Boys Wrestling
Boyertown 29, State College 27 (PIAA Class 3A team consolation quarterfinals; Feb. 7): The Little Lions started off strong against the Boyertown Bears, leading almost the whole time, but a heavyweight comeback by the Bears flipped things around. State High won three of the first four matches, but Boyertown bounced back, defeating State High at 133, 139 and 145 pounds to bring the deficit within one. The Little Lions led 27-17 heading into the 215-pound match, where Boyertown’s Kaleb Dumin defeated Rhys Mitchell by fall in just over two minutes. At heavyweight the Bear’s Brody Ayres pinned Quillan Phillips, completing a miraculous comeback for Boyertown. The Beavers won it 29-27. But it was still a historic effort for State High, which hadn’t reached the team championship quarterfinals in 25 years. The Little Lions still finished within the top 8 of the state.
Franklin Regional 37, State College 23 (PIAA Class 3A team championship quarterfinals; Feb 6): Pins at 107, 152 and 215 pounds helped propel the Franklin Regional Panthers to victory over the State College Little Lions. State College was ahead early, leading 12-9 after Kael Davis defeated Franklin Regional’s Salvatore Nassif via tech fall. The Panthers defeated the Little Lions in six of the next eight matches on their way to victory, knocking State High out of the main bracket.
