Who should be the Centre Daily Times Boys Athlete of the Week for May 16-21?

Editor’s note: The Centre Daily Times will publish a weekly poll on Monday mornings for readers to choose the Athlete of the Week for the previous week of competition. The poll will close at noon Friday.

Here are this week’s nominees for the Centre Daily Times boys high school athlete of the week presented in alphabetical order. They were selected by the CDT sports staff via stats compiled by the CDT or sent to cdtscores@centredaily.com.

Ben Gustkey, Philipsburg-Osceola baseball

Gustkey led the way for Philipsburg-Osceola with a 3-for-3 day from the plate in a 9-6 loss to Penns Valley in the first round of the District 6 Class 3A playoffs.

Eric Bennett, Bellefonte track and field

Bennett took bronze in the 800-meter race with a time of 1:59.95 on May 19 in the District 6 Class 3A championship.

Evan Roach and Jason Dreibelbis, Saint Joe’s baseball

Evan Roach took the start for Saint Joe’s, lasting four innings, allowing zero hits and zero runs while striking out seven in their 14-0 first round District 6 Class 1A playoff victory over Conemaugh Valley on May 19. Jason Dreibelbis pitched one inning of relief, allowing no hits and striking out one.

McClain Welshans, Penns Valley baseball

Welshans went 3-for-4 on the day with three runs batted in when Penns Valley defeated Philipsburg-Osceola 9-6 in the first round of the District 6 Class 3A playoffs.

Owen Irvin, Bald Eagle track and field

Irvin qualified for the state championships in two events in May 17’s District 6 Class 2A championship. He won the triple jump at 42’ 10.25” and finished second in the long jump.

Ryan Lindenberg, State College track and field

Lindenberg led the boys with a win in the 200-meter dash in a time of 22.30 and the boys 300-meter hurdles (39.68) at the District 6 Class 3A championship on May 19.

Ty Serb, Bald Eagle baseball

Serb went 2-for-4 with three runs batted in during Bald Eagle’s 5-2 first round District 6 Class 3A playoff victory over Richland. He also pitched two innings, allowing two hits, one walk and striking out two, while allowing no runs.
