Here’s what you missed this week in Centre County high school sports
On Beaver Stadium ice, Altoona’s Carter Panick scored a hat trick as the Mountain Lions upset State College last Thursday night.
On the court, Sienna Wilson scored more than half her team’s points Monday as State College girls basketball beat Williamsport.
Here are the highlights from local games covered from Jan. 29 through Feb. 4 by After the Whistle, the high school sports coverage team at Penn State’s Bellisario College of Communications.
Boys Wrestling
State College 34, Altoona 33 (District 6 Class 3A Dual Championships; Jan. 31): Three falls and two tech falls helped State College defeat Altoona in the District 6 Class 3A Championships. The win was much more comfortable than the final score showed, as State College coach Jason Nickal forfeited his team’s final three bouts. Luke Young pinned Dylan Swonger to make it 12 wins in a row. He followed Saturday’s win by beating Selinsgrove’s Anthony Snook to help the Little Lions advance to the PIAA Class Class 3A quarterfinals for the first time in 25 years.
Bellefonte 45, Hollidaysburg 28 (Feb. 3): Four straight falls from Jacob Horn, Wyatt Long, Andrew Gall and Ezra Swisher propelled Bellefonte to a comfortable win. With the win, the Red Raiders advance to 15-4, whereas the Golden Tigers fall to 4-6.
