HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Feb. 7-12 in Centre County high school sports

The State College girls swim team ended its regular season undefeated and had an impressive showing Saturday at the Mid Penn Championships. Penns Valley girls basketball’s Kailen Winkelblech had a 24-point performance in the team’s victory over Clearfield on Feb. 7.

Here are some more high school sports highlights from the week of Feb. 7-12.

Basketball

Bald Eagle (boys): Bald Eagle won 38-37 in overtime against St. Mary’s at home on Feb. 7. The Eagles lost 82-59 against Huntingdon on Feb. 9 and lost 49-40 to Tyrone on Friday. The Eagles sit at 8-14 on the year and hold a 2-12 record in the Mountain League.

Bald Eagle (girls): Bald Eagle lost 56-50 to Huntingdon on Feb. 7. The Lady Eagles followed up with a 45-18 victory over P-O on Feb. 8. Clearfield defeated Bald Eagle 45-31 on Feb. 9. The Lady Eagles are now 8-11 on the year and 6-8 in Mountain League play.

Bellefonte (boys): The Red Raiders defeated Tyrone 59-42 at home on Feb. 8. Eckley-Jones scored a team-high 16 points, Nick Way had 13, Ty Kroell added 12 and Cole Crissman had seven points. Bellefonte lost 55-50 against P-O on Feb. 11. Gannon Brungard led the way with 18 points, Eckley-Jones added 13 points and Way had eight. Bellefonte is now 17-4 on the season and are 9-4 in Mountain League play.

Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte lost 81-29 on Feb. 7. The Lady Raiders lost 64-39 on Feb. 9 to Jersey Shore and are now 2-19 on the year and 2-11 in Mountain League play.

Penns Valley (boys): Penns Valley opened the week with a 42-39 loss against Clearfield on Feb. 8. The Rams bounced back with a 44-40 victory over Juniata Valley on Feb. 10. Penns Valley is now 9-11 on the year and hold a 5-8 record in Mountain League play.

Penns Valley (girls): Penns Valley began their week with a 63-44 victory over Clearfield. Winkelblech had a game-high 24 points, Ann-Marie McMurtrie scored 13 points and Katie Romig added nine. The Lady Rams lost to Southern Huntingdon 56-51 on Wednesday. Winkelblech had 15 points, Romig scored 14 and McMurtrie had 10. Penns Valley lost 75-14 against Hollidaysburg on Friday. McMurtrie was the team’s high scorer with six points, Cate Goodwin had five points and Skylar Fleshman had two points. The Lady Rams are now 8-13 on the year and 7-6 in league play.

P-O (boys): P-O sneaked past Hollidaysburg with a 69-65 victory in overtime on Feb. 8. Jacob Desimone had a team-high 16 points, Nick Johnson had 14 points and 17 rebounds and Jeremy Whitehead had 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Mounties went on to defeat Saint Joe’s 65-32 on Feb. 9. Oliver Harpster and Desimone had 17 points, Whitehead had 14 points and 10 rebounds and Johnson had 10 points. P-O defeated Bellefonte 55-50 with Whitehead scoring a team-high 26 points and grabbing 10 rebounds; Johnson had 13 points and 12 rebounds. The Mounties are now 14-6 on the year and 8-6 in Mountain League play.

P-O (girls): P-O began the week with a 71-12 loss against Hollidaysburg on Feb. 7. The Mounties lost 45-18 against Bald Eagle on Feb. 8 and dropped a 52-15 loss on the road to Clearfield on Feb. 10.

Saint Joe’s (boys): Saint Joe’s lost 54-27 against P-O on Feb. 9 in a non-conference game. The Wolfpack lost 66-41 against DuBois Central Catholic at home on Feb. 10. Saint Joe’s is now 6-14 on the season.

State College (boys): The Little Lions dropped their lone game of the week on Feb. 8, losing to Harrisburg 58-56 on the road. State College is now 8-13 on the year and 5-9 in Mid Penn play.

State College (girls): State College defeated Harrisburg 60-36 on Wednesday. Jordyn Steindl had a team-high 22 points, Emma Coudriet had 16 points and Carley Donnell added 12. The Lady Little Lions lost 57-46 against Mifflin County on Friday. Steindl scored a team-high 16 points, Donnell had 12 and Diana Tsarnakova scored eight points. State College is now 9-13 on the year and are 7-7 in Mid Penn play.

Ice Hockey

State College (boys): The Little Lions defeated Central Cambria 7-2 on Feb. 10. Zander Faust had three goals, Alex McGuire and Thomas Hay had two goals each. Hay also had two assists. State College is now 10-3 on the season and fifth in the Laurel Mountain Hockey League.

Swimming

State College (boys): The boys swim team defeated Central Dauphin 109-67 to improve to 8-1 on Feb. 7. John Brownstead, Erik Witt, Ryan Willis, Ryan Chatterly, Connor Johnson and Dean Brannen were head coach Aaron Workman’s swimmers of the meet.

State College (girls): The State College (9-0) girls swim team is undefeated in the 2021-2022 regular season after defeating Central Dauphin 136-44 on Feb 7. Jade Castro broke a pool record in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 55.88. Seniors Mackenzie Pagett, Rachel Shwartzer, Lily Bang and Nora Hein were the swimmers of the meet, according to Workman.

Mid Penn Championships: State College girls finished with a score of 331 on Saturday in the championships at Hershey for third place. Castro won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:05.79. She also won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.94, defeating her previous Mid Penn record of 55.76 on Feb. 19, 2021. The boys team finished second with a score of 277.

Wrestling

Bellefonte: The Raiders were supposed to have two duals this week, but their first one with Tyrone was canceled since the Golden Eagles took part in the PIAA team dual championships. Bellefonte had no problems with Huntingdon as it topped the Bearcats, 44-18, on Wednesday.

Winners for the Raiders were Grady Garrison (160 pounds, pin), Nash Irwin (172, pin), Addison Shawley (189, pin), Tyler Putnam (215, pin), Cameron Garcia (106, decision), Garrett Choates (113, decision), Aidan O’Shea (132, technical fall), Nate Smith (138, decision) and Jude Swisher (152, pin).

Penns Valley: The Rams had just one dual this week, and it was a tough one with Clearfield. The Bison topped Penns Valley, 45-17 on Tuesday.

Winners for the Rams were Colten Shunk (120, technical fall), Nate Long (132, decision), Ty Watson (145, decision) and Jack Darlington (106, pin).

Philipsburg-Osecola: The Mounties had just one dual this week with cross-town rival West Branch on Tuesday. P-O had no problems against the Warriors in a 54-18 rout.

Winners for the Mounties were Marcus Gable (145, pin), Austin Foster (152, pin), Luke Hughes (160, decision), Dominic Shaw (189, pin), Chase Klinger (285, pin), Sam McDonald (106, forfeit), Nick Coudriet (120, forfeit), Ben Gustkey (126, forfeit), Scott Frantz (132, decision) and Ian Phillips (138, pin).
