Poll results: Philipsburg-Osceola basketball player selected as CDT Boys Athlete of the Week

A Philipsburg-Osceola basketball player who hit a career milestone last month is the boys athlete of the week for Jan. 23-29, as selected by readers of CentreDaily.com.

Jacob DeSimone had 19 points in a 57-49 loss to Huntingdon on Jan. 27. The senior also notched his 1,000th point before the end of the third quarter. He had 53% of the vote (1,413 votes).

Here were the other nominees:

Braeden Shrewsberry, State College boys basketball: Shrewsberry led the Mid Penn Conference in scoring (17.5 points per game), assists (3.3 per game), free throw percentage (92%) and made 3-point field goals (41), is second in steals (1.5 per game) and fourth in rebounds (4.9 per game).

Charlie Yartz, Saint Joseph’s Catholic boys basketball: Yartz fills up the stat sheet for the Wolfpack. He averages 16.5 points per game, ranking fourth in the Tri Valley Athletic Association, is 10th in assists (24), fifth in rebounds (70) and 10th in made 3-point field goals (15). He came in second in the poll, with 20% of the vote (539 votes).

Coen Bainey, Bald Eagle wrestling: Bainey (127) pinned Juniata Valley’s Lucas Dick in 33 seconds to make the quarterfinals and picked up his 120th career win. Bainey then beat Tyrone’s Remington Fleck in 49 seconds to make the semifinals. He shut out Midd-West’s Matthew Smith 9-0 in the semifinals.

Michael Lower, Saint Joseph’s Catholic boys basketball: Lower is second in the Tri Valley Athletic Association in scoring with 18.6 points per game. He additionally ranks third in free throw percentage (80.77) and first in 3-point field goals made (31).

Sam Huggins, State College boys swimming: Huggins finished first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.83 and first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:35.73) in State College’s victory over Cumberland Valley on Jan. 24. His finishes put him at second in the state for both events.
