Here’s a look at Centre County’s wrestling teams heading into D6 2A Championships
The high school wrestling season has flown by, and it’s now the postseason.
On Friday morning, Bald Eagle Area, Penns Valley and Philipsburg-Osceola get the individual postseason portion of their seasons underway in the District 6 Class 2A Championships in Altoona’s Fieldhouse.
All three schools made the dual postseason with the Rams getting the furthest to the PIAA Class 2A first round.
Here’s a look at how things get started for all three schools as the individuals will look to finish top-six to advance to the PIAA Southwest Regionals in two weeks:
Bald Eagle Area
Top seeds: Tanner Guenot (133 pounds), Dawson Lomison (152)
Others seeds: Michael Wesley (18th, 107 pounds), Ty Corey (18th, 114), Liam Corey (13th, 121), Liam Purcell (4th, 127), Logan Burns (13th, 139), Caden Judice (2nd, 145), Easton Grimes (23rd, 160), Brody Gardner (10th, 172), Gage Gardner (5th, 285)
Outlook: The Eagles have had an up and down season, but Guenot, Lomison, Judice and Gage Gardner have been consistent for them all year long.
Guenot, who committed to West Virginia, collected his 100th career win at the end of December will aim for his third straight District 6 title. Judice, who committed to Lock Haven, earned his 100th career win in Pennsylvania and his 150th career win overall this season. He moved from Louisiana after his freshman year in high school, and will look for another district crown after getting one in his first year with the Eagles.
Lomison looks to continue to climb up the podium after finishing fourth and third as a freshman and sophomore, respectively. He’ll have an opportunity to claim his 100th career win this weekend. Gardner had to miss the postseason last year due to an injury, but he’s back and looking to make the podium in his last high school season.
Penns Valley
Top seeds: Max Dinges (121 pounds), Conner Myers (127)
Other seeds: Evan Lisowski (3rd, 114 pounds), Erik Carlile (2nd, 133), Tripp Watson (3rd, 139), Isaac Harpster (14th, 145), Sawyer Fetterolf (5th, 152), Seth Fetterolf (12th, 160), Brayden Lisowski (4th, 172), Shane Rimmey (9th, 189), Robert Martin (6th, 215), Luke Tanis (14th, 285)
Outlook: The Rams had their first undefeated regular season in 60 years, and their light and middle weights are to thank for that.
They are missing their 107-pound wrestler in Caden Myers, who is out due to an injury, but Evan Lisowski, Dinges, Conner Myers, Carlile and Watson have rolled all season long. Brayden Lisowski, who has been in and out of the lineup with injuries, has been stellar too.
Carlile, who won a district title last year at 127 pounds, picked up his 100th win this year. Conner Myers, who got his 100th career win this season, will be looking to make the finals for a second straight year.
Dinges will be aiming to make the finals again, as he fell to Bishop McCort’s Eli Herring at 114 pounds last year as a freshman. Brayden Lisowski, who is a three-time district placer, will look to be in the finals for a second season. He also has an opportunity to get his 100th win this weekend.
Philipsburg-Osceola
Top seeds: None
Other seeds: Haydn Koptchak (4th, 107 pounds), Jacob Dugan (5th, 114), Caleb Hummel (3rd, 121), Devin Long (8th, 127), Ace Foster (8th, 133), Connor Guenot (5th, 139), Averi Gable (4th, 145), Brett Hahn (22nd, 160), Brody Jasper (15th, 172), Colton Chapman (7th, 189), Evan Eichenlaub (9th, 215), Connor Eichenlaub (11th, 285)
Outlook: The Mounties had quite the season, making the District 6 2A dual championship semifinals for the first time since the 12-team format was put in place.
They were led by Bloomsburg commit Caleb Hummel, who became P-O’s all-time wins leader at 147. However, Hummel didn’t stop there, as he has 151 wins going into his final postseason.
He’ll look to make the finals one more time in his last chance as he’s finished no lower than third in his career, and made the finals as a sophomore.
Not to be overlooked are Foster, Guenot, Gable, Koptchak and Dugan. Foster, who is two wins away from 100, will look for his third podium finish in his final high school season.
Guenot had a fourth-place finish last year, and missed significant time this season, but looks poised to make another podium run. Gable has been on the podium his first two high school seasons, finishing fourth last year as a sophomore.
Koptchak and Dugan are two talented freshmen getting a taste of the postseason for the first time.
