State College softball won its first Mid Penn championship in school history with a 4-2 victory over East Pennsboro on Thursday.

The opportunity to push toward a victory came with stellar pitching from senior Zia Bodnar, according to a report from the Sentinel’s Tim Gross. Bodnar pitched seven innings of two-run softball, allowing just one walk, four hits and striking out nine batters. Sydney Wells got things started by slapping a pitch for a hit to drive in Jess Hawbaker and Mady Burkey for a 2-0 lead in the first inning, according to the report.

The Sentinel reported that State College found itself tied at 2-2 in the fifth inning with Olivia McTavish at-bat with Ava Bierly on third base. Bierly tagged following McTavish’s deep fly ball to center field, allowing Bierly to score. Wells later drove in Burkey once more for a 4-2 lead.

Following their victory, the Lady Little Lions were escorted home by the police and greeted by a number of family and friends back at State College Area High School. Sitting at 18-2 on the season, State College will await the winner of No. 3 Mifflin County and No. 2 Altoona in the District 6 Class 6A championship game on May 25.
