HS roundup: Here’s what happened from Feb. 28-March 5 in Centre County high school sports

State tournaments are inching closer as district and regional events come to a close in Centre County. Two local boys basketball teams will take part in their respective state tournaments, while plenty of wrestlers and swimmers found success at regionals and districts in the past week.
Here are the highlights from the week that was in Centre County sports from Feb. 28-March 5.
Basketball
Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte lost 53-52 in the PIAA Class 5A District 6 Championship on Feb. 28. Blair Eckley-Jones was the team’s leading scorer with 18, Ty Kroell added 13, Gannon Brungard scored 10, DJ McCaslin finished with seven, and Nick Way and Cole Crissman each had two points.
Penns Valley (boys): Penns Valley fell in the PIAA Class 2A District 6 third place game Wednesday night to Cambria Heights, 59-56, and finished fourth in the district. That finish was good enough to clinch a spot in the PIAA Class 2A Championships, which the Rams will play in Wednesday at 6 p.m. against Shady Side Academy. The game will take place at North Allegheny High School.
State College (boys): State College won the PIAA Class 6A District 6 Championship on Feb. 28, defeating Altoona 63-42. Issac Dye scored a team-high 21 points and was closely followed by Jaden Mitchell’s 20 points. Ryan Perks had eight points, Finn Furmanek added six and Braden Shrewsberry had five. The Little Lions lost 55-53 on Friday to Taylor Allerdice in the 6A sub-regional. They will still compete in the PIAA Class 6A State Basketball Championships, which begin for the Little Lions on the road Wednesday at 6 p.m. against North Hills.
State College (girls): State College lost a hard-fought 49-39 game to Mifflin County on Feb. 28. Jordyn Steindl and Diana Tsarnakova each had 10 points, Jessica Hawbaker added eight, Tori Risha had five, and Madison Fry, Emma Coudriet and Carley Donnell each had two points.
Ice Hockey
State College (boys): State College defeated Bishop McCourt 5-3 on March 1. JP Hay and John Olsen each had an assist. Zander Faust, Joseph Detweiler and Thomas Hay each had two assists. Faust, Thomas Hay and Rees Engel each scored one goal. Alex McGuire scored two goals.
Swimming
Bellefonte (boys): Cedric Bagwell (backstroke), Jacob Skrzycki (breaststroke), Carter Boone (fly) and Jaydon Malinich (freestyle) won bronze in the 200-yard medley relay at the PIAA 2A District 6 Championships. Boone added a gold medal in the 200-yard freestyle and a bronze medal in the 100-yard fly. Their same relay team placed third in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Bellefonte (girls): Kiaha McCool (backstroke), Finley Musser (100 breaststroke), Katelyn Packer (fly) and Emma Pringle (freestyle) won the 200-yard medley relay to open up the PIAA 2A District 6 Championships. McCool won the 200-yard freestyle and Kate Rarrick won bronze. Addie Pringle won bronze in the 50-yard freestyle and Packer also won bronze in the 100-yard fly. Musser, Emma and Addie Pringle and Rarrick won silver in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Addie Pringle finished second in the 100-yard freestyle. Rarrick claimed gold in the 500-yard freestyle, McCool placed second in the 100-yard backstroke and Musser finished second in the 100-yard backstroke. The relay team of McCool, Rarrick, Packer and Addie Pringle finished first in the 400-yard relay.
Penns Valley (boys): Liam Quigley won bronze in the 200-yard freestyle and silver in the 100-yard breaststroke at the PIAA 2A District 6 Championships.
Penns Valley (girls): Penns Valley’s Maggie Delaney took home gold in the 200-yard IM at the PIAA 2A District 6 Championships.
State College (boys): At the PIAA 3A District 6 Championships, State College won the 200-yard medley relay (Tyler Uhlig, Shawn Erdley, John Brownstead and Sam Huggins) and followed up with victories in the 200-yard freestyle with a team of Erdley, Todd Siekman, Erik Witt and Ryan Willis and the 400-yard freestyle — featuring Huggins, Witt, Uhlig and Brownstead.
State College (girls): Jade Castro, Mackenzie Pagett, Ally Koehle and Madison Watschke won the 200-yard medley relays to begin March 4’s PIAA 3A District 6 Championships. Castro also won the 200-yard IM, 200-yard freestyle relay and the 100-yard backstroke. Pagett won the 100-yard backstroke. Koehle, Nora Hein, Kelly Brownstead and Kowalik won gold in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
State College also won seven silver medals: Kowalik 200-yard freestyle, Pagett 200-yard IM, Kelly Brownstead 50-yard freestyle, Koehle 100-yard fly, Hein 500-yard freestyle, Lily Bang 100-yard backstroke, Watschke 100-yard breaststroke) and five bronze medals (Kate Doucette 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle, Alex Hein 200-yard IM, Watschke 50-yard freestyle, Brownstead 100-yard freestyle).
Wrestling
Bald Eagle: Lucas Fye was second at 113, Coen Bainey finished second at 120, Caleb Close placed fourth at 172 and Noah Foltz went fourth at 189 at the PIAA Southwest 2A Regional. They will each go to states.
Bellefonte: Jude Swisher (145) won gold at the PIAA Northwest 3A Regional. His teammate, Aidan O’Shea (132) will join him at states, following his bronze medal finish.
Penns Valley: Penns Valley’s Ty Watson has claimed 38 victories and no losses on the season and went on to win gold in the PIAA Southwest 2A Regional. Jack Darlington (106) will join him at states, following his sixth place finish.
P-O: Philipsburg-Osceola had two seventh-place finishers and one eighth-place finisher at the PIAA Southwest 2A Regional.
State College: State College’s Asher Cunningham (120 pounds), Pierson Manville (138) and Nick Pavlechko (215) are all headed to states after their PIAA Northwest 3A Regional victories.
