Which Centre County teams are advancing in the postseason? What to know
As we get deeper into the postseason, fewer Centre County teams are competing — but those remaining are inching closer to their respective state title games.
Bald Eagle Area girls volleyball, the District 6 champ, swept Hopewell 3-0 Tuesday in the first round of the PIAA Class 2A playoffs to keep their season alive. Meanwhile, State College girls volleyball watched its season end after a 3-0 loss to Pine-Richland in Tuesday’s opening round of the PIAA Class 4A playoffs.
Two Centre County high school football teams are also still competing in the postseason. Here’s what comes next:
This weekend’s games (PIAAs, Districts)
Girls volleyball (PIAA second round; Class 2A): Bald Eagle Area vs. Corry, 1 p.m. Saturday at Clarion
Football (District 6 championship; Class 4A): Bellefonte vs. Juniata, 7 p.m. Friday at Mifflin County
Football (District 6/10 subregional; Class 6A): State College at McDowell, 7 p.m. Friday at McDowell
What to know
Bald Eagle Area girls volleyball is coming off a District 6 Class 2A championship last weekend, but it won’t get any easier this weekend. The Lady Eagles are taking on District 10 champ Corry, which boasts a 42-2-7 record this season — with its only losses coming during respective one-set matches during tournaments. BEA is 27-7-2. ... Bellefonte football is eyeing its first district title and first state playoff berth since 2019. Juniata has won the last five Class 4A district titles, but both the Red Raiders and Juniata appear pretty evenly matched. Bellefonte is 5-6, while Juniata is 6-4. ... Because State College football is the only participating Class 6A team in District 6, it received a bye last week and will play McDowell in a subregional game Friday that basically amounts to a state playoff play-in game. The winner will advance to the first round of the PIAA Class 6A playoffs that will be set for Nov. 14 or 15.
Looking ahead at states
The first round of the PIAA state football playoffs is slated to start Nov. 14-15, and the championship games will take place at Chapman Field (Cumberland Valley) from Dec. 4-6. As far as girls volleyball, whose state playoffs are already underway, all the championship matches are scheduled to take place on Nov. 15 at Cumberland Valley. (The first match will take place at 10:30 a.m., with the last at 6 p.m.)
Check out highlights from Penn State’s Bellisario College’s After the Whistle once the football games are finished Friday.
