State College boys golf’s championship run is Centre Daily Times’ High School Sports Moment of 2021
State College boys golf’s 3A state championship made history this fall, with the team bringing home its first-ever PIAA title, and the achievement has now been voted the Centre Daily Times’ best moment in Centre County high school sports in 2021.
The Little Lions golf program brought in a commanding 57% of the vote (2,471 votes) to win first place. Philipsburg-Osceola girls volleyball’s record-setting year came in second with 27% of the vote (1,188 votes), and State College girls swimming’s record-setting year came in third with 12% of the vote (513 votes).
State College boys golf brought home the school’s second PIAA title of 2021 in October after the boys’ track and field team did it in the spring.
The Little Lions squad became State College’s first golf team team to qualify for the PIAA championships since moving up to Class 3A and the first team in program history to win the title.
State College shot +8 (292 total) in the pool featuring Fox Chapel (+8, 292), LaSalle College (+15, 299), Central Bucks West (+16, 300), Dallastown (+19, 303), and Dallas (+45, 329) at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York. They went on to defeat Fox Chapel in a team playoff to win the 3A state championship.
Senior John Olsen finished shooting one under par with a 70, Maxwell Wager shot a 72 (+1), Luke Janac 74 (+3), and Joey Sabol 76 (+5). Thomas Hay finished outside of the team’s scoring by shooting 84 (+13). The Little Lions became District 6 and Mid Penn champions earlier on in the season and sent Olsen to individual states, tying for 28th.
