HS Roundup: PIAA state swimming championships

The PIAA 3A and 2A state swimming championships took place March 16-19 with three Centre County teams competing.

Bellefonte and Penns Valley competed in the boys and girls 2A state meet, while State College’s girls and boys teams competed in the 3A meet.

Here are the results from the state swim meet:

Bellefonte: Bellefonte’s girls team finished 25th in the 2A state meet with 30 points. Kiaha McCool finished fourth with a time of 1:53.98 in the girls 200-yard freestyle on Friday. Kate Rarrick had a time of 5:24.19 in the 500-yard freestyle relay preliminaries on Saturday, finishing 17th. Bellefonte’s 4x400-yard freestyle team of McCool, Finley Musser, Kateyln Packer and Addie Pringle finished 13th (3:45.46) in Saturday’s preliminaries. McCool went on to win a bronze medal in the 100-yard backstroke finals (56.48) on Saturday. Bellefonte finished in 15th place in the 4x400-yard freestyle relay finals (3:46.04). Addie Pringle, Musser, Emma Pringle and Ashley Moretz competed in the event.

Carter Boone finished 23rd (1:49.64) in the boys 200-yard freestyle and 17th in the 100-yard butterfly (53.48) on Friday.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley’s girls team finished 45th with nine points. Maggie Delaney placed ninth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:04.48 on Saturday.

State College: Jade Castro won a silver medal in the 100-yard backstroke (54.33) in the 3A final on Thursday night. She also finished fourth in the 200-yard individual medley (2:03.21) on Wednesday. State College’s girls team finished 12th, scoring 67 points. Castro, Mackenzie Pagett, Ally Koehle and Madison Watschke finished fourth in the 200-yard medley finals with a time of 1:45.61. The girls 200-yard freestyle relay team of Watschke, Castro, Ditta Kowalik and Kelly Brownstead finished with a disqualification in the finals on Thursday.

The boys team placed 13th in the state with 57 points. They had a 10th place (1:36.59) finish in the 200-yard medley relay (Tyler Uhlig, John Brownstead, Shawn Erdley, and Sam Huggins). Huggins finished 15th (1:44.45) in the 200-yard freestyle. John Brownstead had an 11th place (21.36) finish in the 50-yard freestyle. He finished eighth in the boys 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.01. Sam Huggins placed 16th in the boys 500-yard freestyle with a time of 4:39.12. Shawn Erdley was sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.85) and the team of Huggins, Erik Witt, Uhlig and John Brownstead placed 10th (3:11.17) in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
