HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Jan. 3-8 in Centre County high school sports

Penns Valley boys basketball’s Zach Braucht had a big performance against Bald Eagle Area on Monday with 29 points in the win. Philipsburg-Osceola boys won 71-33 in a matchup with Saint Joe’s on Friday night with four scorers in double figures. State College swimming had a successful week with a victory over Mifflin County with both girls and boys teams.

Here are some more highlights from Jan. 3-8.

Basketball

Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte defeated Hollidaysburg 82-71 on Monday. The Raiders improved to 7-1 with a win over West Branch 64-44 on Wednesday.

Bellefonte (girls): The Lady Raiders dropped their matchup with Hollidaysburg on Tuesday by a score of 73-16. On Wednesday, they lost 61-29 to Williamsport. Bellefonte fell 49-35 on Friday at home against Clearfield, dropping to 1-9 on the season.

Penns Valley (boys): Penns Valley defeated Bald Eagle 59-39 on Monday, powered by Zach Braucht’s 29 points. Jackson Romig had nine points, Kyle Niewinski had eight, Colin Niewinski added six, Aidan Culver finished with four, Dakota Brodzina had two and Gavin Robb capped off the team’s scoring with one point. The Rams dropped their next matchup on Wednesday 51-36 against Mount Union, falling to 2-6 on the season.

Penns Valley (girls): Penns Valley dropped a home matchup on Wednesday with Bald Eagle 42-39. Ann-Marie McMurtrie was the high scorer with 12 points, Kailen Winkelblech trailed her with eight points and Skylar Fleshman third high scorer with six points for Penns Valley. They were set to take on Philipsburg-Osceola on Friday, but the game was postponed.

Philipsburg-Osceola (boys): Philipsburg-Osceola opened up on Monday with a 57-54 victory over Huntingdon. They ended the week with a 71-33 win over Saint Joe’s on the road on Friday. Oliver Harpster finished with 19 points to lead all scorers, followed up by Jacob Desimone’s 16 points, Tyler Doyle had 14 and Jeremy Whitehead capped off the double-digit scorers with 13.

Philipsburg-Osceola (girls): Philipsburg-Osceola lost 74-16 against Huntingdon on Tuesday. Sophomore Khendyl Sharrer had 11 points on the night to lead the Lady Mounties. Philipsburg-Osceola is now 2-5 on the season.

Saint Joe’s (boys): Saint Joe’s defeated Greenwood 48-37 on Monday. They followed up with a 59-50 victory against Williamsburg Community on Wednesday. The Wolfpack dropped to 5-6 on the season following a 71-33 loss on Friday at home against Philipsburg-Osceola. Jayden Capparelle had a team-high 11 points and Chris Warner was the second leading score for the team with six points.

State College (boys): State College narrowly lost to Central Dauphin 75-69 at home on Tuesday and followed up with a 58-54 loss on Thursday on the road against Williamsport.

State College (girls): State College dropped an away matchup with Central Dauphin on Tuesday 53-40.

Ice Hockey

State College (boys): State College defeated Westmont Hilltop by a score of 3-1 on Wednesday. The Little Lions outpaced the Hilltoppers with power play goal by Zander Faust on a Luke Janac assist with 4:06 on the clock in the first period. Alex McGuire scored on an assist by Janac with 3:41 on the clock in the second period, but was answered immediately with a goal by Westmont Hilltop’s Aiden Rice, who was assisted by Kobe Rickabaugh and Anthony Marano. The Little Lions led 2-1 after the second period. Faust put the Hilltoppers away with an even strength goal (16:54).

Bishop McCourt took down State College by a score of 5-2 on Friday. McGuire opened up with an even strength goal on an assist by Janac with 11:45 in the first period. McGuire scored another even strength goal on an assist by David Lee with 16:15 left in the first period, which would be the last of their goals. Vitaliy Ulianov and Brennan Karalfa assisted Ilia Zhdanov on a goal in the first 35 seconds of the second period. Matthew Ribblett and Brennan Karalfa assisted Lukas Cascino with 1:52 on the clock tie Bishop McCourt at 2-2 in the second period. Karalfa went on to score two straight goals (10:45, 11:36) — both assisted by Ribblett to give Bishop McCourt a 4-2 advantage. Ulianov and Vladyslav Bomaziuk later assisted Zhadanov on his second goal (4:32) for Bishop McCourt to walk away with a 5-2 victory.

Swimming

State College (boys): Trevor Martin finished with a time of 2:14.66 in the 200-meter and a time of 5:18.55 in the 500-meter. Erik Witt finished with a time of 107.88 in the 100-meter breaststroke and 1:55.51 in the 200-meter freestyle.

State College (girls): State College defeated Mifflin County 139-17 on Tuesday. Ally Koehle finished with a 2:25.40 time in the 200-meter individual medley and a 5:54.57 in the 500-meter freestyle. Nora Hein had a 1:04.67 time in the 100-meter fly and 1:16 in the 100-meter breaststroke.

Bucknell Invitational (Friday): State College’s Sam Huggins finished first with a 1:46.44 time in the 200-meter freestyle. Little Lions swimmer Jade Castro took first place in the 100-meter backstroke (55.98). State College’s John Brownstead was in second place in the 50-meter freestyle and the the 100-meter fly with times of 22.0 and 52.6, respectively.

Wrestling

Bald Eagle: The Eagles suffered their first loss of the season to Clearfield (32-22) on Tuesday, but came back and earned a 47-15 victory over the Mounties on Thursday.

Bellefonte: Bellefonte had a perfect week in duals, as it went 5-0.

The Raiders started with a win over Penns Valley (44-30) on Tuesday. Then, Bellefonte went to P-O to compete in the Mountaineer Classic, where they picked up wins over Glendale (44-27), Altoona (38-27), the Mounties (32-28) and Punxsutawney (51-9).

The Raiders’ win over Punxsutawney was coach Mike Maney’s 200th of his career.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley rebounded after the loss to the Raiders with a 54-23 road win over Mifflinburg on Wednesday. The Rams then headed to Meadville for the Tool City Tournament.

They finished fourth as a team with 145 points. Penns Valley had a champ in Ty Watson (145 pounds) and a runner-up in Cole Felker (172). The Rams had Carter Homan (126, 7th), Colten Shunk (120, 3rd), David Martin (152, 4th), Ethan Fetterolf (145, 4th), Hunter Lyons (189, 6th), Jack Darlington (106, 3rd) and Micah Fetterolf (160, 6th) also place. Ethan Fetterolf nearly setup an all-Penns Valley final, but suffered a loss in the semifinals.

Philipsburg-Osceola: P-O went 3-1 in its tournament with wins over Glendale (45-27), Punxsutawney (60-18) and Altoona (42-30, for a second time this season).
