HS roundup: Here’s what happened from April 4-9 in Centre County high school sports

It was an extremely busy week in Centre County high school sports. Baseball, lacrosse, softball, tennis and track and field all took place between the local schools. One Bellefonte girls lacrosse player had a special day on April 5, Saint Joseph’s and Penns Valley came to a standstill in their baseball game on April 4. State College tennis was dominant. A Bald Eagle boys jumper had a literal field day in the meet against Clearfield and Bellefonte on April 7.

Here are the highlights from the week that was in Centre County sports from April 4-9.

Baseball

Bald Eagle: The Eagles dropped their April 4 matchup with Mount Union 4-3. Hayden Vaughn went 3-for-4 at the plate. Bald Eagle lost to Clearfield 4-2 on April 5. Ethan Koleno had a 2-for-3 day in the defeat. Things got back on track for the Eagles when they jumped into the win column on April 8 with a 10-4 victory over Penns Valley. McGwire Heverly and Kahale Burns each went 2-for-4 from the dish.

Bellefonte: The Red Raiders defeated DuBois 10-4 on April 4. Dominic Capperella was the winning pitcher for Bellefonte. The lefty went three innings, allowing three runs on one hit and striking out three. Triston Heckman and Peyton Vancas each had multi-hit games, with Heckman leading the Red Raiders by going 3-for-4 from the plate.

Bellefonte defeated Penns Valley 6-3 on April 5, with right-handed pitcher Derek Fravel taking home the win. He allowed just two hits and two runs over five innings, while striking out 10. Braedyn Kormanic and Capperella had two hits each in the victory.

Capperella took home another win on April 8 against Hollidaysburg. He went four innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out nine batters in the 5-3 win. Alexander Ebeling and Fravel both had two hits to lead the Red Raiders.

Penns Valley: The Rams were knotted at 10-10 against Saint Joseph’s prior to the game being suspended on April 4. On April 5, Penns Valley lost 6-3 against Bellefonte. The Rams totaled four hits in defeat with Miles Brooks going 1-for-3 from the plate with one run driven in. Though Penns Valley lost 10-4 to Bald Eagle on April 8, Jon Meyer had a strong day at the plate. He went 3-for-3 and scored a run. Penns Valley is now 0-2-1 on the season.

Philipsburg-Osceola: Colby Hahn tossed a complete game shutout to lead the Mounties to a 10-0 victory on April 5 against Tyrone. He allowed no runs on two hits over five innings, struck out four and had no walks. Nick Coudriet and Parker White both had three hits in the win. P-O’s games against Huntingdon on April 8 and their doubleheader with Linsly on April 9 were postponed. The Mounties are now 2-0 on the season.

Saint Joe’s: Saint Joe’s had 10 hits in their 10-10 tie with Penns Valley on April 5. Chris Forstmeier led the team in hits, going 3-for-5. Thomas Delahoy and Spencer Gigante both had multi-hit games, going 2-for-3. The Wolfpack won 13-7 over DuBois on April 9. Delahoy went 4-for-5 at the plate with two runs batted in. Evan Roach drove in four runs. The Wolfpack are now 1-1-1 on the year.

State College: Cooper Ryan pitched on April 5, tossing six innings while only allowing one hit and striking out eight in a 7-0 victory over Red Land. State College is now 2-2 on the season.

Lacrosse

Bellefonte (boys): The Red Raiders lost 15-4 on the road against Selinsgrove on April 5. They also lost 19-5 on April 7 in a road game against Indiana. Bellefonte sits at 1-3 overall this year.

Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte defeated Selinsgrove 18-11 on April 5. Molly McKee scored her 100th career goal in the victory. The Lady Raiders lost 17-8 on April 8 to Indiana. They are 3-1 on the year.

State College (boys): The Little Lions defeated Central Dauphin East 18-2 on April 5 and followed up with an 8-2 victory over Hershey on April 7. They are now 3-1 on the season.

