HS roundup: Here’s what happened from May 9-14 in Centre County high school sports
The end of the Centre County spring sports season is nearing with a great deal of teams inching closer to their district playoffs.
May 10 and May 14 saw area teams take part in their respective league championships in track and field. Bald Eagle, Bellefonte, Penns Valley and Philipsburg-Osceola took part in the Mountain League Championships on May 10, while State College took on the Mid Penn Championship on May 14. Baseball and softball regular seasons concluded with many teams playing 3-4 games in the week.
Below are highlights from the week of May 9-14 in Centre County sports.
Baseball
Bald Eagle: Bald Eagle had a strong week, going 3-1. Their first victory was an 11-9 win over Tyrone on May 9. The Eagles followed with a 5-2 victory over Central Mountain on May 10 and a 6-0 win over Huntingdon on May 12. Bald Eagle lost 3-1 to Somerset on May 13 and is now 12-7 on the season.
Bellefonte: Levi Purnell was one of the bright spots in Bellefonte’s 4-3 loss to Philipsburg-Osceola on May 9, hitting a home run. Josh Brown, Purnell, Peyton Vancas, Kenny Squires, Braedyn Kormanic and Alexander Ebeling each had a hit in the loss.
Trevor Johnson drove in four runners in a 11-5 loss to Tyrone on May 12. Johnson’s four RBI came on a home run in the fourth and a double in the fifth. Bellefonte is now 14-3 on the year.
Penns Valley: Penns Valley shut out Hollidaysburg 2-0 on May 9 at home. The Rams defeated Clearfield 11-1 on May 12. Penns Valley lost 8-2 to Mifflinburg on May 13 and is now 8-2 on the year.
Philipsburg-Osceola: Philipsburg-Osceola defeated Bellefonte 4-3 on May 9. Dave Meersand was the winning pitcher for Philipsburg-Osceola. Meersand lasted seven innings, allowing six hits and three runs while striking out six.
Saint Joe’s: The Wolfpack defeated St. John Neumann 3-2 on May 9. Evan Roach got the start for the Wolfpack, allowing one run on two hits over six innings, striking out 18 and walking one. Thomas Delahoy went 2-for-2 from the plate.
Saint Joe’s defeated Northern Cambria 6-4 on May 10. Jason Dreibelbis pitched a complete seven innings, allowing four runs on nine hits and striking out six. Luke Duckworth led the team by going 3-for-3.
The Wolfpack notched another two victories on May 14, defeating Warrior Run twice in a doubleheader. Saint Joe’s won 7-2 in Game 1 with Dreibelbis pitching, going six and a third innings, allowing seven hits and two runs while striking out six and walking zero. Delahoy went 3-for-3.
In Game 2 of May 14’s doubleheader, Saint Joe’s won 5-0. Duckworth lasted six innings, allowing three hits and zero runs while striking out five and walking zero. Roach went 3-for-4 from the plate to lead his team. Saint Joe’s is now 10-5 on the year.
State College: The Little Lions defeated Williamsport 7-5 on May 9. TJ Yoder led the batters with a 3-for-4 day from the plate with three RBI and a double. State College fell 15-7 against Altoona on May 10. Tony Herzing went 3-for-4. The Little Lions notched a 6-1 victory over Cedar Cliff on May 12 with Ethan Schimony and Adam Cooper going 2-for-4. State College fell 8-3 against Chambersburg on May 13. The Little Lions are now 9-9 on the year.
Lacrosse
Bellefonte (boys): Bellefonte lost 18-3 to Selinsgrove on May 9. The Red Raiders bounced back with a 10-5 victory over Central Dauphin East on May 12.
Bellefonte (girls): Bellefonte defeated Midd-West 13-4 on May 11. Molly McKee scored seven goals, adding two assists and three draw controls. Elle Macafee had two goals, seven assists and seven draw controls. Lexi Badger had three goals and one draw control and Bethany Book had a goal. Kayle Frantz finished with 16 saves. The Lady Raiders are now 9-4 on the year.
State College (boys): State College defeated Palmyra May 9 by a score of 15-11. Branden Price led the way with seven goals. Cooper Brushwood had three goals and two assists. Ty Salazer had three goals and one assist. Owen Perry and Ryan Hawbaker each had a goal. Zack Paterno finished with 18 saves.
