Here’s how Centre County soccer, volleyball teams did in the first round of PIAAs

Centre County had four teams qualify for the PIAA soccer and volleyball championships, which began Tuesday, but only one will advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Philipsburg-Osceola girls volleyball turned in another emphatic performance, sweeping District 7 runnerup Avonworth, with scores of 25-20, 25-13, 25-13. Avonworth is ranked No. 5 in the state in Class 2A by the Pennsylvania Volleyball Coaches Association, and P-O is No. 1. The Mounties also swept the No. 6 team, Central Cambria, in the District 6 finals last weekend.

Stat leaders Tuesday night for the Mounties were: Kalista Butler with 36 assists, 13 service points and 2 aces; Reese Hazelton with 27 kills and 2 blocks; London Cutler had 6 kills and 11 digs; Janey Johnson with 12 digs, 10 service points, and 4 aces; Josie Tekely with 10 service points; and Abby Lumadue with 2 blocks.

The Mounties will play District 10 champ Harbor Creek, which defeated Seton LaSalle, 3-1, in the 2A quarterfinals on Saturday.

North Allegheny girls volleyball 3, State College 0

State College girls volleyball had a tough task in taking on North Allegheny, PVCA’s No. 3 team in 4A. The Little Lions fought hard, making a late run in the third set, but were ultimately overpowered as North Allegheny won in straight sets (25-8, 25-13, 25-23).

Peters Township boys soccer 3, State College 1

Peters Township got on the board early to put pressure on State College with a 1-0 lead heading into halftime at Memorial Field. While Davis Pagett knotted things up for the Little Lions with 21 minutes remaining in the second half, they eventually fell 3-1 against the Indians in the opening round of the PIAA Class 4A championships.

Mercer boys soccer 4, Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy 0

After making history last week, winning its program’s first District 6 title, Saint Joseph’s fall 4-0 to District 10 champ Mercer on Tuesday in the opening round of the Class 1A PIAA championships at Slippery Rock High School. The WolfPack finished their season with a 9-10 record.