State College (girls): State College defeated Central Dauphin East 19-0 on April 5. Leah Moyer had four goals and Ella Tambroni had three goals. Sydney O’Donnell, Maddie Rottkamp, Phebe Herlocher and Caitlyn Keiter each had two goals. Morgan Powers, Casidy Cohagan, Madeline Krentzman and Annika Bechtel each had a goal.

State College defeated Hershey 11-8 on April 7. O’Donnell, Herlocher and Moyer each had three goals. Caitlyn Keiter and Katie Fry each had one goal. Grace Jones had seven saves.

State College lost to Strath Haven 18-10 on April 9. O’Donnell had four goals, one assist and four draw controls and Moyer had four goals and two draw controls in the loss.

They are now 3-2 on the season.

Softball

Bald Eagle: The Lady Eagles lost 5-1 against Clearfield on April 4. Bald Eagle defeated Bellefonte 5-2 on April 5. Autumn Tobias went 1-for-1 with a home run and one run batted in, along with two walks and three runs scored. Marina Shawley went 1-for-2, Katelyn Smitchko went 1-for-1 with a run scored, Kierra Serb went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Taylor Habovic went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Bald Eagle is now 1-1 on the year.

Bellefonte: Bellefonte opened its season with an 11-1 victory over Penns Valley on April 4. Josselyn Nau pitched five innings, striking out six batters, allowing just one run on two hits. Catcher Grace Novitsky went 2-for-2 with a double, a single, a walk and drove in one run.

The Lady Raiders lost 5-2 against the Lady Eagles on April 5. Madison Melius went 1-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and a run scored, and Tori Reichert, Sienna Barnhart and Taylor Brown each had a 1-for-3 day from the dish.

Bellefonte went on to defeat Hollidaysburg 11-4 on April 7 with Carley Clarkson taking the win. She pitched five innings, allowing five hits and three runs, while walking three batters and striking out four. Barnhart went 2-for-3 with a home run, batting in two runs and scoring three. Novitsky had a 2-for-4 day with two runs batted in. Taylor Brown went 2-for-4 with a double. Bellefonte is now 2-1 on the year.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley lost to Bellefonte 11-1 on April 4. The Lady Rams bounced back with a 6-3 victory over Mifflinburg on April 8. They are now 1-1 on the season.

Philipsburg-Osceola: The Lady Mounties had 12 hits in their 12-11 loss to Tyrone on April 4. MyKenna Bryan, Jocelyn Williams, Paige Jarrett and Karissa Taylor each had multiple hits. Bryan led going 3-for-3.

Philipsburg-Osceola scored six runs on a home run by Jarrett in the third, a double by Camryn Chverchko in the fourth, a error in the fourth, a double by Abby Vaux in the fourth and a error in the fourth, but eventually lost 10-9 to Chestnut Ridge on April 5.

The Lady Mounties are now 0-2 on the season.

State College: Zia Bodnar turned allowed four hits and struck out four as State College defeated Red Land 5-0 April 5. Madysen Burkey led the Little Lions with three hits. Jess Hawbaker and Meredith Meengs both added two hits of their own. They are now 1-0 on the year. State College softball’s Kylie Ehrensberger won the SkillsUSA Pennsylvania Early Childhood Education contest on April 8.

Tennis

State College (boys): Mark Sandow defeated Hershey’s Saahil Muthur 6-0, 6-0 in April 5’s dual match. State College’s Daniel Xu beat Faizaan Aziz 6-1, 6-4 – each of the matches being in singles play.

In doubles, Luke Shaha and David Chang (State College) defeated Charles Horner and Monty Hanford 6-3, 6-3. Issac Dye and Jerry Zhang defeated Matthew Carrera and Nick Moniak 6-1, 6-4. Peter Novikov and Zac Mroz defeated Issac Mikanatha and Aarav Tripathi 8-4. Zi Zhang and Nat Hickner defeated Will Olszewski and Stephen Wingert 8-4.

The Little Lions took home a 4-1 victory to improve to 7-1 on the season.

