with 10 kills; Molly Thompson with 11 digs; Jordan and Iris Archibald each with 7 digs; and Wales with 2 blocks. State College will play at North Allegheny in the opening round of the PIAA championships at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
District 6 Class 2A semifinals: No. 1 Philipsburg-Osceola beat Bald Eagle Area in four sets at home on Thursday, with scores of 25-18, 25-12, 26-24 and 25-8, in the PIAA Class 2A semifinals. Three different Mounties broke program records, as sophomore Reese Hazelton had 29 kills on the night to become the all-time career kills leader, Kalista Butler had 41 assists to become the all-time career assists leader, and Janey Johnson became the all-time career in digs after tallying 11 on the evening. Stat leaders for the Mounties were: Butler with 41 assists and 14 digs; Hazelton with 29 kills, 16 digs and two blocks; London Cutler contributed five kills, 16 service points and two blocks; Jayden Perks had two blocks; Johnson had 11 digs, 11 service points and three aces; Josie Tekely had 11 service points and Annie Johnson added three aces. Stat leaders for the Eagles were: Ava Stere with 8 kills and Claire Andrews and Maddie Perry each with 6; Megan Reese had a team-high 22 assists; Perry and Maddie Guenot each had 10 digs, Reese had 11 and Olivia Boone had a team-high 13; Jocelyn Hyde, Reese, and Stere each had a pair of aces. The Eagles finish their season with an overall record of 12-6, while the 17-0 Mounties advanced to the district championship game against No. 2 Central Cambria.
District 6 Class 2A championship: No. 1 Philipsburg-Osceola beat No. 2 Central Cambria in straight sets (25-10, 25-15 and 25-14) on Saturday in Altoona to win its second consecutive PIAA District 6 Class 2A championship. The Mounties will play in the first round of the PIAA Class 2A championships against Avonworth at 6 p.m. Tuesday at home.
