Both teams entered with only one loss each on the season, but Penns Valley boys’ basketball trumped Juniata on Tuesday night, earning a 51-38 win and seizing the Ram Winter Jam title.
Penns Valley coach Terry Glunt was pleased with how his squad played with cohesion. The Rams (8-1) benefited from seven different scorers against the Indians (7-2).
“It was another team win,” Glunt said. “They put things together as a team.”
Leading the Rams was center Zach Engle, who posted 21 points, four rebounds and a block. The 6-foot-7 senior was also named tournament MVP.
Three other seniors — Ben Alexander, Chase Collison and Logan Pearce — were also recognized on the all-tournament team. Additionally, Pearce was tabbed as the tournament’s outstanding offensive player.
Even though Penns Valley cleared Juniata by 13 points, it wasn’t an easy win for the Rams. The Indians actually held the lead at halftime.
But persistent play in the second half paid off for Penns Valley, as it outscored Juniata 32-16 in the final two periods.
“We battled. It was a chess match of sorts,” Glunt said. “We’ve had a good start to the year, but there’s still a lot of work to do.”
