State College girls lacrosse trounces Central Dauphin East during Senior Night
State College girls varsity lacrosse celebrated its seniors on Thursday evening and proceeded to put on a show in 80-degree weather at their school’s North Field.
The Little Lions defeated Central Dauphin East 18-0, after State College opened up the game with 10 goals in the first half. The second half was no different, with the Little Lions returning to the field to add eight more goals.
Ella Tambroni was efficient for the Little Lions — scoring three goals on three shots, adding three assists, five draw controls and no turnovers. She looked to return the glory to seniors who looked out for her over the years.
“I’ve just been extremely grateful for the seniors that have my back and we got the win for them,” Tambroni said. “I’m just really excited for the next game that we have.”
Not to be outdone, Maddie Rottkamp went 3-for-4 on shots, scoring three goals with two assists and a ground ball. It was just another day’s work for the team in her eyes and an opportunity to continue efficient play, just as Tambroni did.
“Today we knew what the game was going to look like, having played the team before,” Rottkamp said. “I think we kind of wanted to focus on the little stuff, getting it cleaned up and having composure during the game. We wanted to play together as a team, play for the seniors and everyone else to have a great outcome like we did tonight.”
Many other players scored, including Marina Dunlap (one goal), Casidy Cohagan (1), Mia Reese (2), Caitlyn Keiter (2), Annika Bechtel (2), Madison Fry (1), Lily Sidwell (1) and McKenna Whitehurst (2). Macey Mitchell and Madison Fry added an assist each, while Molly Schreiner had a draw control, Hannah Garlin had three, Reese had four, Katie Fry and Whitehurst added one.
As State College girls lacrosse begins its approach to the playoffs, Little Lions head coach Tara Hohenshelt believes that the team is prepared to compete. It’s even more special for Hohenshelt that she’s sending off a group of seniors that entered the program four years ago, when she took over the role as head coach.
“These seniors were freshmen and it’s just so rewarding for me as their coach to see them on their first day of their high school season, coming to today where they are leading, they’re guiding, they’re performing for the good of the team,” Hohenshelt said. “I’m just really proud of the leadership and development that they show every day.”
The Little Lions are now 6-6 this season. State College’s next game is against Red Land on April 27, where the Little Lions will host Mental Health Awareness Night.
