Sekunda lifts State College boys’ basketball to win

Tommy Sekunda hit the game-winner with 2.3 seconds left to give State College a 57-55 win over Hollidaysburg on Friday night.

The Golden Tigers had tied the game with a free throw with 30 seconds left, and a play designed for Sekunda resulted in a shot bouncing off the rim, but Brandon Clark grabbed the rebound and the Little Lions called a timeout with four seconds left.

With the ball under the basket, coach Joe Walker drew up an inbounds pass from Tommy Friberg to either Drew Friberg or Sekunda. The junior had size and position on his defender as he rolled down the lane, took the inbounds pass and hit the shot.

“It was a good inbounds by Tommy Friberg,” said Walker, whose team trailed the entire first half and was down by 13 points at halftime. “That’s kind of how we drew it up. ... They’re a good team, very disciplined.”

The Little Lions (11-9) saw only five players score, led by 23 from Drew Friberg and 18 from Sekunda — all in the second half. Keaton Ellis added 10 points.

Jason Holsopple’s 22 points paced the Tigers (16-3).
