Defending champs stop State College boys’ volleyball

State College finished third in its pool and fell to defending PIAA Class AA champion Northeastern in the quarterfinals at the Bobcat Invitational on Saturday.

The Little Lions beat Spring Grove and Council Rock North and fell to Whitehall and McDowell during pool play. They then beat Holy Redeemer in the play-in round before falling to the tournament hosts 15-6, 15-6.

“They did all right,” coach Kim-Li Kimel said. “We get in this place every year, where the lineup gets so screwy. We’re at the point where we’re still feeling each other out. It’s early.”

Gabe Avillion’s 38 kills and four blocks paced State College, with Scott Tillotson adding 16 kills, 18 digs and three aces. Noah Christie picked up 35 digs, Walker Stone posted 26 assists and Brandon Kuruzovich had 39 assists, four aces and two blocks.
