State College track & field’s Veronika Karpenko made her mark at the sport’s largest stage, winning the high school girls’ triple jump championship at the Penn Relays on Thursday.

Karpenko grabbed the attention of Franklin Field at the 122nd Penn Relays with a leap of 39-5.25 in the event. The Lady Little Lion edged Jody-Ann Petrie, of Jamaica, who posted a 39-3.25.

Karpenko wasn’t the only one to compete for the State College girls.

The Lady Little Lions’ relay teams — 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800 — all ran on Thursday.

The 4x100 team of Rachel Wylie, Taylor Givens, Zoe Wicks and Haley Crawford finished 31st out of 250 in the “large schools” division with a time of 49.54.

In the 4x400, State College’s Wylie, Wicks, Natasha Fedkina and Jordan Rohrbach finished fifth in their heat with a time of 4:00.37.

And the Lady Little Lions’ 4x800 team of Fedkina, Rohrbach, Catherine Curtin and Emma Simon placed 21st overall with a 9:30.62 mark.

The Penn Relays continue Friday, when the State College boys’ team competes in the 4x100 and 4x800 relays, and the javelin throw.
