HS roundup: Here’s what happened from March 28-April 2 in Centre County high school sports

State tournaments are inching closer as district and regional events come to a close in Centre County. Two local boys basketball teams will take part in their respective state tournaments, while plenty of wrestlers and swimmers found success at regionals and districts in the past week.

Here are the highlights from the week that was in Centre County sports from March 28-April 2.

Baseball

Bald Eagle: Bald Eagle’s game against Philipsburg-Osceola on March 31 was postponed due to rain. The Eagles will take on Mount Union at home on Monday. BEA is 1-0 on the year.

Bellefonte: Dominic Capperella threw five innings, allowing zero hits and zero runs while striking out eight and walking zero in Bellefonte’s 12-0 victory over Huntingdon on March 30. The Red Raiders had 12 hits in the game with Trevor Johnson, Derek Fravel, Peyton Vancas and Alexander Ebeling picking up multiple hits. Bellefonte went on a tear in their April 1 matchup against Jersey Shore, winning 15-0. Fravel pitched five innings, allowing zero runs and just two hits, while striking out nine batters.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley was set to play Southern Huntingdon on April 1 at Peoples Natural Gas Field in Altoona., but the game was postponed due to inclement weather.

Philipsburg-Osceola: P-O was set to take on Bald Eagle on March 31, but the game was postponed due to rain. The Mounties will host Tyrone on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Saint Joe’s: The Wolfpack were set to play Bellwood-Antis on April 1, but the game was postponed due to inclement weather. Saint Joe’s is set to play Penns Valley on Monday at 4:30 in an away matchup. They are 0-1 on the year.

State College: The Little Lions dropped their first game 4-3 against Forest Hills on April 2. State College bounced back in their second April 2 game with a 6-1 victory over Juniata Valley.

Lacrosse

Bellefonte (boys): The Red Raiders were defeated by Lewisburg 13-5 on March 29. Bellefonte went on to defeat Mifflin County 7-2 on April 1, improving its record to 1-1. Bellefonte is set to travel to Selinsgrove for a 6:15 p.m. matchup on Tuesday.

Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte defeated Lewisburg 16-8 on March 29 and went on to notch a 13-7 victory over Mifflin County on April 1. The Lady Raiders are now 2-0 on the year.

State College (boys): State College lost to Cumberland Valley by a score of 13-7 on March 29. The Little Lions are now 1-1 on the year and are set for a Tuesday game against Central Dauphin on the road at 4:15 p.m.

State College (girls): The Lady Lions lost 12-8 on March 29 and followed up with a big victory in their next game. They defeated Mechanicsburg 17-1 on March 31. Maddie Rottkamp led the way with four goals and two assists, followed by Sydney O’Donnell’s three goals, one assist, seven draw controls and four ground balls. Leah Moyer also had three goals, two assists, three draw controls and four ground balls. Phebe Herlocher had two goals, three assists and one draw control, and Ella Tambroni had two goals and one assist. Caitlyn Keiter, Madeline Krentzman and Marina Dunlap each scored a goal. They are now 1-1 on the year.

Softball

Philipsburg-Osceola: The Lady Mounties lost 13-1 against DuBois on March 30. Their second game is against Tyrone on Monday.

All other softball games for the week of March 28-April 2 were postponed due to inclement weather.

Track and Field

Bellefonte (boys): Red Raiders distance runner Alexander Crist finished first with a time of 10:35.75 in the 3,200-meter on April 2 against Selinsgrove and Brookville.

Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte had multiple winners in their meet with Selinsgrove and Brookville. Red Raiders distance runner Emma Liadis won the girls 1,600-meter event (6:09.30), Ella Underwood won the shot put event with a throw of 28-08.50 and Gabrielle Deitrich (86-03.00) won the girls discus throw.

Philipsburg-Osceola (boys): P-O took on Huntingdon and Hollidaysburg on March 29. Chad Muckey’s 3,200-meter run set P-O’s school record with a time of 10:18.38. Hollidaysburg finished with a 112 score against P-O’s 38, and Huntingdon scored 101 to P-O’s 48.

Philipsburg-Osceola (girls): The Lady Mounties also competed against Huntingdon and Hollidaysburg on March 29, going 1-1 in the meet. Hollidaysburg scored 114 points and P-O scored 36. P-O won against Huntingdon by a score of 79-71.

State College (boys): Sean Adams won the boys 800-meter race with a time of 1:58.22 and was trailed by teammates Matthew Saniar (2:00.02) and Trent Dinant (2:00.06) in second and third at the 45th annual Altoona Area Igloo Invitational on April 2. Dinant won the 1,600-meter with a time of 4:25.23 and teammate Charles Endres (4:37.75) finished second. Endres won the 3,200-meter race (9:53.50) and Tony Tzolov (10:01.29) placed third. Ryan Lindenberg won the 300-meter hurdle (40.60). State College won the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:29.22. Ian Dorefice won the pole vault with a 14-03.00 jump.

State College (girls): Chloe Poindexter won the girls 400-meter dash (1:01.58). Marlee Kwasnica finished in first place with a time of 11:37.08 in the 3,200-meter run and was trailed by Amy Devan (11:41.28) in second. Sarah Tate (17.20) placed first in the 100-meter hurdles. Shannon Mullin won the long jump, reaching a distance of 18-11.75 and followed up with a 38-00.75 distance for her second first-place finish in the triple jump. Mia Iceland had a 10-00.00 jump in the pole vault for first place.
