Who should be the Centre Daily Times Athlete of the Week for Nov. 1-6? Vote here

Here are this week’s nominees for the Centre Daily Times high school athlete of the week presented in alphabetical order. They were selected by the Centre Daily Times sports staff via stats compiled by the CDT or sent to cdtscores@centredaily.com.

Garrett Burns, Bald Eagle Area

Burns became Bald Eagle area’s first 1,000-yard rusher in 17 years with 32 carries for 179 yards and four touchdowns in a 33-29 victory over River Valley. He now has 1,130 yards rushing on the year and 12 rushing touchdowns.

Janey Johnson, Kalista Butler and Reese Hazelton, Philipsburg-Osceola

The trio of Johnson, Butler and Hazelton each reached career milestones Thursday night in the District 6 Class 2A volleyball semifinal against Bald Eagle Area on Thursday. Hazelton had 29 kills in the game to surpass 1,000 kills, Butler had 41 assists to become P-O’s all-time career leader in assists, and Johnson’s 11 digs made her P-O’s all-time career leader in digs.

The Mounties went on to win their second straight district championship on Saturday, sweeping Central Cambria. The Mounties started their week with a sweep of Huntingdon, in which Butler had 37 assists, 8 digs, and 2 aces, Hazelton had 25 kills and 12 digs, and Johnson had nine digs and 11 service points.

Carson Litzinger, State College

Litzinger had a two-goal game in the District 6 Class 4A soccer championship with a 7-1 victory over Altoona. His first goal came within the first few minutes of the match and he had a second goal with 9:46 left in the second half to give State College a 4-0 lead.

Jackson Romig, Penns Valley

While Penns Valley’s season ended on Friday in a 49-28 loss to Bellwood-Antis, quarterback Jackson Romig had one of his best nights of the year. Romig threw four touchdown passes and went 15-for-23 on passes for 252 passing yards in the Rams District 6 2A playoff game.

Saint Joseph’s soccer

No. 2 Saint Joseph’s defeated No. 1 West Shamokin, 3-0, on Thursday at Altoona to win the program’s first PIAA District 6 Class 1A boys soccer title. Samuel Yangula, Luke Surovec and Spencer Gigante were the three goal-scorers for Saint Joseph’s. The WolfPack will take on Mercer in the first round of the PIAA Class 1A championships at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Slippery Rock High School.

Anna Stitzer, Penns Valley

Stitzer brought home a state championship on Saturday. The sophomore ran for a time of 19:32.0 to win the PIAA Class 1A cross country championships in Hershey. Portage’s Lauren Shaffer finished second in 19:37.9. PIAA gold was yet another accolade to add to Stitzer’s already impressive season, which includes a Mountain League title, District 6 title and a pile of broken course records.
