HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Feb. 21-26 in Centre County high school sports

The high school postseason is in full swing for the Centre County region and a number of local teams advanced. Bellefonte boys basketball will take on Central Mountain in the PIAA District 6 5A boys basketball championship on Monday and State College girls and boys basketball will play in the District 6 6A championships on Monday.
Here are some more high school sports highlights from the week of Feb. 21-26.
Basketball
Bald Eagle (boys): Bald Eagle lost 49-48 in the first round of the PIAA 3A boys basketball playoffs on Feb. 21. The Eagles completed their season with an 8-15 record and a 2-12 record in Mountain League play.
Bald Eagle (girls): Bald Eagle lost to Penns Valley 35-28 on Feb. 21. The Lady Eagles finished their season 8-12 on the year with a 6-8 record in Mountain League play.
Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte defeated Hollidaysburg 63-45 in the PIAA District 6 5A boys basketball semifinals on Feb. 22. Gannon Brungard led with 22 points, followed by Blair Eckley-Jones’ 19 points, while DJ McCaslin added nine points. The Red Raiders will take on Central Mountain in the 5A championship this Monday at 7 p.m. at Bald Eagle High School.
Penns Valley (boys): The sixth-seeded Rams defeated the third-seeded Mounties 51-40 in the quarterfinals of the PIAA District 6 3A boys basketball playoffs on Feb. 22. Zach Braucht scored a team-high 15 points, followed by Maclain Welshans and Aidan Culver, who both had 11 points. Penns Valley lost to Richland 62-49 in the semifinals on Feb. 26. Braucht led with 15 points, followed by Culver’s nine and Kyle Niewinski’s eight points. The Rams will head to the PIAA state playoffs on March 9.
Penns Valley (girls): Penns Valley defeated Bald Eagle 35-28 in the first round of the PIAA District 6 3A girls basketball playoffs on Feb. 21. Julia Emel led with 12 points, followed by Scotty Dinges’ seven and Kailen Winkelblech’s six. The Lady Rams lost 54-35 in the quarterfinals to Forest Hills on Feb. 23. Katie Romig had nine points, followed by Winkelblech’s seven and Emel with six. Penns Valley ended its season 9-15 and held a 7-7 record in Mountain League play.
P-O (boys): Philipsburg-Osceola finished their season on Feb. 22 with a 51-40 loss to Penns Valley. Jeremy Whitehead had a team-high 16 points, Nick Johnson scored nine and Jacob Desimone added six. The Mounties finished their season with a 15-8 record and were 8-6 in Mountain League play.
State College (boys): State College will take on Altoona at Mount Aloysius at 7:30 p.m. on Monday in the District 6 6A boys championship game.
State College (girls): The Lady Little Lions defeated Altoona 38-37 on Feb. 21. State College will take on Mifflin County at Mount Aloysius at 6 p.m. on Monday in the District 6 6A girls championship game.
Ice Hockey
State College (boys): State College’s game against Forest Hills on Feb. 24 was canceled due to winter weather. The Little Lions will take the ice at Bishop McCourt on March 1, then they’ll head to Central Cambria on March 3 and will end their regular season at Conemaugh Valley on March 10. State College is 13-3 on the season and sits in third place in the Laurel Mountain Hockey League with 54 points.
Indoor Track & Field
State College (boys): The Little Lions finished with a time of 7:58.69 in the 4x800-meter relay, which is the ninth lowest time in the United States. Ryan Lindenberg finished eighth in the 400-meter. Sean Adams finished fifth in the boys 800-meter.
State College (girls): State College won gold in the 4x800-meter relays and Shannon Mullin finished with a bronze medal in the long jump. Mullin also finished fourth in the triple jump. Grace Morningstar finished 16th in the girls 800-meter.
Swimming
State College: The Little Lions will host the District 6 2A and 3A boys and girls diving championships on March 3, prior to heading to Hollidaysburg for the District 6 swimming championships on March 4. State College boys and girls swimming will head to the PIAA state championships at Kinney Natatorium at Bucknell University, beginning on March 16.
Wrestling
Bellefonte: The Red Raiders had a District 6 Class 3A champion in Jude Swisher (145). Cameron Garcia (106, 2nd), Garrett Choates (113, 2nd), Noah Weaver (126, 4th), Aidan O’Shea (132, 2nd), Gage Long (138, 3rd), Nate Smith (152, 4th) and Tyler Putnam (285, 4th) also qualified for regionals.
State College: The Little Lions had three champions in Asher Cunningham (120), Pierson Manville (138) and Nick Pavlechko (215) in the District 6 Class 3A championships. Jonathan Coates (106, 3rd), Jacob Campbell (126, 3rd), Josh Hershbine (160, 3rd), Braden Newby (172, 2nd), Carter Weaverling (189, 2nd) and Shane Focht (285, 3rd) also qualified for regionals.
