Centre County high school sports are inching closer to the postseason and another week of play is in the books.
Bald Eagle and Philipsburg-Osceola baseball played a thriller, finishing 3-2 with the Mounties reigning victorious on April 28. State College boys lacrosse had a three-win week to improve to 8-2 overall. Bellefonte softball outscored opponents 49-6.
Below are highlights from the week of April 25-30 in Centre County sports.
Baseball
Bald Eagle: Bald Eagle defeated Clearfield 6-0 on April 25. Ethan Koleno went 2-for-3 and had two runs batted in. McGwire Heverly tossed a no-hitter with seven innings pitched, five walks and 13 strikeouts.
The Eagles defeated DuBois 7-0 on April 26. Hayden Vaughn and Heverly each had two hits. Justin Bisel and Cam Watkins both drove in two runs. Carson Nagle pitched seven innings, allowing three hits, four walks and struck out three batters while allowing zero runs.
The Eagles held tight against Philipsburg-Osceola on April 28, but were defeated 3-2. Bald Eagle’s Koleno led with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Alex Gavlock drove in one run and went 1-for-3. Wyatt Coakley pitched 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs, while walking two batters and striking out two. The Eagles are now 8-6 on the year.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte defeated Penns Valley 7-6 on April 26, with Alexander Ebeling taking the win for Bellefonte. Ebeling went two innings, allowing one run on one hit and walking zero. Trevor Johnson threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Dominic Capperella started the game for the Red Raiders allowing five runs on six hits over five innings. Derek Fravel went 4-for-5 from the plate to lead the team in hits.
The Red Raiders defeated Huntingdon 13-2 on April 28, with Fravel earning the win for Bellefonte. Fravel went three innings, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out five. Ebeling threw three innings in relief out of the bullpen. Triston Heckman went 3-for-4 from the plate with five RBI.
Peyton Vancas pitched a shutout to push Bellefonte past St. Marys 8-0 on April 30. Vancas went seven innings, allowing seven hits and zero runs while striking out eight and walking zero. Heckman led the Red Raiders to victory by driving in five runs. He went 2-for-3 at the plate. Heckman drove in runs on a double in the first, a single in the second and a in the sixth. Bellefonte is now 12-1.
Penns Valley: Penns Valley took a 7-6 loss to Bellefonte on April 25 with Miles Brooks leading the way in hits by going 3-for-4 from the plate and one RBI. Jon Meyer drove in two runs and went 1-for-4.
The Rams were defeated by Tyrone 12-2 on April 27 and 5-2 against Penns Valley on April 29. Penns Valley is now 4-8 on the year.
Philipsburg-Osceola: The Mounties took a 6-2 victory over Tyrone on April 25. Colby Hahn and Ben Gustkey both notched two hits in the victory. Hahn had two RBI. Dave Meersand pitched seven innings, allowing seven hits, two runs (one earned), no walks and three strikeouts.
P-O was narrowly edged out in a 11-10 loss to DuBois Central Catholic on April 27. Hahn led the way with a 4-for-5 day from the plate and four runs batted in. Meersand drove in two runs while going 1-for-4 from the plate.

P-O knocked off Bald Eagle in walk-off fashion with a 3-2 win on April 28. Hahn had the game-winning double in the seventh inning. Jeremy Whitehead had the game-tying home run in the seventh. Hahn pitched six innings, allowing four hits, two runs (one earned) on two walks and struck out five. Parker White earned the victory, pitching one inning in relief, allowing no hits while walking one and striking out two.
The Mounties split their week with a 10-6 loss against State College on April 30. Jacob DeSimone went 2-for-3 and had three runs batted in. P-O is 7-4 on the season.
Saint Joe’s: Saint Joe’s lost the lead late in a 5-4 loss to East Juniata on April 28. Luke Duckworth pitched seven innings, allowing four runs on one hit and striking out eight. Nick Warner threw one and one-third innings out of the bullpen.
The Wolfpack took the lead late in the game in a 4-2 victory over West Branch on Friday. Jason Dreibelbis and Evan Roach each collected multiple hits for Saint Joe’s. Saint Joe’s is now 4-5 on the year.
State College: State College lost 4-2 against Mifflin County on April 26 with Cooper Ryan, Jack Messina and Evan Summerson going 2-for-4 from the plate. Brady Bendik pitched five innings, allowing three hits, two runs (none earned), two walks and struck out eight batters.
Red Land defeated the Little Lions 10-3 on April 28. State College picked up six hits in the game.
