Poll results: State College football player named Centre County athlete of the week

In the first Centre Daily Times athlete of the week poll of the fall sports season, State College football quarterback Eddie Corkery had the most votes from CDT readers.

State High football dominated Altoona in the second week of the regular season with plenty of help from Corkery, the senior quarterback. Corkery completed 10 of his 15 passing attempts for 238 yards and six touchdowns while only playing in two quarters of the team’s 57-0 blowout win.

In a poll with 318 participants, Corkery had 93% of the vote (296 votes).

Below is a look at the other nominees, which were submitted by school athletic directors:

Sybil Thompson, Bald Eagle Area girls soccer: Bald Eagle Area girls soccer earned two wins to start the season and did so in part because of Sybil Thompson’s goal scoring prowess. Thompson scored a hat trick in the team’s 4-2 win over Tyrone before scoring five more against Philipsburg-Osceola in an 8-1 win — giving her eight goals for the week.

Maddyx Hampton, Philipsburg-Osceola girls golf: Philipsburg-Osceola golf’s Maddyx Hampton shot her career best at Clearfield Curwensville Country Club, firing a 43 to earn the medalist for the day — earning the honor by three strokes over golfers from Clearfield, Bishop McCort and Bellefonte.

Ella Tambroni, State College field hockey: State College field hockey went 3-1 in the opening week of the 2024 season and was led by Ella Tambroni. Tambroni, a Michigan State field hockey commit, scored three goals, including a game-winning penalty stroke in overtime in a 3-2 win over Cedar Cliff.

Carson Long, Philipsburg-Osceola football and boys soccer: Philipsburg-Osceola’s Carson Long continued to help the school’s football and boys soccer teams this fall season. He scored eight goals in two soccer matches and added an extra point for the football team.

Grady Fisher, Bald Eagle football: Bald Eagle football’s Grady Fisher had a big performance in his second varsity start. Fisher caught six passes for 211 yards and two touchdowns in the team’s 39-14 win over Central Cambria.

Voting for this poll ended Sunday night. As a reminder, the poll is not scientific and just for fun. In fact, we invite you to vote as many times as you want. Look for future polls at CentreDaily.com.
