State College boys lacrosse continued its dominance with a 17-7 win Monday against Central Dauphin. State College boys tennis also defeated Red Land 5-0 with dominant performances from Evan Zhang and Jude Cessna.

Baseball

DuBois 6, Bellefonte 5: Mason Dinkfelt and Brody Knouse ignited the Beavers’ comeback win over Bellefonte on Tuesday. After falling behind 5-1, Dinkfelt launched a pair of homers, including a go-ahead solo shot in the eighth inning, to give DuBois its first lead of the game. The junior went 3-for-4 overall with four RBIs. Knouse, a sophomore, came in relief in the bottom of the third and shut down the Red Raiders. Over 4 ⅔ innings, he allowed only two baserunners and struck out eight. For Bellefonte, junior Parker VonGunden went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, which included a three-run homer in the first inning.

Softball

Bald Eagle Area 10, Bellefonte 3: The Red Raiders had the homefield advantage Monday as they looked to end the Eagles’ three-game win streak. But, even with Bellefonte taking an early 3-0 lead, the Eagles wouldn’t be denied. Bellefonte pitcher Abby Herr held BEA scoreless until the top of the third when Bald Eagle Area stormed back to earn its fourth win of the season.

Clearfield 17, Penns Valley 5 (5 inn.): The Clearfield Bison picked up a dominant mercy-rule win Monday over the Penns Valley Rams. It didn’t take long for Clearfield to get going, as it broke things open with nine runs in the second inning, followed by another seven in the fourth. Penns Valley managed six hits, but eight errors proved costly.

Boys Lacrosse

State College 17, Central Dauphin 7: Trey Combs led the way for the Little Lions, notching 10 goals Monday en route to a dominant victory. State College controlled the game early, going on a 3-0 run just three minutes into the game. Up 6-3, State College tacked on four goals in the third quarter in just over a minute. Central Dauphin then went on a 4-0 run of its own to cut the deficit to 10-7. The Little Lions scored two more to end the third quarter to go up 12-7, then scored five unanswered in the fourth to put the game away. Both teams will face each other again on May 4.

Boys Tennis

State College 5, Red Land 0: The Little Lions delivered a dominant performance over the Patriots, winning every set on Monday in singles and doubles. The doubles duo of junior Evan Zhang and sophomore Jude Cessna won two straight sets, losing just one game within them. The best set of the day was between Aiden Finch for Red Land and Max Doran for State College. After losing the first game, Doran made a comeback and got the win for the Little Lions.

Boys Volleyball

Cumberland Valley 3, State College 1: Cumberland Valley continued to roll Tuesday, extending its undefeated start to the season to 10 games as it defeated State College for the second time this season. The first two sets were close, with back-and-forth scoring and minimal multi-point leads. The Rams capitalized on slow stretches from the Little Lions in Sets 3 and 4, going on extended scoring runs to secure the victory. State College’s Max Henning led the team in kills with seven in a breakout performance for the sophomore. Cumberland Valley won 23-25, 25-21, 25-14, 25-21. The conference rivals face off again on May 2.

Athlete of the Week

Every week, the staff at After the Whistle will choose one top player from the games they’ve personally watched and attended.

Trey Combs, State College, boys lacrosse: Combs has become a mainstay of this weekly honor, but it’s hard to find someone who fared better. He had 10 of his squad’s 17 goals in a 17-7 win over Central Dauphin on Tuesday.