The Little Lions defeated Centre County foe Philipsburg-Osceola 10-6 on April 30. Ethan Schimony went 3-for-4 from the plate with an RBI. Ryan had a 2-for-3 day and drove in two runs. State College is now 5-7 on the year.
Lacrosse
Bellefonte (boys): The Lady Raiders lost 23-3 against Danville on April 26. Bellefonte now holds a 3-2 record.
Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte lost 14-7 to Danville on April 26. The Red Raiders are now 4-4 on the year.
State College (boys): State College defeated Central Dauphin 13-7 on April 26 and was led by Branden Price (five goals) and Ryan Hawbaker (four goals). Zach Paterno had 12 saves.
The Little Lions had a 15-1 victory over Northern York on April 27 with a 4-goal game by Price. Tennison Banks added three goals. State College had seven different goal-scorers. Paterno had four saves and Jack LaMotta had one.
State College defeated Red Land 11-4 on April 28. Price and Cooper Brushwood led with three goals. Paterno had 14 saves. The Little Lions are 8-2 on the year.
State College (girls): State College defeated Central Dauphin 21-2 on April 26. The score at halftime was 13-1. The Lady Little Lions lost 17-4 against Red Land on April 28. Sydney O’Donnell had three goals and one draw control. The Lady Little Lions are now 7-3 on the season.
Softball
Bald Eagle: Bald Eagle defeated Philipsburg-Osceola 10-3 on April 26. The Eagles totaled 12 hits during the game with Kailey Eckert, Katelyn Smitchko, Ava Stere and Autumn Tobias all collected multiple hits for Bald Eagle. The Eagles took a 6-5 loss to Clearfield on April 28.
Bellefonte: Bellefonte defeated Huntingdon 10-0 with Josselyn Nau pitching a one-hit, 7-strikeout performance in six innings. Madison Melius went 3-for-3 at the plate — SiennaBarnhart and Madison Ripka drove in two runs each.
The Lady Raiders took an even shorter time to defeat Huntingdon on April 27, winning 16-0. Carley Clarkson pitched four innings, allowing just one hit, one walk and struck out seven batters.
The Lady Raiders defeated Penns Valley 23-6 on April 30. Taylor Brown had a game-high RBI and was followed by Clarkson’s four. Brown also went a game-high 3-for-3. Nau delivered six innings pitched, allowing eight hits, six runs, one walk and five strikeouts. Bellefonte is now 8-3 on the year.
Penns Valley: Penns Valley dropped to 2-6 on the year, following three losses to St. Marys, Tyrone and Bellefonte. The Lady Rams were defeated 4-0 by St. Marys on April 25, 10-7 by Tyrone on April 26 and 23-6 by Bellefonte on April 29.
Philipsburg-Osceola: Philipsburg-Osceola took a 10-3 loss to Bald Eagle on April 26. Karissa Taylor took the loss for P-O, pitching two and a third innings, allowing nine runs on seven hits and striking out one. Paige Jarrett led the Lady Mounties in hits, going 2-for-4.
The Lady Mounties defeated Tyrone 3-2. Alivia Bizzarri allowed just six hits to Tyrone. MyKenna Bryan went 2-for-2 at the plate to lead P-O in hits. P-O is now 2-6 on the year.
State College: State College improved to 5-1 on the year with 10-0 victory over Red Land on April 28.
Tennis
State College: Mark Sandow won 6-0, 6-0 in the District 6 AAA second round and advanced onto the third round, winning 6-3, 6-1. He lost to David Lindsey 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals. Matt Labosky won his first match 6-0, 6-2 and lost in the second round 6-1, 6-0.
State College defeated Mercersburg 7-2 on April 28. Mark Sandow, Daniel Xu, David Chong, Issac Die and Peter Novikov won their singles matches.

Track and Field
State College (boys): State College competed against Cumberland Valley on April 26. Charles Endres won the 1,600-meter race (4:31.85), John Sicree, Ryan Lindenberg, Dylan Grunwald and Nolan Markowski combined for a win in the 4x100 relay (44.43). Nathan Haas won the javelin throw (145-04.00), Ian Dorefice (13-00.00) won the pole vault and Landon Leidy took home first in the long jump (20-04.00).
State College (girls): The State College girls team also took on Cumberland Valley on April 26. Maya Hockenberry won the 3,200-meter race with a time of 12:37.96, Sarah Tate took home first in the 100-meter hurdles (16.25) and Shannon Mullin placed first in the long jump (18-08.00).
