HS roundup: Here’s what happened from April 18-23 in Centre County high school sports

Philipsburg-Osceola and Penns Valley both picked up two wins against Clearfield and Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy in back-to-back baseball games. State College boys lacrosse had a large comeback victory on April 22. Bellefonte softball notched three consecutive victories on the week. State College boys tennis now holds an 11-2 record, following their back-to-back victories.

Here are the highlights from the week that was in Centre County sports from April 18-23.

Baseball

Bald Eagle: The Eagles dismantled Huntingdon by a score of 12-2 on April 19. Five players had multi-hit performances and Tyler Serb led the way by going 3-for-3 from the plate with two runs batted in. McGwire Heverly went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Heverly pitched six innings, allowing five hits and two runs, while walking four batters and striking out 11.

Bald Eagle lost 7-1 to Bellefonte on April 22. Hayden Vaughn went 2-for-3 from the plate with the team’s lone RBI. Logan Lehman, Mikey Snyder and Wyatt Coakley pitched a combined six innings, allowing six hits, seven runs and six walks while striking out two batters.

The Eagles bounced back with a 15-7 victory over Southern Huntingdon on April 23. Bald Eagle totaled 20 hits in the game with seven different batters with multi-hit performances. Heverly went 4-for-5, driving in two runs. Kahale Burns and Cam Watkins each went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs each. Serb pitched six innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs, while walking two and striking out three. Carson Nagle pitched an inning, allowing one hit and no runs and striking out one batter. The Eagles are now 6-5 this season.

Bellefonte: The Red Raiders defeated Bald Eagle 7-1 on April 22. Triston Heckman went 2-for-3 from the plate and Braedyn Kormanic had a 2-for-4 day with three RBI. Peyton Vancas went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Derek Fravel pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and one run, while walking three batters and striking out eight. Bellefonte is now 9-1 on the year.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley picked up two wins over Saint Joe’s on April 20 — first finishing off a postponed game that began on April 4 with an 11-10 victory and winning a full game 4-0. Rams pitcher McClain Welshans pitched all seven innings in game two, allowing one hit and no runs while striking out eight batters. Malachi Thompson went 2-for-3 from the plate with three RBI. Penns Valley is now 2-5 on the year.

Philipsburg-Osceola: The Mounties notched two back-to-back victories against Clearfield on April 20 and April 22.

They had a 6-4 victory over Clearfield on April 20. Dave Meersand pitched six innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out five. Nick Coudriet followed up in relief with an inning pitched. Brandon Hahn and Jeremy Whitehead both had multi-hit performances for the Mounties. Hahn led the Mounties by going 3-for-3 from the plate.

Philipsburg-Osceola defeated the Bison 7-6 on April 22. Colby Hahn pitched five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out five and walking one. Denny Prestash pitched two innings in relief out of the bullpen. Coudriet, Hahn, Jamey Massung and Parker Scaife each picked up a hit.

Saint Joe’s: Saint Joe’s lost 11-10 in the first game against Penns Valley and lost 4-0 on April 20 in the second game. Evan Roach was Saint Joe’s starting pitcher, going three innings, allowing one hit and one run while striking out eight and walking one. Jason Dreibelbis went the rest of the way, pitching four innings out of the bullpen, allowing three runs on four hits, while walking one and striking out two batters. Dreibelbis also went 1-for-2 from the plate with the Wolfpack’s lone hit.

State College: The Little Lions lost 9-0 to Cedar Cliff on April 20. Evan Summerson led the way in hits by going 2-for-3 from the plate. Brady Bendik, Jack Messina and Sam Janik combined for six innings pitched, allowing nine hits, nine runs and eight walks while striking out six batters. The Little Lions lost 4-3 against Central Dauphin on April 21. State College is now 4-5 on the year.

Lacrosse

Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte beat Mifflinburg 13-7 on April 21. Logan Williams scored three goals in the game.

The Red Raiders defeated Mifflin County 9-8 on April 22. Shea Chapman led the game with five goals. Bellefonte is now 3-3 on the season.

Bellefonte (girls): The Lady Raiders improved to 6-1 on the season with a 22-4 victory over Mifflinburg on April 20.

State College (boys): The Little Lions defeated Crestwood 8-7 on April 22. State College came back from a 6-3 deficit to win in double overtime. Leo Vandevort had three goals, including the game-winning score. Ty Salazer had two goals and one assists. Cooper Brushwood, Ryan Hawbaker and Branden Price each had a goal. Zack Paterno had 11 saves.

The Little Lions now sit at 5-2 on the season.