The Little Lions defeated Carlisle 12-11 on May 11, coming back from a 9-4 deficit. Price had six goals to lead the team. Leo Vandevort and Salazer both had two goals each. Brushwood and Hawbaker each had one goal and Paterno had 14 saves.
State College finished off their regular season with a 16-7 victory over Mechanicsburg on May 12. Price had eight goals and four assists. Vandevort and Brushwood each had two goals. Salazer, Hawbaker, Owen Kissinger and Kyle Cunningham each added a goal. The Little Lions are now 13-2 on the season.
State College (girls): The Lady Little Lions defeated Carlisle 19-12 on May 11. Leah Moyer led the way with seven goals and five draw controls. Sydney O’Donnell had five goals, an assist and eight draw controls. Ella Tambroni finished with three goals. Maddie Rottkamp had two goals and three assists. Phebe Herlocher had two goals and one assist. Grace Jones had six saves.
State College finished off their regular season with a 23-1 victory over Northern York on May 12. O’Donnell had a team-high five goals to go with two assists, two draw controls and three caused turnovers. Rottkamp had three goals and two assists, while Herlocher added three goals, one assist and two draw controls. Moyer had two goals and six draw controls. Tambroni and Mia Reese each had two goals of their own. The Little Lions are now 11-3 on the season.
Softball
Bald Eagle: Sierra Albright pitched seven innings, allowing one hit and zero runs while striking out nine and walking one to lead Bald Eagle to a 6-0 victory on May 10 against Tyrone. Sydney Thompson hit a home run in the fifth inning.
Katelyn Smitchko went 3-for-4 to aid the Lady Eagles to an 8-4 victory over Williamsport on May 11. Bald Eagle defeated Penns Valley 7-1 on May 12 with Albright pitching. She allowed three hits and one run over seven innings, striking out 11. Smitchko had another 3-for-4 day from the plate.
Bald Eagle defeated Huntingdon 15-0 on May 13. Marina Shawley was the winning pitcher, going three innings, allowing zero runs on four hits and striking out one. Smitchko threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Bald Eagle tallied 18 hits in the contest. The Lady Eagles are now 10-4 on the year.
Bellefonte: The Lady Raiders lost 8-7 against Central Mountain on May 9. Sienna Barnhart went 2-for-4 and Maria Cotter went 2-for-3 with five runs batted in.
Bellefonte bounced back with an 8-5 victory over Philipsburg-Osceola on May 11. Barnhart went 2-for-3 on the day with two RBI, while Taylor Brown had a home run. Carley Clarkson was the winning pitcher, going seven innings, allowing five runs on nine hits, while walking three batters and striking out one.
The Lady Raiders lost 12-6 to Tyrone on May 12. Madison Melius, Brown and Madison Ripka each had two hits. Bellefonte is now 11-5 on the year.
Penns Valley: Penns Valley fell 2-1 against Hollidaysburg on May 10. The Lady Rams lost 7-1 to Bald Eagle on May 12. Taylor Bumgardner pitched six innings, allowing 12 hits and seven runs while striking out three. Lady Rams trailed 3-0 vs Clearfield on May 13 and the game was canceled in the fifth inning due to lightning.
Philipsburg-Osceola: Alivia Bizzarri pitched four innings, allowing zero runs on two hits, striking out four, while walking zero in P-O’s 16-0 victory over Huntingdon on May 9. Paige Jarrett went 3-for-4 for the Lady Mounties.
The Lady Mounties lost 8-5 on May 11 to Bellefonte. Bizzarri pitched six innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs while striking out five and walking zero. Karissa Taylor went 3-for-4 with a home run.
P-O lost 5-2 to Central on May 12. Camryn Chverchko pitched six innings, allowing five runs on four hits and striking out six. Taylor had her second home run in as many days.
The Lady Mounties took on Hollidaysburg twice on May 13 in a doubleheader. P-O lost the first game 6-1. Abby Vaux and London Cutler each had two hits in Game 1. Bizzarri allowed eight hits and six runs over seven innings, striking out four. P-O lost the second game 11-1 and followed with a 14-2 loss to Clearfield on May 14. The Lady Mounties are now 4-12 on the year.
State College: State College defeated Altoona 19-2 on May 10. The Lady Lions followed with a 9-6 victory over Cedar Cliff on May 12 and a 9-0 win against Williamsport on May 13 to improve to 13-2 on the year.
