Here are 3 takeaways from Week 1 of postseason action for Centre County football teams
A few teams met their season’s end this weekend and one continued to push on.
Bald Eagle Area defeated River Valley in the District 6 Class 2A quarterfinals by a score of 33-29. Bellefonte was defeated 41-12 by Juniata, despite a late rally, in the 4A championship. Penns Valley lost to Bellwood-Antis, 49-28, in the 2A quarterfinals.
Here are three takeaways from this weekend’s high school football playoff matchups.
Bald Eagle Area running back Garrett Burns is exceptional
Burns finished the night with 32 carries for 179 yards and four rushing touchdowns. He now has 1,130 yards rushing on the year and 12 rushing touchdowns. He’s now the first player in 17 years for the Eagles to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season and still has a chance to boost his rushing total to cap off a strong career.
Bellefonte isn’t there yet
One good half doesn’t matter. It takes a full game’s effort to defeat teams as good as Juniata. While the Raiders scored 12 points in the second half, it was too little too late. That’s something that an offseason and a number of new classes of freshmen could possibly fix for Bellefonte, as the Raiders ended their season 2-8.
Penns Valley had a strong finish to the season
The Rams have a bright future ahead of them. They found their young quarterback in Jackson Romig, who went 15-for-23 on passes for 252 passing yards and four touchdown passes in their 49-28 loss to Bellwood-Antis. They had three straight wins to get into the playoffs and they could’ve easily collapsed.
They didn’t and they have a chance to build a future that puts them at the front of the Mountain League.
