HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Jan. 31-Feb. 5 in Centre County high school sports

Bellefonte boys basketball forward Blair Eckley-Jones continued his hot streak by scoring a total of 30 points in the week. Penns Valley girls basketball senior Kailen Winkelblech scored 35 points, fresh off a week that landed her Centre Daily Times’ Athlete of the Week.
Here are some more highlights from Jan. 31-Feb. 5.
Basketball
Bald Eagle (boys): Bald Eagle lost 65-54 on the road against Hollidaysburg on Tuesday. The Eagles are now 7-12 overall and carry a 2-10 record in Mountain League play.
Bald Eagle (girls): Hollidaysburg defeated Bald Eagle 101-28 on Jan. 31. The Lady Eagles jumped back into the win column with a 45-43 victory over Bellefonte on Wednesday. Bald Eagle has a 7-9 record and holds a 5-6 mark in Mountain League play.
Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte defeated Dubois 45-35 on Jan. 31. Gannon Brungard had 14 points and Eckley-Jones added 11 points. The Red Raiders defeated Clearfield 64-56 on Tuesday with Eckley-Jones scoring 19 points. Brungard and Nick Way added 14 points each. Bellefonte is now 15-3 on the year and 8-3 in Mountain League play.
Bellefonte (girls): The Lady Raiders dropped their Jan. 31 road matchup against Clearfield by a 48-24 score. Bald Eagle narrowly defeated Bellefonte 45-43 on Wednesday. The Lady Raiders now hold a 2-17 record and a 2-10 mark in Mountain League play.
Penns Valley (boys): Penns Valley lost 56-42 on Tuesday against P-O. Zach Braucht had a team-high 13 points for the Rams, followed by Kyle Niewinski’s nine points and Aidan Culver’s eight. Penns Valley is now 8-10 on the year with a 5-7 record in Mountain League play.
Penns Valley (girls): The Lady Rams defeated P-O 52-28 on Jan. 31. Winkelblech led the way with 19 points. Scotty Dinges had eight points and Cate Goodwin added seven. Penns Valley lost 46-39 to Montoursville on Wednesday. Winkelblech had a team-high 16 points, Julia Emel had eight and Ann-Marie McMutrie was the third leading scorer with seven points. Penns Valley is now 7-11 overall and holds a 6-5 record in Mountain League play.
P-O (boys): P-O defeated Penns Valley 56-42 on Tuesday to improve to 11-6 on the year and 6-6 in Mountain League play. Oliver Harpster had a team-high 14 points, Jacob Desimone added 13, along with Jeremy Whitehead’s 11 and Nick Johnson’s 10.
P-O (girls): The Mounties lost 52-28 on the road against Penns Valley on Jan. 31. P-O is now 2-16 overall and 0-10 in Mountain League play.
Saint Joe’s (boys): Saint Joe’s lost to Dubois Central Catholic 72-54 on Jan. 31. The Wolfpack went on to defeat Southern Huntingdon County 34-33 on Wednesday to improve to a 6-12 record on the season.
State College (boys): The Little Lions lost 64-58 on Tuesday to Chambersburg. Braeden Shrewsberry had a team-high 18 points and scored his 1,000th career point in the third quarter. Ryan Perks had 13 points and Jaden Mitchell had nine. State College is now 8-12 on the year with a 5-8 record in Mid Penn Conference play.
State College (girls): The Lady Little Lions defeated Chambersburg 44-38 on Tuesday. Jessica Hawbaker had a team-high 14 points on the night with Carley Donnell adding 12 points and Diana Tsarnakova finishing with eight. State College is now 6-11 on the year and 4-7 in Mid Penn Conference play.
Ice Hockey
State College (boys): State College’s game against Altoona was canceled due to COVID-19 protocols. The Little Lions will take on Central Cambria at 8 p.m. Thursday at Pegula Ice Arena. They sit at 9-3 on the season.
Swimming
State College (boys): State College improved to 7-1 on the season with a 102-49 victory over Hollidaysburg on Wednesday. The Little Lions are set to head to the Mid Penn Conference Championships this weekend at Cumberland Valley.
State College (girls): The Little Lions trounced Hollidaysburg 132-38 on Wednesday to improve to 8-0 on the season. They too will head to the Mid Penn Conference Championships on Friday and Saturday.
Wrestling
Bald Eagle Area: The Eagles garnered the No. 1 seed in the District 6 Class 2A dual championships, and went 2-1. They topped Penns Valley on Tuesday, 45-24, in the quarterfinals. Winners for BEA were Gavin Guenot (113, forfeit), Lucas Fye (120, decision), Coen Bainey (126, pin), Kevin Taylor (132, decision), Jeffre Pifer (138, pin), Cameron Dubbs (160, pin), Caleb Close (189, decision), Noah Foltz (215, pin) and Matthew Knepp (285, pin).
The Eagles then hosted Forest Hills, Tyrone and Huntingdon for the semifinals and finals on Saturday. BEA suffered a 32-30 loss to Forest Hills in the D6 semifinals, but rebounded for a third-place team finish by routing Huntingdon, 53-13. Close, Dubbs, Fye and Bainey were the lone double winners on the day for the Eagles.
Bellefonte: The Raiders had just one dual this week, as a regular season contest with Clearfield was postponed. Bellefonte’s dual was against Central Mountain in the District 6 Class 3A semifinals Saturday at Mifflin County High School.
The Raiders were the No. 2 seed against the No. 3 Wildcats, but it was the lower seed coming away with a 37-26 win. Winners for Bellefonte were Addison Shawley (215, pin), Tyler Putnam (285, decision), Cameron Garcia (106, forfeit), Garrett Choates (113, major decision), Aidan O’Shea (138, decision) and Jude Swisher (152, major decision).
Penns Valley: The Rams had two duals in one day as part of the District 6 Championships as the No. 8 seed. They topped Mount Union, 56-15, in the first round at Bald Eagle Area, before dropping that quarterfinals match with the Eagles later on Tuesday.
Double winners for Penns Valley were Jack Darlington (113, major decision and forfeit), Ty Watson (145, forfeit and pin), David Martin (152, two pins) and Cole Felker (172, two pins).
Philipsburg-Osceola: The Mounties also had two duals in one day on Tuesday with being in the District 6 Championships as the No. 5 seed. However, they had a regular season dual too with Hollidaysburg on Wednesday.
P-O routed Central Cambria, 49-18, in the D6 first round, before suffering a 51-9 loss to the eventual district champions in Forest Hills in the quarterfinals. Nick Coudriet was the lone double winner on Tuesday for the Mounties with a forfeit and pin.
P-O rebounded by taking care of the Golden Tigers, 45-27. Winners for the Mounties were Coudriet (120, pin), Scott Frantz (132, decision), Marcus Gable (138, pin), Ian Phillips (145, pin), Austin Foster (152, forfeit), Jimmy Richtscheit (160, forfeit), Dominic Shaw (189, pin) and Hunter Kephart (113, pin).
State College: The Little Lions had just one dual this week as too many injuries forced them not to participate in the District 6 Class 3A dual championships. State College took on Williamsport, who is ranked No. 5 in the state by PA Power Wrestling, on Monday, and suffered a 53-16 defeat.
The Little Lions had three winners in Asher Cunningham (120, technical fall), Pierson Manville (145, pin) and Nick Pavlechko (215, technical fall).
