Centre County kicks off high school football season. See local scores, highlights
RB D’Antae Sheffey rolled up more than 160 yards in his return to State College and Bellefonte came back to beat Tyrone in the waning moments of the game as the high school football season got underway Friday.
Here are the highlights from Centre County games covered by After the Whistle, the high school sports coverage team at Penn State’s Bellisario College of Communications.
State College 41, Gateway 14: Sheffey’s return to State High after a season in Harrisburg was all Little Lions fans hoped it would be. The Syracuse commit scored two touchdowns in State High’s 41-14 victory. The Little Lions held Gateway scoreless in the first half, with all of Gateway’s points coming after State High had taken control of the game.
Bellefonte 21, Tyrone 20: The Red Raiders scored 14 points in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter to edge Tyrone. Bellefonte’s Jackson Long came up big on both sides of the ball, catching the game-tying touchdown and making a huge interception.
Philipsburg-Osceola 48, Central 24: Damarcus Law broke away for two touchdowns for 121 yards as the Philipsburg-Osceola Mountaineers defeated the Central Dragons 48-24. The Dragons recovered an onside kick after returning a kickoff for a touchdown to open the second half. P-O’s running back Colton Chapman led the charge in the short-yardage game with three rushing touchdowns.
Huntingdon 14, Bald Eagle Area 6: The Bald Eagle Area offense failed to take off against Huntingdon, handing the Bearcats their first road win in three years. Cole Lane made a pick-6 interception to give the Bearcats a lead they did not relinquish. Elliott Guisler scored the only offensive touchdown of the game and totaled nine carries for 45 rushing yards.
Bishop Guilfoyle 42, Penns Valley 18: Spencer Althouse’s 95-yard kick return touchdown for Penns Valley wasn’t enough to overcome Jake Kissell’s explosive rushing night for Bishop Guilfoyle. Kissell ran for 208 yards and five touchdowns in his first game as the Marauders’ starting quarterback, taking the mantle from his brother Chase who led Bishop Guilfoyle to a state championship last season.
