HS roundup: Here’s what happened from May 2-7 in Centre County high school sports

Multiple Centre County programs excelled in the week with a few wins under their belt.

Bellefonte baseball continued its run by outscoring opponents 23-2 in two games. State College boys and girls lacrosse won both of their games this week. Penns Valley softball picked up three consecutive victories on the week.

Below are highlights from the week of May 2-7 in Centre County sports.

Baseball

Bald Eagle: The Eagles defeated Penns Valley 7-5 on May 3. Ethan Koleno went 2-for-3 from the plate with two runs batted in to lead the way. Bald Eagle is now 9-6 on the year.

Bellefonte: The Red Raiders battled to a 6-2 victory over Hollidaysburg on May 3. Alexander Ebeling went 2-for-4 from the plate with two RBI and Triston Heckman had a perfect 2-for-2 game. Derek Fravel pitched six innings, allowing one hit, two runs and six walks while striking out six batters.

Bellefonte marched to a 17-0 victory over Clearfield on May 5 to improve to 14-0 on the season. Ebeling, Trevor Johnson and Braedyn Kormanic each had a team-high three hits. Peyton Vancas pitched four innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out three batters.

Penns Valley: The Rams began their week with a 9-7 victory over Juniata on May 2. Hayden Houser and Miles Brooks picked up three hits in the win. Penns Valley lost 7-5 against the Eagles on May 3. Houser went 2-for-4 from the plate and Owen Miller had two RBI. The Rams were able to get back into the win column on May 5 in a 10-8 victory against Huntingdon. Colby Sweitzer had a 3-for-4 day from the plate with an RBI. Houser drove in three runs. Penns Valley is now 6-9 on the year.

Philipsburg-Osceola: The Mounties defeated Huntingdon 7-2 on May 2. Ben Gustkey went 3-for-4 at the plate. Colby Hahn and Parker White drove in two runs each. Nick Coudriet pitched five innings, allowing two hits, two runs (none earned) and three walks while striking out three batters. Denny Pretash pitched two innings, allowing one walk and striking out three batters.

P-O knocked off Huntingdon 3-1 on May 3 with Hahn and Dave Meersand picking up two hits each. Hahn pitched 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits and one run, walking one batter and striking out one. The Mounties are now 9-4 for the season.

Saint Joe’s: The Wolfpack knocked off Williamsburg 4-3 and 6-0 in a doubleheader on May 2. Jason Dreibelbis went 2-for-2 in the first game and Luke Duckworth pitched five innings, allowing seven hits and three runs (two earned), while walking a batter and striking out three. Evan Roach pitched a shutout in the second game, allowing three hits while walking a batter and striking out a batter. Saint Joe’s is now 6-5 on the year.

State College: The Little Lions improved to 7-7 with a 3-2 victory over Cumberland Valley on May 5. Jack Messina had two RBI in the game. Brady Bendik pitched five innings, allowing two hits, one run and three walks, while striking out three batters. Cooper Ryan entered in relief, pitching three innings, allowing one hit and one run, while walking five and striking out five.

Lacrosse

Bellefonte (boys): The Red Raiders lost 15-5 on May 2 to drop to 4-5 on the year.

Bellefonte (girls): The Lady Raiders defeated Lewisburg 11-7 on May 2. Molly McKee had seven goals and Elle Macafee had one goal and eight assists. Taylor Henry had two goals and Lexi Badger had one goal. Kayle Frantz had nine saves.

Bellefonte lost 27-1 against Danville at home on May 5. Ava Bressler scored for Bellefonte. The Lady Raiders are 8-3 on the year.

State College (boys): State College won over Cedar Cliff with a score of 15-4 on May 3. Joey Pollack had a team-high four goals and one assist. Cooper Brushwood had three goals and one assist and Branden Price added two goals and one assist.

The Little Lions defeated Lower Dauphin on May 5 by a score of 10-3. Price had three goals and one assist, Ryan Hawbaker had three goals and Brushwood had two goals and one assist. Zach Paterno had seven saves. State College is now 10-2 on the season.

