Centre County high school sports: Reviewing week’s scores, highlights & more
Winter sports are in full swing across Centre County, so we’ve again teamed up with Penn State’s After the Whistle to bring you scores and highlights from the area’s local high schools. Every Thursday, we’ll let you know what you’ve missed from the previous Thursday-Wednesday, along with what’s worth checking out on the future schedule.
You can sign up for our weekly high school newsletter to find those results hours before we post them here.
For those unfamiliar with After the Whistle, it is a student-produced sports recap show featuring Penn State Bellisario College of Communications students. These student reporters fan out across the county to deliver top plays, highlights, scores and updates on high school sports rankings — and our collaboration with them in the fall brought comprehensive coverage of the high school football season.
Boys Wrestling
State College 45, Chambersburg 22 (Jan. 22): The Little Lions started off down six points, but answered with 25 straight, thanks in part to two pins by Noah Young (114 lbs) and Luke Young (121 lbs). It was all State College from that point on, as the Little Lions’ lead ballooned to as high as 32. Chambersburg got some late pins and decisions to trim the lead, but to no avail, with the Little Lions coming out on top.

Boys Basketball
State College 62, Carlisle 53 (Jan. 23): State High beat Carlisle for the second time this season Friday night. The Little Lions had four players scoring double digits, with Micah James racking up 19 points to get them their 10th win of the season. Though the first half was slow for both teams, State High came out of halftime on a shooting streak, scoring five points before Carlisle had the chance to score one. Spencer Nielson, a senior for the Little Lions, was hot from three at all the right times, even giving State High a 10-point lead late into the fourth.
Bishop Guilfoyle 66, Penns Valley 41 (Jan. 23): Alex Krimmel had a total of 17 points to lead Bishop Guilfoyle back into the win column over Penns Valley. The Marauders had control of the game from tip-off, propelled to a quick lead by Grant Okonak’s six first-quarter points.
