HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Jan. 24-29 in Centre County high school sports

Penns Valley girls basketball played in four games last week with senior forward Kailen Winkelblech scoring double digits in each game. In Bellefonte, boys basketball senior Blair Eckley-Jones continued his strong season of scoring with a total of 48 points in two games. In State College, the girls swimming team remains undefeated.
Here are some more highlights from Jan. 24-29.
Basketball
Bald Eagle (Boys): Bald Eagle strung together three consecutive victories on the week. The team began its week with a 51-40 home victory over Clearfield on Tuesday. They defeated Saint Joe’s 52-37 on Thursday and narrowly edged out Penns Valley 33-32 on Friday. The Eagles now hold a 6-11 record and are 2-9 in Mountain League play.
Bald Eagle (Girls): The Lady Eagles loss to East Juniata by a score of 38-19 on Tuesday. They went on to defeat Penns Valley in a home Mountain League matchup 51-46 on Thursday. Bald Eagle is 6-8 overall on the season and has a 4-5 record in league play.
Bellefonte (Boys): Bellefonte lost to Penns Valley 50-42 on Tuesday. DJ McCaslin had 11 points in the game. Bellefonte went on to defeat Jersey Shore 54-48 on Thursday with Blair Eckley-Jones scoring a team-high 28 points and Nick Way adding 11 points. The Red Raiders beat Hollidaysburg 67-51 and were led by Eckley-Jones’ 20 points. Gannon Brungard had 14 points, McCaslin had 13 and Way added 10. Bellefonte is now 13-3 on the year and 8-3 in league play.
Bellefonte (Girls): Bellefonte lost 47-36 against Penns Valley on Monday. The Lady Raiders lost 50-30 in an away matchup against Mifflinburg and had 63-14 home loss to Hollidaysburg on Friday night. Bellefonte hosted its Military Appreciation Night on Friday, after raising $750 for the Centre County Veterans Assistance Fund with their Shoot-A-Thon.
Penns Valley (Boys): Penns Valley defeated Bellefonte 50-42 on Tuesday, powered by Zach Braucht’s 18 points. The Rams lost to Bald Eagle 33-32 on Friday. Braucht had 12 points and Kyle Niewinski added eight points. Penns Valley is now 7-9 overall and 4-6 in Mountain League play.
Penns Valley (Girls): Penns Valley defeated Bellefonte 47-36 on Monday’s senior night. Kailen Winkelblech had 18 points, Katie Romig had 16 points and Scotty Dinges had eight points. Penns Valley defeated P-O 53-24 on Wednesday. Winkelblech had a game-high 20 points with Romig and Julia Emel scoring eight points each. The Lady Rams lost 51-46 against Bald Eagle with Winkelblech scoring 18 points, along with Dinges’ nine and Ann-Marie McMutrie’s seven on Thursday. Penns Valley ended its week with a 48-39 loss to Saint Mary’s. Winkelblech added 13 points on Friday.
P-O (Boys): P-O defeated Tyrone 52-45 on Monday, outscoring them 30-13 in the second half. Jeremy Whitehead and Nick Johnson both had 10 rebounds. The Mounties defeated Huntingdon 57-42 on Johnson’s 19 points and 19 rebounds. Clearfield narrowly edged out P-O 58-56 on Saturday. P-O now holds a 10-5 record overall and are 5-5 in league play.
P-O (Girls): The Mounties lost 74-13 against Tyrone on Monday, a 53-24 loss to Penns Valley on Wednesday and a 54-23 loss to Huntingdon on Thursday. They are now 3-13 on the year and 0-9 in Mountain League play.
Saint Joe’s (Boys): The Wolfpack lost 52-37 to Bald Eagle in a road non-conference game on Thursday. Saint Joe’s now sits at 5-11 on the year and hold a 1-0 record in league play.
State College (Boys): State College went 1-1 on the week with a 45-29 victory over rival Altoona and a 74-66 loss against Central Dauphin on the road. The Little Lions are now 8-11 on the season and 5-7 in conference play.
State College (Girls): State College hosted the Blue Out game to raise funds for former junior varsity boys basketball head coach Rudy Burruss’ treatment for colon cancer and Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The Lady Little Lions lost 55-40 with a team-high 13 points coming from Jordyn Steindl. Steindl led the team in scoring once again with a 10-point performance in a 56-34 loss against Central Dauphin. State College is now 5-10 on the year and 3-7 in league play.
