Centre County wrestling teams combine for 13 District 6 Class 2A semifinalists

The individual postseason is underway for three Centre County high school wrestling teams.

Friday was the start of the District 6 Class 2A Championships, where Bald Eagle Area, Penns Valley and Philipsburg-Osceola competed. The championships end on Saturday, but Bellefonte and State College get their postseasons rolling in the Class 3A Championships on the same day.

Here’s a look at how the Eagles, Rams and Mounties sit after day one:

Penns Valley

Team score: 2nd, 103 points

Semifinalists: Evan Lisowski (107 pounds), Max Dinges (114), Conner Myers (121), Erik Carlile (127), Brayden Lisowski (160)

Others alive: Tripp Watson (133), Zach Rummel (139), Sawyer Fetterolf (145), Landon Hess (215)

Eliminated: Seth Fetterolf (2-2, 152), Shane Rimmey (1-2, 189), Riley Winkelblech (0-2, 285)

Recap: The Rams couldn’t have asked for a better day one of the championships.

They entered 12 wrestlers, and have five in the hunt for district crowns. They also have four others alive in the consolation bracket.

“The goal right now is just to win and move on. Last year, we had nine get through,” Penns Valley coach Joel Brinker said, “a record for us, and that’s a tough thing to do. The guys wanted to hit that this year. It’s still out there for them to hit. They got to keep working their tail off. We got a couple tough ones, but that’s what it’s going to take to move on, winning some tough matches.”

All five semifinalists had dominating days tallying bonus points in their victories.

Dinges, Myers and Evan Lisowski each had a pair of pins. Brayden Lisowski and Carlile also had falls, but added technical falls.

Dinges’ fastest fall was in 47 seconds in his District 6 tournament debut. Myers hit a beautiful spladle late in his quarterfinals bout for a pin in 5 minutes, 20 seconds.

Evan Lisowski wrestled a total of 1:07 in his two bouts he had in his debut. His fastest was 26 seconds in the second round.

Brayden Lisowski and Carlile had similar paths — opening with pins and collecting technical falls.

“The five that are in the semis, we thought they could be. They took care of business, so we’re happy and pleased we got these five,” Brinker said. “Now, we hope to get as many of these guys in wrestlebacks to punch their ticket (Saturday) in their first match. We’re pleased overall.”

Bald Eagle Area

Team score: 4th, 72.5 points

Semifinalists: Tanner Guenot (121 pounds), Caden Judice (133), Dawson Lomison (139), Caleb Close (189)

Others alive: Liam Purcell (114), Alex Surovec (152)

Eliminated: Ty Corey (0-2, 107), Easton Grimes (1-2, 145), Chayse Kellender (2-2, 160), Evan Spicer (0-2, 172), Kyle Watson (2-2, 215)

Recap: Eagles coach Ron Guenot called the opening of the District 6 Championships “a mixed bag of results.”

However, he went on to say that it wasn’t too bad of a day, but there was still a sound of disappointment.

“We’re young, and inexperienced in some places. Growing pains can be tough,” Guenot said. “We just have to look at it like that. Hopefully, the kids respond. At the end of the day, they’re the ones that need to put in the extra time, what it takes to be successful. As coaches, our job is just to tell them what they need to do to get better, and hopefully that they’ll listen and do that.”

One might not disagree with Guenot’s stance about it not being too bad of a day after seeing four BEA wrestlers reach the semifinals

Three of the four wrestlers had to wrestle two matches to get to their end points, but that’s just how brackets pan out at times.

Tanner Guenot, Judice and Close were those wrestlers to have multiple matches. Guenot was the most dominant of the three as he had a pair of pins to make the semifinals.

Judice and Close had the same paths as they opened with some falls and technical falls in the quarterfinals.

Lomison had the luck of the draw since he only needed to wrestle one match, which was an 11-2 major decision.

“It’s the four that have had a great year for us. I know they’re happy to have their ticket punched,” coach Guenot said, “but they have to continue on their quest to get to their goals. They’re going to have to take it one at a time, and not be happy with just being in regionals.”

Philipsburg-Osceola’s Averi Gable controls Central Cambria’s Burke Niebauer in their 127-pound quarterfinals match of the District 6 Class 2A Championships on Friday in Altoona. Gable racked up a 12-3 major decision on Niebauer.

Philipsburg-Osceola

Team score: 7th, 62 points

Semifinalists: Caleb Hummel (114 pounds), Averi Gable (127), Ace Foster (133), Conner Guenot (139)

Others alive: Colton Chapman (172)

Eliminated: Bradley Peters (0-2, 107), Memphis Twoey (1-2, 121), Hunter Kephart (1-2, 145), Mason Packer (0-2, 152), Brody Jasper (0-2, 160), Conner Eichenlaub (1-2, 189), Evan Eichenlaub (3-2, 215)

Recap: The Mounties entered 12 wrestlers into the district championships, and saw one-third of those reach the semifinals.

Hummel, Foster and Gable each tallied bonus points in their victories en route to becoming a semifinalist.

Hummel and Foster each recorded a pin and technical fall.

“Caleb controlled the pace, and scored a lot of points. Avery, we talked about sticking to some basics, he did that from the beginning to the end,” P-O coach Justin Fye said.

Gable, who was the No. 5 seed, opened his tournament with a 21-5 technical fall, and then racked up a 12-3 major decision over the No. 4 seed.

However, it’s not always all about bonus points, just see Guenot as an example. Yes, he opened with a fall in 47 seconds, but in the quarterfinals, he did what he needed to do in order to collect a 12-6 victory.

“Ace lost to that kid last year in district duals, but he put in the work since last season to get to this point,” Fye said. “Connor Guenot controlled that quarterfinal match. It didn’t end how he wanted it to end there, but he had a really good day.”

Even though Fye saw seven of his wrestlers not make the second day, he still was pleased with his squad’s overall performance.

“I thought it was a good day overall. Coming in, seeing where our seeds were, I knew there were a lot of scratches,” he explained, “so some of the guys we were prepared for, we had to kind of change some of our strategies and stuff. I thought every single kid wrestled well.”
