Here are 5 takeaways from Week 9 of Centre County high school football
The second to last week of the regular season of high school football in Centre County is over.
Four of five of the teams won on Friday night, the first time this year. State College won 48-31 over Cumberland Valley, Bald Eagle stuck to its offensive screen game in the team’s 35-7 victory over Wellsboro, Penns Valley’s defense was relentless in its 56-0 win against Midd-West and Philipsburg-Osceola notched its second win in a 64-7 blowout over Montgomery. Bellefonte fell 65-0 to Danville.
Here are five takeaways from Week 9 of the 2022 high school football season in Centre County:
Bald Eagle keeps up its fast-paced scoring
The Eagles have scored within the first minute of the game in back-to-back weeks. In their Oct. 14 matchup with Huntingdon, they walloped the Bearcats 51-0. Then, the Eagles came back this week with a 35-7 smack down on Wellsboro. Bald Eagle has shown that getting off to a fast start sets the tone for the remainder of the game and it’s a reversal from the team’s 0-2 start.
Bellefonte is no match for Danville
Danville is arguably the best team in the state and it should come as no surprise that they won 65-0 against Bellefonte. It’s nothing to hold over the Red Raiders’ heads because the Ironmen are a magnificent, powerful and explosive team. Bellefonte has one more game left against Brookville. That’s a chance to fire back on all cylinders to end the season with a bang.
Penns Valley holds Midd-West scoreless
The Rams were looking to use their game against the Mustangs as a tune up game ahead of a matchup against Bellwood-Antis on Oct. 28. Penns Valley’s offense not only tuned up, but the defense turned up. Every opportunity that Midd-West had to move the ball downfield was nullified. The Mustangs had chance in the game and was much in part to Penns Valley’s strong defensive play. After the Rams’ 56-0 victory, they will take on the 6-3 Blue Devils and look to go 8-2 ahead of the playoffs.
Philipsburg-Osceola crushed Montgomery
The Mounties were looking for their second win of the season against Montgomery. Just like Bald Eagle, they got off to a hot start that included a 21-0 lead. Philipsburg-Osceola has looked capable of making big plays at times this season. The team put it all on display on Friday, crushing its opponent 64-7. Jakodi Jones, Dayton Barger and Sam McDonald each had two scores and six total players had a touchdown. It was a near-perfect showing for the Jeff Vroman-led squad.
State College finds another way to win big
The Little Lions have won every single game that they’ve played in this season. Their 9-0 start has seen its fair share of blowouts, two-touchdown victories and a number of close calls. State College found itself trailing before answering with 34 unanswered points against Cumberland Valley to win 48-31. It doesn’t hurt to have an option combo of senior quarterback Finn Furmanek and freshman running back D’Antae Sheffey either.
