Wherley leads comeback win for State College boys’ tennis
State College’s Matt Wherley earned the winning team point to give State College a 3-2 win over Lower Dauphin for an undefeated Mid Penn Conference season on Friday.
After both doubles teams fell, the Little Lions were down 2-0. In singles, Nick Vanden and Fernando Del Castillo won their matches in straight sets to knot the meet and leave the day in Wherley’s hands. Wherley rallied to beat Josh Carl 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles.
“We knew this was going to be a tough match and the guys came to play today,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “Ultimately, this was an excellent win for such a young team and the guys should be proud of themselves.
