HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Jan. 17-22 in Centre County high school sports

Philipsburg-Osceola’s Jeremy Whitehead is set to join the 1,000-point club, after he scored 21 against Bald Eagle on Friday. On Thursday, two State College ice hockey players finished with hat tricks in their 11-0 victory over Greater Johnstown.

Here are some more highlights from Jan. 17-22.

Basketball

BEA (boys): The Eagles were defeated by Bellefonte 60-48 on Tuesday. Alex Gavlock was the high scorer for BEA, finishing with 11 points. Cam Watkins ended with 10 points, Chase Thompson had nine, Ethan Koleno finished with six, Blaze Angellotti, Kahale Burns and Tyler Serb had four points apiece. BEA lost 65-34 to Mount Union in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday. The Eagles dropped a road game 65-53 against Mountain League rival P-O on Friday, falling to 3-11 on the year and 0-9 in Mountain League play.

BEA (girls): BEA broke away from their four-game losing streak with a 56-16 victory over P-O on Thursday night. Kierra Serb led all scorers with 13 points, Maddie Derry had 12 points, Abby Hoover had 10, Taylor Habovick finished with seven, Olivia Boone added six, Sybil Thompson provided four, Gabby Perry and Rachel Bryan had two points each. The Lady Eagles are now 4-6 on the season and 2-5 in Mountain League play.

Bellefonte (boys): The Red Raiders defeated BEA 60-48 on the road on Tuesday. Blair Eckley-Jones had 19 points, Nick Way finished with 14, DJ McCaslin had 11, Gannon Brungard added 11, Jacob Corman and Ty Kroell had two. Bellefonte notched another win, defeating Huntingdon 72-62 on the road on Friday. Way finished with 19 points and Kroell and McCaslin both had 12 points. Eckley-Jones finished with 11 on the night. Bellefonte is now 11-2 on the season and 6-2 in Mountain League play.

Bellefonte (girls): The Lady Raiders dropped a close home matchup to Huntingdon by a score of 52-48 in overtime on Thursday. They played against DuBois in a non-conference game the following day, losing 44-18. Bellefonte is now 2-12 on the year and 2-6 in Mountain League play.

Penns Valley (boys): Penns Valley had a 74-71 loss against Huntingdon in overtime on Wednesday. The Rams bounced back with a 52-45 victory against Tyrone on Friday. Zach Braucht had a team-high 19 points. Penns Valley sits at 5-8 on the season and 3-5 in Mountain League play.

Penns Valley (girls): Penns Valley defeated Mount Union 47-23 on Tuesday. Ann-Marie McMutrie had a team-high 11 points. Kailen Winkelblech and Scotty Dinges both had 10 points each. The Lady Rams lost 62-46 on Wednesday to Huntingdon. Winkelblech finished with a career-high 28 points to lead all scorers. McMutrie had nine points. On Thursday, Penns Valley lost to Tyrone 58-28. McMutrie had 11 points, Julia Emel added seven points, Winkelblech had five. The Lady Rams are now 4-8 on the year and 3-4 in Mountain League play.

P-O (boys): The Mounties defeated BEA 65-53 on Friday with a packed crowd to honor the 1976 Mountain League champions. Jeremy Whitehead had a team-high 21 points and needs 77 more to score 1,000, Jacob Desimone added 16, Oliver Harpster had 12, Nick Johnson had seven points and 14 rebounds, Brandon Hahn finished with five and Tristan Doyle had two to round out their scoring. P-O is now 7-4 on the year and 3-4 in Mountain League play.

P-O (girls): The Mounties lost 43-18 to Moshannon Valley on Wednesday. P-O lost to Bald Eagle 56-16 on Thursday night. Khendyl Sharrer was the team’s leading scorer with 12 points, Lily Warlow scored three and Maddy Malinich made a free throw.

Saint Joe’s (boys): Saint Joe’s took on Montoursville in a non-league matchup on Jan. 17, losing 60-30. The Wolfpack had another non-conference game against Juniata Valley on Wednesday, dropping their battle 89-21. Saint Joe’s is now 5-10 on the season and 1-0 in Tri-Valley play.

State College (boys): The Little Lions lost to Cumberland Valley 77-44 at home in Mid-Penn Commonwealth play on Tuesday. State College bounced back with a 70-69 road victory over conference rival Carlisle on Friday. The Little Lions are now 7-9 on the year and 4-6 in conference play.

State College (girls): State College lost 62-52 against Cumberland Valley on the road on Tuesday. The Little Lions traveled to Central York on Saturday, losing 56-44. State College is now 5-8 on the year and 3-5 in Mid-Penn Commonwealth play.

Cheerleading

P-O (girls): The Mountie competition cheerleading team won 1st Place in the varsity division of the Mountain League and became Grand Champions.

Ice Hockey

State College (boys): The Little Lions had their largest margin of victory this season, defeating Greater Johnstown 11-0 on Thursday. Zander Faust and Rees Engel both finished with a hat trick on the night. Thomas Hay had two goals, Luke Janac, Tyler Morrison and Jack Messina finished with a goal each. State College goalie Carter Forzard had eight saves on eight shots, finishing the night with a shutout.

Swimming

State College (boys): State College boys improved to 5-0 with a 104-54 victory over Chambersburg on Tuesday. John Brownstead finished with a victory in the 50-meter freestyle (22.26) and the 100-meter breaststroke (1:05.3) Sam Huggins had a victory in the 200-meter freestyle (1:46.64) and the 500-meter freestyle (4:50.71).

State College (girls): State College girls notched their fifth victory of the season against Chambersburg with a 114-60 win. The Little Lions are now 5-0 on the season. Mackenzie Pagett had a win in the 50-meter freestyle (26.78) and in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:08.85). Lily Bange won the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 1:06.49.

