State College senior Molly Workman took home four golds — for two individual events and two relays — and was named the Class 3A Girls Swimmer of the Meet in last week’s PIAA Swimming & Diving Championships at Bucknell.

Spring sports also kicked off this past week, as teams prepare for baseball, softball and lacrosse.

Here are the highlights from local games covered from March 12-18 by After the Whistle, the high school sports coverage team at Penn State’s Bellisario College.

Girls Basketball

Williamsburg 60, St. Joseph’s 41 (March 17): Williamsburg and St. Joseph’s Catholic Academy met in Altoona for the PIAA Class A semifinals on Tuesday, with the winner advancing to the state championship. The WolfPack led 13-11 at the end of the first quarter, but after that, it was all Williamsburg. The Lady Pirates took the lead in the second quarter and never gave it back. Senior LeeAnna Royer scored a team-high 16 points on the night for Williamsburg. Williamsburg plays Delco Christian for the Class A state championship at noon Friday.

Swimming & Diving

PIAA Class 3A championships (March 11-12)

The State College girls again impressed at states by finishing fourth in the team standings, led by dominant senior Molly Workman who returned home with four gold medals. On Day 1, the University of Virginia commit won the 50 freestyle with a PIAA record time of 22.22 seconds, and she anchored the 200 freestyle relay to a winning time of 1:33.11 along with Isla Reite, Molly Staniar and Ellen Woodruff. (The team of Reite, Staniar, Emmi Schwab and Gabby Siekman finished ninth in the 200 medley relay.) On Day 2, Workman won the 100 freestyle with a time of 48.48 for her third gold of the meet. The highlight of the night was a thrilling 400 freestyle relay where the team of Reite, Siekman, Woodruff and Workman rallied to win with a time of 3:24.98, beating Fox Chapel by six-hundredths of a second. That gave Workman her fourth gold medal and she was named the Class 3A Girls Swimmer of the Meet.

State College’s boys didn’t fare nearly as well as they battled a case of the flu. No boys medaled, and the Little Lions were short-handed due to the sickness.

PIAA Class 2A championships (March 13-14)

Four swimmers from Penns Valley and one from Bellefonte took part in the Class 2A championships and, while two were able to make their respective finals, none were able to make it to the podium.

Penns Valley’s Charlotte Delaney had the top finish among Centre County’s Class 2A swimmers with 12th place in the 500 freestyle. Her time of 5 minutes, 13.76 seconds was more than five seconds faster than her time in prelims. On the boys’ side, the Rams’ Jack Wolfe was 15th in the 100 butterfly.

Other Class 2A swimmers to compete included Bellefonte’s Sydney Fetters, in addition to Penns Valley’s Mila Klena and Eleanor Gillan.

Baseball

Bellefonte 14, Derry 1 (5 inn.; March 14): Bellefonte’s season started on Saturday with a dominant win at home over Derry. The Red Raiders put 10 runs on the board in the first two innings. Senior Issac Gall had four RBIs. Junior pitcher Zach Lehman threw five innings, giving up just two hits and one run while racking up nine strikeouts. Bellefonte won by mercy rule after five innings.

Postponements

Weather delays: Due to the recent severe weather — from high winds to low temperatures to snow — a majority of baseball, softball, boys lacrosse and girls lacrosse games were postponed this past week. Many season openers have been pushed back, so stay tuned for updates next week!
