HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Jan. 10-15 in Centre County high school sports

Penns Valley boys basketball’s Zach Braucht continued to impress with performances of 36 and 20 points in back-to-back victories against Clearfield, where he reached 1,000 career points, and Saint Joe’s. Bellefonte boys basketball’s Blair Eckley-Jones scored a total of 52 points in games against Philipsburg-Osceola and Juniata.
Here are some more highlights from Jan. 10-15.
Basketball
Bald Eagle (boys): The Eagles dropped 76-49 to Tyrone on Monday. They came close to victory on Thursday, but were harmed by a number of missed calls and missed opportunities, losing to Huntingdon 60-56. BEA’s Cam Watkins led the scoring push with 12 points, Blaze Angellotti had 10, Tyler Serb added 10, Kahale Burns provided eight points, Chase Thompson and Alex Gavlock both totaled seven and Ethan Koleno had two.
Bald Eagle (girls): BEA lost to Tyrone 46-26 at home on Tuesday in a Mountain League matchup. Their next game was against non-conference opponent Purchase Line on Wednesday at home, where BEA dropped 67-36. Huntingdon defeated BEA 55-31 in a road Mountain League game on Friday.
Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte began its week with a 76-69 victory over P-O on Monday night. DJ McCaslin had 21 points, along with Blair Eckley-Jones’ 19 and Ty Kroell’s 11 to round out their top scoring efforts. The Red Raiders improved to 9-1 on Wednesday by defeating Juniata 64-30. Eckley-Jones had a game-high 33 points, McCaslin added 12 and Nick Way had 10. Bellefonte dropped to 9-2 with a close 55-54 loss against Tyrone on Thursday.
Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte netted its second win of the season with a 40-22 victory over P-O on Monday. They went on to drop their next game to Tyrone, 49-15, on Friday.
Penns Valley (boys): Hollidaysburg defeated Penns Valley 75-54 on Monday. The Rams got back to their winning ways on Thursday with a 53-48 victory over Clearfield. Zach Braucht had 36 points to eclipse the 1000-point mark in his career. Penns Valley won a second consecutive game on Friday against Saint Joe’s. Braucht scored 20, Kyle Niewinski scored eight, Aidan Culver had six, Jackson Romig four, Logan Crater added four, Colin Niewinski had four, Dakota Brodzina and Maclain Welshans finished with two points a piece.
Penns Valley (girls): Penns Valley’s boys basketball team wasn’t the only team to knock off Clearfield this week. The girls were able to pull off a 45-37 road victory against Clearfield, notching their third win of the season in overtime. Kailen Winkelblech had a team-high 19 points, followed by Ann-Marie McMurtrie, Katie Romig and Cate Goodwin, who had six points each.
P-O (boys): P-O lost to Bellefonte 76-69 on Monday, Jacob Desimone had a team-high 25 points, Jeremy Whitehead added 18 points, Nick Johnson provided 11 points, Oliver Harpster had nine points and Tristan Doyle had six points. The Mounties lost 62-52 against Hollidaysburg on Thursday at home. Desimone had a team-high 19 points, Whitehead added 16 points, Harpster had seven points, Doyle and Colby Hahn had four and Johnson had two.
P-O (girls): P-O lost to Bellefonte 40-22 at home on Monday. The Lady Mounties dropped a 60-21 game to Juniata on Saturday at home, falling to 2-7 on the year.
Saint Joe’s (boys): Saint Joe’s lost to Southern Huntingdon County on Wednesday 63-46. Tim Peters scored a team-high 10 points in the team’s 50-26 loss against Penns Valley on Friday.
State College (boys): The Little Lions basketball team defeated Harrisburg 85-68 on Tuesday. State College lost 47-46 in a close game with Erie on Saturday.
State College (girls): State College split 1-1 on the week with a loss to Harrisburg on Tuesday on the road, 58-55. They went on to notch a victory over Central Dauphin East by a score of 41-22.
Ice Hockey
State College (boys): State College lost 5-0 against Westmont-Hilltop on Friday. Nicholas Rozich scored an even strength goal with an assist from Alan Nikonow Jr (16:27) to take a 1-0 lead in the first period. Aiden Rice had an even strength goal with Evan Allen and Kobe Rickabaugh providing assists (0:42). Rozich scored his second even strength goal on assists by Rice and Rickabaugh (8:12) to give Westmont-Hilltop a 3-0 advantage in the second period. Rice scored an even strength goal on an assist from Kyle Replogle (13:32) and Rickabaugh had a goal on an assist from Parker Lavis (15:50) to give the Hilltopers a 5-0 lead.
Wrestling
Bald Eagle: The Eagles went a perfect 5-0 this week. They topped the Rams 40-29 on Wednesday. On Saturday, BEA had wins over Susquenita (47-12), Juniata (50-11), West Perry (35-31) and Selinsgrove (40-27) to claim the Juniata Duals team title.
Coen Bainey (120 pounds), Jeffre Pifer (138/145), Caleb Close (172) and Noah Foltz (189) were the lone Eagles wrestlers to go 4-0 during the Juniata Duals.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte was 2-0 in its duals, earning home wins over Hollidaysburg (50-21, Tuesday) and Jersey Shore (54-12, Wednesday). There were a handful of Raiders that earned wins in both duals, which included Cameron Garcia (106), Garrett Choates (113), Aidan O’Shea (132/138), Alex James (138/152), Gage Long (145), Jude Swisher (160) and Addison Shawley (189).
Penns Valley: The Rams had the lightest week of work with just one lone dual. They suffered that loss to BEA, but winners for Penns Valley in the dual were David Martin (152), Micah Fetterolf (160), Cole Felker (172), Jack Darlington (106), Carter Homan (126) and Ty Watson (145).
P-O: The Mounties lost to Huntingdon 37-30 on Tuesday. However, they rebounded nicely to go 2-1 during the Husky Duals at Mifflin County High School on Saturday. P-O topped Manheim Central (54-24) and Trinity (48-22), but fell to the host Huskies (64-6).
Marcus Gable (138/145) was the lone Mounties wrestler to have a perfect day during the Husky Duals.
State College: State College had a dual with Mifflin County that was a nail-bitter throughout. However, the Little Lions came up short in a 34-28 loss on Wednesday. Winners for the Little Lions were Johnathan Coates (106), Asher Cunningham (120), Eric Weaver (126), Owen Barr (138), Pierson Manville (145) and Nick Pavlechko (215).
