Poll results: Penns Valley basketball player selected as CDT Girls Athlete of the Winter Season

A Penns Valley basketball player is the girls athlete of the winter sports season for 2023, as selected by readers of CentreDaily.com.

Ann-Marie McMurtrie was the picture of consistency for the Lady Rams in the 2022-23 season. The senior forward averaged 14.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists and three blocks per game on the year. She was named the girls athlete of the week for Feb. 13-20, after scoring 11 points against Montoursville in a 34-14 loss on Feb. 14.

She took 62% of the vote in the poll, with 2,074 votes.

Here were the other nominees:

Angelina Grieb, Bald Eagle girls wrestling: Grieb finished in fourth place at the MyHouse Girls State Championships on March 12 in the 155-pound weight class. She defeated Chichester’s Savanah Kirk in 39 seconds in the first round, followed by West Perry’s Marty Morrison in the quarterfinals, before falling to eventual champion Gabby Reid in the semifinals.

Aubrey Yartz, Saint Joseph’s girls basketball: Yartz won the girls athlete of the week poll for Feb. 6-12, as she finished with 17 points in a 35-27 loss to Philipsburg-Osceola on Feb. 9. She additionally had a triple-double on Feb. 3 against Upper Dauphin in a 44-31 loss — adding 17 points, 13 rebounds, 11 blocks, an assist and three steals in the game.

Bellefonte girls swimming: The Lady Raiders finished 16th in the PIAA Class 2A state championships with a score of 46. Kiaha McCool went for a time of 1:55.57 in the girls 200-yard freestyle for fifth and Kate Rarrick made it on the podium with a time of 5:17.94 in the girls 500-yard freestyle. The team came in second in the poll, with 1,220 votes (37%).

Isabella Duvall, Philipsburg-Osceola girls wrestling: In her first trip to the state championships, Duvall began with a 4-1 victory over Canon-McMillan’s Leilani Ramos, but fell to the consolation bracket after a 9-1 loss to Cumberland Valley’s Eliana White-Vega. The junior P-O wrestler fought back to win 2-0 over Whitehall’s Ruth Rivera, took down Selinsgrove’s Anna Kalcich 3-0 and she ended up with a sixth-place finish.

Jordyn Steindl, State College girls basketball: Steindl was nominated for girls athlete of the week three times this season. She had a team-high 19 points and 11 rebounds in State College’s 64-49 loss to Mifflin County on Feb. 20 in the District 6 Class 6A semifinals.

Khendyl Sharrer, Philipsburg-Osceola girls basketball: Sharrer led her team in points (6.9), rebounds (8.8) and steals (6) per game in the 2022-23 season. Her best night was against Bellefonte on Jan. 10 in a 59-32 loss, where she had 14 points.

Maggie Delaney, Penns Valley girls swimming: Delaney finished in sixth place at the PIAA Class 2A championship with a time of 1:06.02 in the girls 100-yard breaststroke. Penns Valley finished 44th.

State College girls swimming: State College girls swimming finished with a state championship in the 200-yard medley relay. Jade Castro, Madison Watschke, Ally Koehle and Molly Workman won gold in 1:42.99. Workman later won two individual bronze medals, along with a silver medal in the 200-yard relay with teammates Watschke, Kelly Brownstead and Castro. Castro took home a silver medal in the 100-yard backstroke for her team to finish fourth overall in the PIAA Class 3A state championships.

Taylor Brown, Bellefonte girls basketball: Brown had 17 points in a 59-32 win over Philipsburg-Osceola on Jan. 10 and went on to win the girls athlete of the week poll from Jan. 10-16.