Track and Field

Bald Eagle (boys): Owen Irvin won the high jump (5-04.00), the long jump (19-04.00) and the triple jump (39-03.00) in the meet against Clearfield and Bellefonte on April 7. Kevin Taylor (11-06.00) won the pole vault and Kaleb Matis won the javelin throw (132-10.00).

Bald Eagle (girls): Heather Leskovansky won the pole vault (7-06.00), Abigial Hoover won the girls discus (82-09.00) and the girls javelin (104-02.00), and Emilie Grant won the shot put (28-03.00). on April 7.

Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte defeated Huntingdon 91-59, but narrowly lost to Penns Valley 76-74 in the meet at Penns Valley on April 5. Chase Ebeling won the 3,200-meter race with a time of 10:35.50. Jacob Showers won the 110-meter hurdle race with a time of 18 seconds. William Spratt won the shot put throw with a toss of 43.5 feet, followed by a victory in the discus with a throw of 119-8.

The boys went on to defeat Bald Eagle Area 94-56 and Clearfield 110-40 on April 7 at Clearfield. Eric Bennett won the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.33. Alex Mansfield won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15.57. Chase Ebeling took home a victory in the 1,600-meter run (4:53.90). Alexander Crist won the 3,200-meter run (10:39.12). Bellefonte won the 4x100-meter relay (46.86), the 4x400-meter relay (3:47.47) and the 4x800-meter relay (10:20.44).

Bellefonte (girls): The Lady Raiders defeated both Penns Valley (93-53) and Huntingdon (81-68) in a meet April 5. Kerri Shutika won the 100-meter (13.40) and 200-meter dash (28.40). Shutika also won the 100-meter hurdle (19.00). Ruthann Smoyer (57.90) took home a victory in the 300-meter hurdle. Gabrielle Deitrich won the girls discus toss with a throw of 81-3.

Bellefonte lost to Bald Eagle 75-73 and 77-73 against Clearfield on April 7. Shutika won the 200-meter dash (28.50), Emma Liadis won the 1,600-meter run (6:14.50) and Kate Rarrick took home a victory in the 3,200-meter run (14:24.71). Bellefonte won the 4x100-meter relay (55.43) and the 4x800-meter relay (12:06.59). Josie Underwood was the victor in the long jump with a jump of 30-04.75.

Penns Valley (boys): Micah Good won the 400-meter hurdle (54.70). Zach Braucht took home the victory in both the high jump (6-2) and the long jump (19-9). Colin Niewinski won the javelin throw (152-11). Penns Valley defeated Bellefonte 76-74 and Huntingdon 78-72 on April 5.

Penns Valley (girls): Abigail Stitzer won the 800-meter race with a time of 2:41.10 in their meet with Bellefonte and Huntingdon on April 5. Alexis Durn (6:07.30) won the 1,600-meter race. Cammie Upcraft won the high jump with a height of 5 feet. Penns Valley lost 93-53 against Bellefonte and 87-57 against Huntingdon.

Philipsburg-Osceola (boys): Philipsburg-Osceola lost to Tyrone 102-47 and Clearfield 91-55 on April 5. Chad Muckey won the 1,600-meter race (4:50.64) and the 3,200-meter race (10:06.69), Braydon Little won the 400-meter dash (54.04), Matthew Reese won the pole vault (10-6) and Josiah Kephart won the discus throw (104-7).

Philipsburg-Osceola (girls): The Lady Mounties defeated Clearfield 87-63 and lost to Tyrone 84-65 on April 5. Philipsburg-Osceola won the 4x800-meter relay (11:46.51) and the 4x100-meter relay (56.46). Jaylee Cook was the victor in the 1,600-meter race (6:14.39), Kylie Timko took home the win in the 3,200-meter (14:42.75), Kalista Butler won the pole vault (7-0) and the javelin throw (97-4), Reilly Vroman won the shot put with a toss of 32-1 and Olivia Hutton won the discus throw with a toss of 79-1.