State College (girls): State College defeated Cedar Cliff 18-8 on May 3. Sydney O’Donnell had four goals, three assists and two draw controls. Leah Moyer had four goals, one assist and six draw controls. Phebe Herlocher added three goals and seven draw controls. Mia Reese had three goals.

The Lady Little Lions beat Lower Dauphin 18-8 on May 5. O’Donnell led the way with five goals, one assist and one draw control. Moyer had four goals, one assist and five draw controls. Maddie Rottkamp also scored four goals and had two assists. Ella Tambroni finished with three goals and one assist. State College is 8-3 on the season.

Softball

Bald Eagle: The Lady Eagles lost 8-4 against Penns Valley on May 2. Sierra Albright allowed eight runs from the mound on six hits over six innings, striking out eight batters. Ava Stere went 2-for-3 from the plate to lead all batters.

Bald Eagle bounced back with a 7-2 victory over Hollidaysburg on May 5. Maddie Perry had a game-high four hits and Katelyn Smitchko pitched seven innings, allowing one run on five hits and striking out seven batters. The Lady Eagles are 4-5 on the season.

Bellefonte: Bellefonte defeated Hollidaysburg 3-1 on May 2. Josselyn Nau pitched seven innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out three batters. Madison Melius had a team-high 2-for-3 day from the plate.

The Lady Raiders edged out Tyrone 10-9 on May 3. Melius went 3-for-4 from the plate and drove in four runs in the victory. Bellefonte is now 10-3 on the year.

Penns Valley: Penns Valley defeated Bald Eagle 8-4 on May 2. Taylor Bumgardner went seven innings, allowing seven hits and four runs while striking out four in the win over Bald Eagle. Bumgardner also went 2-for-2 from the plate.

Penns Valley followed up by defeating the Lady Bearcats 9-6 on May 3.

The Lady Rams picked up a 6-1 win over P-O on May 5. Kailen Winkelblech went 2-for-3 from the plate. Bumgardner pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and one run while striking out five and walking one batter. Penns Valley is now 8-6 on the season.

Philipsburg-Osceola: Alivia Bizzarri led P-O to a victory over Huntingdon by tossing a no-hitter over six innings, while striking out seven and walking zero batters in an 11-0 win on May 2.

The Lady Mounties lost 6-1 against Penns Valley on May 5. Bizzarri allowed six runs on nine hits over six innings, striking out two and walking zero batters. London Cutler led the way from the plate by going 2-for-3. P-O is now 3-7 on the season.

State College: State College picked up two 1-0 victories against Chambersburg on May 2 and May 3. The Lady Little Lions’ comeback attempt was foiled in a 5-3 loss to Cumberland Valley on May 5. State College is now 12-2 on the year, leading the Mid Penn Conference.

Tennis

State College: Matt Labosky and Luke Shaha advanced to the District 6 Class 3A semifinals before being defeated 6-2, 6-3 on May 3.

Track and Field

Bald Eagle (boys): Bald Eagle defeated Penns Valley 82-63 and beat P-O 103-45 in their tri-meet with both schools on May 4.

Bald Eagle (girls): The Lady Eagles defeated Penns Valley 104-40 and followed up with an 81-69 victory over P-O on May 4.

Bellefonte (boys): The Red Raiders beat East Juniata 75-69 and lost to Altoona by a score of 115-35 on May 3 in a tri-meet.

Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte defeated East Juniata 117-27 and fell to Altoona 102-46 in their tri-meet on May 3.

Penns Valley (boys): Penns Valley defeated P-O 94-55 and lost 82-63 in their meet against the two schools on May 4.

Penns Valley (girls): The Lady Rams lost 96-48 against P-O and 104-40 against Bald Eagle in their May 4 tri-meet.

Philipsburg-Osceola (boys): P-O lost 103-45 against Bald Eagle and 94-55 to Penns Valley on May 4.

Philipsburg-Osceola (girls): P-O won 96-48 against Penns Valley in their May 4 meet with Bald Eagle and Penns Valley. The Lady Mounties lost 81-69 to Bald Eagle.