Cheerleading
P-O: P-O competed in the PIAA state championships in competitive cheerleading on Friday. They fell short of the semifinals with a number of deductions to end their season.
Ice Hockey
State College (Boys): State College defeated Hollidaysburg 5-1 on Thursday. Ben Lee had a goal in the second (6:36) and third period (6:53). Zander Faust, Colin Wible and Luke Janac scored the remainder of the Little Lions’ goals. Hollidaysburg’s lone goal scorer was Zachary Dunlap (15:56) in the second period.
Swimming
State College (Boys): The Little Lions lost 97-86 against Hershey on Tuesday. John Brownstead finished with a time of 22.19 in the 50-meter freestyle and 53.34 in the 100-meter fly. The boys 200-meter medley relays team that consisted of Ty Uhlig, Shawn Erdley, John Brownstead and Sam Huggins, finished with a time of 1:38.80. Diver Dean Branne won his event with a score of 182.55. The State College boys are now 6-1 on the year.
State College (Girls): State College defeated Hershey 97-86 on Tuesday. Jade Castro won the 200-meter individual medley (2:08.22) and the 100-meter backstroke (57.58). Madison Watschke won the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 25.48 and Ally Koehle was victorious in the 100-meter fly (1:01.10). Tassia St. Pierre won the diving event with a score of 193.62. The State College girls are still undefeated with a 7-0 record.
Wrestling
Bellefonte: The Raiders didn’t have any duals during the week, but instead competed in the Rumble in the Den dual tournament at Meadowbrook Christian High School on Saturday. They went 3-0 and outscored their opponents 181-30. Bellefonte is now 10-1 on the season.
Bald Eagle Area: The Eagles picked up a dual victory on Tuesday over Tyrone, 43-23. They had wins from Lucas Fye (113, major decision), Coen Bainey (120, fall), Hunter Gardner (126, fall), Jeffre Pifer (138, decision), Mason Reese (152, fall), Caleb Close (172, fall), Noah Foltz (189, fall) and Matthew Knepp (215, fall).
BEA went to the Ultimate Warrior Tournament on Friday and Saturday at West Branch High School. The Eagles finished fifth as a team with 127 points. They had five placewinners in Bainey (120, 1st), Foltz (189, 2nd), Fye (113, 4th), Close (172, 5th) and Guenot (106, 7th).
Penns Valley: The Rams opened their week by pummeling Hollidaysburg, 51-15, on Tuesday. Winners for Penns Valley were Colten Shunk (120, fall), Carter Homan (126, decision), Nate Long (132, technical fall), Ty Watson (145, fall), David Martin (152, forfeit), Micah Fetterolf (160, forfeit), Cole Felker (172, decision), Hunter Lyons (189, fall), Josh Spahr (215, fall), Jack Darlington (106, major decision).
The Rams headed to Grove City for the Fred Bell Tournament on Friday and Saturday. They claimed the team title with 157.5 points — 26.5 points higher than second place, Pine Richland. Penns Valley had seven placewinners in Watson (145, 1st), Darlington (106, 4th), Shunk (120, 4th), Kolin Brungart (215, 5th), Lyons (189, 5th), Martin (152, 7th) and Felker (172, 7th).
Philipsburg-Osceola: The Mounties won the last two bouts of their dual with Mount Union on Tuesday to rally for a 36-30 win. Dom Shaw (215, fall) and Chase Klinger (285, decision) earned those victories for P-O. Other winners for the Mounties included Nick Coudriet (120, fall), Scott Frantz (132, decision), Marcus Gable (138, fall), Ian Phillips (152, fall) and Austin Foster (160, fall).
On Friday and Saturday, P-O competed in the Ultimate Warrior Tournament, where they finished 13th as a team with 78 points. It had three placewinners in Foster (152, 4th), Coudriet (120, 7th) and Gable (138, 7th).
State College: The Little Lions had three duals this week for their action. They took care of Cedar Cliff, 36-33, on Tuesday, but needed to win their last four bouts to rally.
Braden Newby (172, fall), Carter Weaverling (189, fall), Nick Pavlechko (215, fall) and Shane Focht (285, decision ultimate tie-breaker) all earned those much needed wins for State College. Asher Cunningham (120, fall), Eric Weaver (126, decision), Pierson Manville (138, fall) were also winners for the Little Lions.
On Saturday, State College had two duals at different schools. It opened with a 31-29 loss to Cumberland Valley, but rebounded for a 39-25 win over Chambersburg. Cunningham, Jacob Campbell (132), Manville and Pavlechko had perfect days for the Little Lions.