Tennis
State College: The Little Lions defeated Altoona 3-0 with Daniel Xu winning sets 6-2, 6-2 in his individual matchup with Kadyn Corey on May 9 in the District 6 AAA team semifinals. Luke Shaha and David Chung won their doubles match 6-1, 6-2. Issac Dye and Jerry Zhang won theirs 6-1, 6-0.
State College went on to win the District 6 AAA team title with a 3-2 victory over Hollidaysburg on May 11. Mark Sandow (6-1, 6-4) and Xu (3-6, 6-4, 6-1) won their singles matches. Shaha and Chung won their match 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 and Dye and Zhang won 6-1, 6-1. State College is now 14-2 on the year.
Track and Field
Bald Eagle (boys): In the Mountain League Championships on May 10, Matthew Knepp’s toss of 126-02.00 in the discus throw was good enough for second place. The Eagles got on the board with a third place finish in the 4x400 (3:39.07). Kieran Jodon finished second in the shot put with a throw of 42.65 feet. Bald Eagle took home a gold and a bronze medal in the pole vault with Kevin Taylor (12-03.00) and Chase Thompson’s (11-03.00) jumps.
Bald Eagle (girls): Abby Hoover was victorious in the girls discus finals with a throw of 101-04.00 and her teammate, Katie Snyder, took bronze with a throw of 93-00.00. Hoover was barely edged out in the girls javelin, finishing second (113-00.00). Snyder also took bronze in the shot put with a toss of 29-09.25.
Bellefonte (boys): William Spratt had a throw of 43.25 feet for first place in shot put at the Mountain League Championships on May 10. Eric Bennett finished second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:08.50. Chase Ebeling placed third in the 1,600-meter run (4:48.09). Ebeling (10:17.30) and Caleb Vinnedge (10:27.49) took second and third in the 3,200-meter race, respectively. Bellefonte’s 4x400-meter team had a second place finish (3:38.70) and the 4x800-meter team took third (8:50.71). Landyn Miller took third in the triple jump with a distance of 41-00.00. Spratt also took third in the discus throw (124-06.00).
Bellefonte (girls): Emma Liadis finished first with a time of 13:11.23 in the 3,200-meter race at the Mountain League Championships and Ashleigh Aukerman took a time of 13:34.56 for second.
Penns Valley (boys): Micah Good won the 400-meter dash at the Mountain League Championships, with a time of 53:65. Penns Valley’s 4x100-meter team of Logan Crater, Zach Braucht, Tanner Ilgen and Good finished with a time of 44.76 for first place. Colin Niewinski also had a second-place finish in the javelin throw with a toss of 153-11. Braucht took second place in long jump with a jump of 20-2.5. Braucht finished third in the 100-meter dash (11.33) and Jack O’Donald placed third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.85.
Penns Valley (girls): Anna Stitzer took first in the 1,600-meter race with a time of 5:36. Abby Stitzer had a time of 2:28 to pace all runners. Alexis Durn also finished second in the girls 1,600-meter race with a time of 5:42 and the 4x800-meter relay team of Durn, Ann-Marie McMurtrie, Ayva Fetterolf and Abby Stitzer took second with a time of 10:58.
Philipsburg-Osceola (boys): Chad Muckey had a time of 4:32.67 in the boys 1,600-meter run to finish second in the Mountain League Championships on May 10.
Philipsburg-Osceola (girls): Kalista Butler had a javelin throw of 113-10.00, earning her first-place in the event at the Mountain League Championships. Reilly Vroman had a throw of 31-08.50 in the girls shot put for first. Kylie Timko finished third in the girls 1,600-meter race (13:52.32).
State College (boys): Little Lions senior Sean Adams blazed past the competition in the boys 800-meter race on May 14 in the Mid Penn Championship. He finished first with a time of 1:52.02. Nick Sloff (4:20.43) and Trent Dinant (4:22.62) placed second and third, respectively, in the 1,600-meter run. State College finished second in the 4x400 relay with a time of 3:23.43. Ian Dorefice had a second-place finish in the pole vault at 15-00.00. Mitchell Maher’s throw of 143-05.00 in the discus toss placed him in third. Maher also finished second in the boys shot put with a throw of 48-03.00.
State College (girls): Sarah Tate won the girls 100-meter hurdles in a time of 16.33 for gold at the Mid Penn Championship and Shannon Mullin had a first-place finish in the triple jump (39-01.75).
