Poll results: A Penns Valley boys basketball player is the athlete of the week for Jan. 15-21

A Penns Valley boys basketball player was the Centre County athlete of the week for Jan. 15-21, according to readers of CentreDaily.com.

Fletcher Ironside, Penns Valley boys basketball’s leading scorer, helped earn the Rams a win in the waning moments during the nomination week. Ironside, who is averaging 15 points per game, scored 20 points, including a game-winning shot with three seconds on the clock to help Penns Valley defeat Clearfield, 42-41.

Of the 22,072 votes cast in the poll, Ironside had 50% (11,118 votes).

Here were the other nominees:

Lilly Smith, Penns Valley girls basketball: Penns Valley girls basketball’s Lilly Smith led the Rams in scoring during the week. She had a career high of 22 points against Clearfield and added 13 more points against Richland.

Jacee Cunningham, Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy girls basketball: Saint Joseph’s Catholic Academy girls basketball remained undefeated during the nomination week, winning its lone game against Millersburg. Jacee Cunningham led the way for the program with 13 points, 11 rebounds and four assists in the game. She’s 11th in the league in scoring, sixth in assists and fifth in rebounds.

Marcus Gable, Philipsburg-Osceola boys wrestling: Philipsburg-Osceola boys wrestling’s Marcus Gable improved to 25-2 on the season by going 4-0 during the week — including winning his 100th match of his high school career. With 9,048 votes, he came in second place in the poll.

Jacob McConnell, Bellefonte boys basketball: Bellefonte boys basketball’s Jacob McConnell led the way for the Raiders the week. He averaged 11.5 points per game while pulling down a total of 14 rebounds and dishing out seven assists.
