High School Sports

It’s almost time for high school football in Centre County. Get ready with us

As hard as it is to believe, fall is fast approaching. Riding my bike on Westerly Parkway last week, I heard the State High marching band practicing. They’re getting ready for the return of Friday Night Lights, and we’re getting ready here at the CDT too. (Oh, and the band sounds great!)

This high school football season, we’ll have expanded coverage of Centre County teams thanks to a new collaboration with Penn State student journalists on a weekly newsletter.

After the Whistle is a student-produced sports recap show featuring Penn State Bellisario College of Communications students. During the high school football season, these student reporters fan out across the county — and beyond — to cover Friday night games. Their thorough sports recap show features top plays, highlights, scores, updates on rankings and more.

This season, they’ll be sharing this information in a new way for CDT readers.

Scores and recaps from each game the reporters attend will be included in a newsletter that arrives in your inbox at about 9 a.m. each Saturday. Here, you’ll also find photos from the games, and a “star of the week” that highlights an exceptional student-athlete. All you have to do is sign up here for the high school sports digest newsletter.

A story with the recaps will also be posted Saturday to CentreDaily.com, but newsletter subscribers get first access.

If you’re looking for scores even faster, check our Instagram page late Friday night. And for a full look at games, visit After the Whistle’s site to watch their episodes.

Many of our readers have asked for more coverage of high school sports, and I’m thrilled about this new partnership that allows us to bring that to you. I’m also excited to showcase the strong work of Penn State students who dedicate their Friday nights to producing content that’s important to our community.

Make sure to sign up for the high school sports digest newsletter before games kick off later this month.

And as always, thank you for reading and supporting local journalism.
