Here are 5 takeaways from Week 8 of Centre County high school football
Week 8 of Centre County football featured each of Centre County’s teams playing against out-of-county opponents.
On Friday night, Bald Eagle defeated Huntingdon 51-0, while Penns Valley made a fourth quarter comeback to win 28-21 over Tyrone. Philipsburg-Osceola lost 27-21 to North Star and Bellefonte fell 55-16 to Clearfield. And State College remains undefeated after beating Harrisburg 20-6 on Saturday afternoon.
Here are five takeaways from Week 8 of the 2022 high school football season in Centre County:
Bald Eagle plays another complete game
The Eagles controlled their game against the Bearcats from start to finish. It began with Tre Greene’s rushing touchdown with less than a minute off of the clock in the first quarter and ended with backup quarterback Nick Wible’s long rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter with just 25 seconds left.
Bald Eagle’s defense was relentless, racking up five sacks, two turnovers and one defensive score. Offensive tackle Kieran Jodon even got in on the scoring action, taking a direct snap for a two-point conversion. Quarterback Carson Nagle threw for three touchdowns in the game and zero interceptions. Now the Eagles are 5-3 on the year.
Liam Halterman fights back in Bellefonte’s loss to Clearfield
The Red Raiders found themselves down 55-0 following the end of the third quarter when sophomore and backup quarterback Liam Halterman trotted onto the field. Not only did the second-year signal-caller get in the end zone, but he did it twice for Bellefonte. Halterman hit Mikah Reyes for a touchdown pass and ran the ball in himself from 11 yards out. While the Red Raiders fell 55-16, their sophomore quarterback may give them a spark going forward.
‘Mean’ Tre Greene
The senior Bald Eagle running back and linebacker will prove that he’s hungry for the end zone on a week-to-week basis. He immediately scored on a 34-yard rushing touchdown with less than a minute off of the clock in Bald Eagle’s 51-0 victory over Huntingdon on Friday night. He followed up with a 63-yard fumble recovery, where he stripped the ball from the running back and ran it past the goal line himself. Then, he had an 18-yard rushing touchdown to cap off a strong night.
Penns Valley proves that it’s a playoff contender
The Rams were down 21-7 at the end of the third quarter. As any Penns Valley team that’s led by head coach Martin Tobias has shown, they will not give up — even when staring into the face of defeat. It all started with Penns Valley quarterback Jackson Romig. The junior went 15-of-26 on passes for 297 yards and three passing touchdowns. Each of his three touchdowns came in the fourth quarter with the game-winning toss going to Miles Brooks for 34 yards. Penns Valley ultimately won 28-21 and are now 6-2 on the season.
State College continues its undefeated push
The Little Lions defeated Harrisburg 20-6 on Saturday. While they missed the Penn State game, they didn’t miss on the field. Harrisburg couldn’t move the ball like they had entering the game and State College beat up a previously 5-1 opponent with their own rushing game.