State College (girls): The Lady Little Lions defeated Selinsgrove 21-3 on April 23. Maddie Rottkamp led the way with four goals and three assists. Sydney O’Donnell had three goals, three assists and four draw controls. Ella Tambroni had three goals and one assist. Leah Moyer, Caitlyn Keiter and Katie Fry had two goals each. Phebe Herlocher, Emma Lally, Mia Reese, Morgan Powers and Annie LaMotta each had one goal. Grace Jones had one save. State College now holds a 5-2 record.

Softball

Bald Eagle: Bald Eagle’s games against Huntingdon (April 18), Punxsutawney (April 19) and Bellefonte (April 22) were postponed. The Lady Eagles are 3-2 on the year.

Bellefonte: The Lady Raiders defeated Montoursville 6-5 on April 22. Madison Melius, Sienna Barnhart and Josselyn Nau each went 2-for-3 from the plate. Nau pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits, five runs (two earned) and one walk while striking out five. Bellefonte went on to defeat Williamsport 6-3 and Loyalsock 14-2, winning the Williamsport Tournament. Bellefonte is 5-3.

Penns Valley: The Lady Rams lost 10-3 against Hollidaysburg on April 22. Penns Valley is now 1-2 on the season.

Philipsburg-Osceola: Philipsburg-Osceola lost 8-0 to Clearfield on April 21. The Lady Mounties totaled six hits. London Cutler and Alivia Bizzarri each racked up multiple hits for Philipsburg-Osceola. Cutler went 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Lady Mounties in hits. Bizzarri pitched one and one-third innings, allowing four hits and eight runs while striking out two. The Lady Mounties are now 1-5 on the season.

State College: The Lady Little Lions won 10-0 against Cedar Cliff on April 20 to improve to 5-0 on the year.

Tennis

State College: The Little Lions went 2-1 in singles play against Carlisle on April 18 with Mark Sandow (6-2, 6-2) and Daniel Xu (7-5, 6-4) taking their sets. David Chong and Lucas Shaha (6-2, 6-2), Issac Dye and Jerry Zhang (6-4, 6-0), Peter Novikov and Nat Hickner (6-2) and Ishan Sharma and Andrew Field (6-1) won their doubles sets.

State College went on to defeat Red Land 5-0 on April 22. Matt Labosky (6-1, 6-2), Sandow (6-0, 6-1) and Xu (6-1, 6-1) swept singles play, while Shaha and Chong (6-0, 6-1) and Novikov and Zemu Zhang (6-0, 6-1) took victories in doubles play. State College is now 11-2 on the season.

Track and Field

Bald Eagle (boys): Bald Eagle’s meet with Penns Valley and Philipsburg-Osceola was postponed on April 19, due to inclement weather. Owen Irvin (22-2.5) won the boys long jump in the Slippery Rock University high school invitational on April 23.

Bald Eagle (girls): Bald Eagle’s meet with Penns Valley and Philipsburg-Osceola was postponed on April 19, due to inclement weather. Sybil Thompson had the highest final placement of all Bald Eagle girls track and field team members with a fourth-place finish in the 2,000-meter steeplechase (9:17.66) on April 23.

Bellefonte (boys): The Red Raiders lost to Hollidaysburg 83-67 and defeated Tyrone 76-74. Alex Crist won the 1,600-meter race (4:47.9), Chase Ebeling finished first in the 3,200-meter race (10:35.9) and Will Spratt won the shot put throw with a distance of 41’10.5”.

Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte lost to Hollidaysburg (104-46) and defeated Tyrone (83-66) in their meet on April 20. Haley Herr won the 3,200-meter run (14:26.4), Gabby Deitrich won the girls discus toss (91’4”) and Ella Underwood won the javelin throw (86’4”).

State College (boys): State College took on Chambersburg, winning 10 events on April 20. Ryan Lindenberg won the 100-meter dash (11.16), while Sean Adams took the wins in the 200-meter dash (22.93) and the 400-meter dash (50.08). Trent Dinant won the 800-meter run (1:59.73) and Nick Sloff placed first in the 1,600-meter race (4:30.01). The boys 4x400-meter relay (3:28.32) and the 4x800-meter relay (8:48.78) teams won their races. Ian Dorefice placed first in the pole vault with a jump of 14-6, Mitchell Maher won the discus throw (145-10) and Ben Spencer won the shot put (45-7).

State College (girls): State College had a successful meet against Chambersburg, winning seven events on April 20. Abigail Bigger won the 400-meter dash (1:05.96), Grace Morningstar won the 1,600-meter run (2:21.05), Marlee Kwasnica finished first in the 3,200-meter race (11:27.44) and Sarah Tate won the 100-meter hurdle (17.22). The 4x400-meter relay team won the race with a time of 4:23.58. Shannon Mullin won the long jump (17-9) and Mia Iceland won the pole vault (9-6).
