Cooper leads State College at PIAA swimming championships

State College senior Kate Cooper recorded an individual and relay podium finish to lead the Lady Little Lions at the PIAA Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday at Bucknell University.

State College finished the first day of the championships tied for 14th place in Class AAA with Oakland Catholic with 35 points. North Penn is in first place in the 45-team field with 124 points.

State College’s 200-yard medley relay team of Cooper, Juliet Garrigan, Grace Tothero, and Fiona Vashaw swam to a seventh-place finish with a time of 1:46.97.

In the tight race, only 0.81 seconds separated third place through seventh. North Penn won the race in 1:43.87.

Cooper won the first individual medal of her career with an eighth-place finish in the 100 butterfly. The senior broke her school record with a time of 56.45 in the preliminary round. Her previous record was 56.92.

In the finals, Cooper record a time of 56.74 for eighth place. Maddie Hart of Haverford won the event with a 53.35.

The championships continue Thursday.
