HS roundup: Here’s what happened from April 11-16 in Centre County high school sports
Another week of Centre County high school athletics is in the books.
Bellefonte baseball is off to a blistering start with three consecutive victories last week, improving to 8-1. State College softball had a strong week of their own by winning four games. The Lady Little Lions lacrosse team outscored opponents 38-11 last week. One member of the Bald Eagle girls track and field team had a week to remember.
Here are the highlights from the week that was in Centre County sports from April 11-16.
Baseball
Bald Eagle: The Eagles took down Tyrone by a score of 9-5 on April 11. Cam Watkins, Alex Gavlock, McGwire Heverly and Parker Quick each had two-hit games. Watkins had a four-RBI day with a home run and a double. Heverly pitched 6.2 innings, allowed five runs on six hits and struck out five batters. He received the win.
The Eagles dropped their April 12 matchup with Bellefonte 7-3. Ryan Kresovich went 2-for-2 from the plate with Bald Eagle tallying six hits in the game.
Bald Eagle defeated Hollidaysburg 2-1 in eight innings on April 14. Heverly had two hits and drove in a run and Kahale Burns went 1-for-3 with an RBI in the contest. Carson Nagle pitched two innings, allowing one hit and a run, and walked one batter, while striking out three. Wyatt Coakley pitched six innings, allowing three hits, no runs and five walks, and striking out four. The Eagles are 4-4 on the year.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte defeated Philipsburg-Osceola 3-2 on April 11. Peyton Vancas went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Derek Fravel pitched to a win in 6.1 innings of work, allowing three hits, two runs and five walks, and striking out six.
The Red Raiders took down Bald Eagle 7-3 on April 12. Alexander Ebeling and Kenny Squires each had three hits on the day with Squires driving in three runs. Dominic Capperella pitched six innings, allowing five hits, three runs and three walks, while striking out four.
Bellefonte continued their hot start to the season with a 12-5 victory over Clearfield on April 14. The Red Raiders had five batters with multi-hit games with Ebeling leading the way, going 3-for-4 from the plate and Triston Heckman driving in a game-high four runs. Vancas pitched 5.2 innings, allowing three earned runs (four total) on six hits, two walks and five strikeouts. Bellefonte is 8-1.
Penns Valley: The Rams took on Hollidaysburg on April 11, resulting in a 11-4 loss. Penns Valley lost to Southern Huntingdon 4-2 on April 13. The Rams dropped a 16-11 contest against the Mounties on April 14. Penns Valley is 0-5-1 on the season.
Philipsburg-Osceola: The Mounties lost 3-2 to Bellefonte on April 11. Parker White went 1-for-4 with two RBI on the day. Dave Meersand pitched 6.2 innings, allowing five hits and three runs, walking three batters and striking out two.
Philipsburg-Osceola defeated Penns Valley in a 16-11 shootout on April 14. The Mounties tallied 11 hits with Colby Hahn driving in four runs and are 3-2 on the season.
Saint Joe’s: Thomas Delahoy scored in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Wolfpack a 3-2 win over Northern Cambria on April 13. Evan Roach had 10 strikeouts in four innings.
The Wolfpack beat Sugar Valley 18-0 on April 14 in a combined no-hitter by Jason Dreibelbis and Anthony Fisher. Spencer Gigante and Roach each had three hits on the day. Saint Joe’s is 3-2-1 on the season.
State College: The Little Lions gained a 10-5 victory over Mifflin County on April 11. Cooper Ryan, Charlie Bakken and Ethan Schimony each had two hits with Schimony driving in three runs.
State College was edged out 4-3 by Cumberland Valley on April 12. Bakken went 2-for-3 on the day. Brady Bendik pitched 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on three hits, walking two batters and striking out seven.
The Little Lions took home a 9-7 victory against Altoona in eight innings on April 14. Evan Summerson, Ryan and Bakken each picked up two hits. Bakken, TJ Yoder and Adam Cooper drove in two runs each. State College is 4-3 on the season.
Lacrosse
Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte boys lacrosse defeated Mifflinburg 15-2 on April 11 to improve to 2-3 on the season.
Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte defeated Midd West 15-3 on April 14. Molly McKee had six goals and one assist with Elle Macafee tallying five goals and five assists. Taylor Henry had two goals, while Makenna Lake and Lexi Badger had one goal each. Kaylee Frantz had four saves. The Lady Raiders improved to 5-1 on the season.
State College (boys): The Little Lions defeated Trinity 16-5 on April 12 and followed up with a 16-7 victory over Chambersburg on April 14. Branden Price had three goals against Trinity and Cooper Brushwood added two. Price tallied eight goals and Brushwood had three in the win over Chambersburg. State College now holds a 4-2 record.
State College (girls): The Lady Little Lions picked up a 20-9 win over Trinity on April 12. Leah Moyer had a game-high six goals, one assist and five draw controls. Sydney O’Donnell had five goals, three assists and two draw controls. Maddie Rottkamp and Phebe Herlocher each had three goals.