State College’s boys and girls swim teams will take on Carlisle on Monday.

Wrestling

Bald Eagle: The Eagles defeated Hollidaysburg 58-6 on Tuesday; Noah Foltz (189) pinned Luke Onkst, 2:35 (6-0), Gavin Guenot (106) finished with a 6-0 decision against Carson Krupka (9-6), Lucas Fye (113) pinned Bryce Conway, 0:16 (15-6) and Owen Johnson (120) pinned Noah Horne, 2:16 (21-6). Hunter Gardner (126) pinned Mason Schenk, 3:12 (27-6). Kevin Taylor won by a technical fall over Jacob Brua, 16-0 5:03 (32-6) in 132-pound match. Jeffre Pifer (138) pinned Mitchell Baronner, 0:50 (38-6), and Grace Stem (145) won by technical fall over Quinton Ritchey, 24-9 5:01 (43-6). Taten Yoder (152) won by forfeit (49-6) and Cameron Dubbs (160) won by forfeit (55-6); Caleb Close (172) had a 4-0 decision over Aaron Sleeth (58-6).

Bald Eagle lost to Central Mountain 45-21 on Thursday’s Senior Night. Close (172) had a 5-0 decision against Rocco Serafini (19-3), Foltz (215) pinned Micah Walizer, 1:33 (25-9), Guenot (106) won by forfeit (28-15) and the Fye (113) pinned Clayton Foster, 1:00 (28-21) for the Eagles four individual victories of the night.

Big 7 Tournament: Central Mountain won with 190.0 points, followed by Bald Eagle Area (137.5), Shikellamy (115.0), State College (110.0), Bellefonte (94.5), Altoona (69.0), Jersey Shore (53.0) and Hollidaysburg (42.0).

Penns Valley: The Rams lost to P-O 36-29 on Tuesday. Jack Darlington (106) pinned Sam McDonald, 3:29 (6-6). Nate Long (132) had a 14-4 major decision over Scott Frantz (21-10). Ty Watson (145) pinned Ian Phillips, 0:56 (27-16). Cole Felker (172) pinned Jimmy Richtscheit, 2:29 (36-22). Hunter Lyons (189) had a 7-1 decision over Dominic Shaw (36-25). Kollin Brungart (215) had an 8-0 major decision over Andrew Hensal (36-29).

Penns Valley defeated West Branch 63-9 on Thursday in a home meet. Darlington (106) (6-0), Henry Mayer (113) (12-0) and Carter Homan (126) (18-3) each won by forfeit. Long (132) pinned Hunter Schnarrs, 1:29 (24-3) Ethan Fetterolf (138) pinned Nick Stavola, 2:59 (30-3). Watson (145) pinned Aaron Myers, 3:24 (36-3). David Martin (152) pinned John Myers, 0:55 (42-3). Micah Fetterolf (160) pinned Tyce Cantolina, 1:03 (48-3). Felker (172) pinned Logan Folmar, 2:34 (54-3). Hunter Lyons (189) pinned Austin Kerin, 1:20 (60-3). Brungart (215) had a 3-2 decision against Billy Bumbarger (63-3).

P-O: The Mounties defeated Penns Valley 36-29 on Tuesday. Chase Klinger won by forfeit (6-0) in the 285-pound weight class. Hunter Kephart (113) won by forfeit (12-6). Nick Coudriet (120) pinned Colten Shunk, 2:37 (18-6). Ben Gustkey (126) had a 6-5 decision over Chase Fleshman (21-6). Marcus Gable (138) pinned Ethan Fetterolf, 4:29 (27-10). Austin Foster (152) pinned David Martin, 1:46 (33-16). Luke Hughes (160) had a 4-2 decision over Micah Fetterolf (36-16).

P-O defeated DuBois 49-20 on Thursday. Coudriet (120) pinned Gage Sonnie, 2:41 (6-0). Gustkey (126) had a 9-1 major decision against Gavin Rucinski (10-0). Marcus Gable (138) pinned Davey Aughenbaugh, 5:05 (16-5). Hughes (160) had a 3-1 decision against Cadin Delaney (19-14). Jimmy Richtscheit (170) pinned Eric Guzman, 0:20 (25-14). Dominic Shaw (189) pinned Garret Nissel, 2:41 (31-14). Andrew Hensal (215) pinned Ian Pancake, 4:56 (37-14). Zach Gallagher (285) pinned Chase Klinger, 5:02 (37-20). On Saturday, P-O defeated Marion Center 55-12. Scott Frantz (132) pinned Carter Gilmore, 5:59 (6-0). Marcus Gable (138) had a 5-0 decision over Liam Cornetto (9-0). Foster (152) pinned Evan Miller, 1:42 (15-6). Hughes (160) had a 11-2 major decision against Calvin Rombaugh (19-6). Shaw (189) won by forfeit (25-12). Andrew Hensal (215) had a 1-0 decision against Cody Willard (28-12). Klinger (285) pinned Daniel Smith, 1:16 (34-12). Sam McDonald (106) won by forfeit (40-12). Kephart (113) won by forfeit (46-12). Coudriet (120) won by forfeit (52-12). Gustkey (120) had a 6-3 decision against Camden Stewart (55-12).

State College: The Little Lions were defeated 46-20 by Central Dauphin on Thursday. Carter Weaverling (189) notched an 8-0 major decision over Eli Poyer (6-4). Nick Pavlechko (215) pinned Carson Cassel, 4:47 (6-10). Asher Cunningham (120) had an 11-2 major decision against Dallas Schorr (24-14). Pierson Manville (145) pinned Jeremiah Craig, 1:00 (41-20). It was Manville’s 150th career victory.