State College followed up with a 18-2 victory over Chambersburg on April 14. O’Donnell led the way with four goals and three draw controls. Moyer, Rottkamp and Ella Tambroni each had two goals. State College holds a 4-2 record.
Softball
Bald Eagle: The Lady Eagles lost 9-8 in a close matchup with Central on April 11. Bald Eagle gained a 7-3 victory over Hollidaysburg on April 14 to improve to 2-2 on the year.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte lost to Clearfield 4-3 on April 12. Taylor Brown went 2-for-2 from the plate with one home run, an RBI and two runs scored. Josselyn Nau had a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a double and two RBIs and Emma Shawley went 1-for-3.
The Lady Raiders lost to Philipsburg-Osceola 5-4 on April 14. Nau pitched 6.1 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out one batter. Nau took the loss for Bellefonte.
Bellefonte is now 2-2 on the season.
Penns Valley: The Lady Rams defeated Philipsburg-Osceola 10-5 on April 12. Scotty Dinges, Kailen Winkelblech and Avelyn Van Heyst all had multiple hits for Penns Valley. Dinges went 3-for-5 at the plate.
Clara Brooks had a hit with the bases loaded, driving in Van Heyst to gain a 10-0 victory over Juniata on April 14. Van Heyst drilled a home run to begin the game. Taylor Bumgardner pitched six innings to shut out Juniata. Penns Valley is now 3-1 on the season.
Philipsburg-Osceola: Philipsburg-Osceola lost 10-5 against Penns Valley on April 12. Alivia Bizzarri pitched seven innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs while striking out 10 in the loss.
The Lady Mounties defeated Bellefonte 5-4 on April 14 with MyKenna Bryan’s walk-off hit. Bizzarri took the win for Philipsburg-Osceola. Bizzarri pitched seven innings, allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out five and walking one. Paige Jarrett went 2-for-4 on the day. Philipsburg-Osceola is now 1-4 on the year.
State College: State College had a 4-0 week. The Lady Little Lions began their week with a 13-0 victory over Central Dauphin on April 11, following up with a 2-0 win over Cumberland Valley on April 12, a 5-2 triumph against Central Mountain on April 13 and a 16-0 win over rival Altoona with Zia Bodnar hitting a home run.
Tennis
State College (boys): The Little Lions lost to Palmyra 3-2 on April 12. Daniel Xu defeated Aidan Mark 2-1 in singles play. State College bounced back with a 4-1 victory over Lower Dauphin on April 13. Xu and Mark Sandow won their singles matches 2-0. Luke Shaha and Peter Norikov, along with Arda Wuyts and Jerry Zhang, won their doubles matches 2-0 in sets. Zemu Zhang and Nat Hickner won their lone set 8-1. State College is now 8-2 on the season.
Track and Field
Bald Eagle (girls): Abby Hoover had three first-place finishes against Huntingdon, Tyrone and Central Mountain on April 12 and April 14. She had a javelin throw of 115’6”, a discus throw of 90’4’‘ and won the shot put event with a toss of 30’4”.
Bellefonte (boys): The Red Raiders defeated Philipsburg-Osceola 124-26 on April 12. Bellefonte now holds a 4-1 record in the Mountain League (overall 4-3).
Bellefonte (girls): The Lady Raiders defeated P-O 77-73 on April 12, improving to 3-2 in the Mountain League and 4-3 overall.
Philipsburg-Osceola (boys): The Mounties fell to Bellefonte 124-26 on April 12. Philipsburg-Osceola bounced back with victories over Saint Joe’s (92-41) and West Branch (74-74 tiebreaker of first-place finishes). The Mounties are now 2-5.
Philipsburg-Osceola (girls): Philipsburg-Osceola lost 77-73 to Bellefonte on April 12. Philipsburg-Osceola won the girls 4x800-meter relay with a time of 11:22.46 (Kylie Timko, Audrey Smith, Lily Warlow and Jaylee Cook). Starcia Bainey won the 100-meter hurdles (18.28), Cook won the 1,600-meter run (6:07.92), Reilly Vroman won the shot put with a toss of 32-08.00, and Kalista Butler took home a victory in the javelin throw (115-06) and the pole vault (7-09.00).
Philipsburg-Osceola won their meet against Saint Joe’s and West Branch on April 14 to improve to 4-3.
Saint Joe’s (boys): Taylor James won the boys 100-meter run with a time of 12.32 and the 200-meter dash (24:33) while Colin Simander took home a victory in the 1,600-meter run (4:47.61) and the 800-meter run (2:10.14). Akio Ohomoto-Federic won the boys 300-meter hurdles (46.02). Saint Joe’s won the 4x400 relay (3:50.73).
Saint Joe’s (girls): Abby Ridenour went first in the 3,200-meter race, finishing in 14:07.99.
