State College duo advance to District 6 doubles finals

State College’s Matt Wherley and Owen Lloyd advanced to the finals of the District 6 Class AAA doubles championships by winning two matches Friday.

Wherley and Lloyd beat a team from DuBois 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and earned a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 win over a Hollidaysburg duo in the semifinals.

The finals are set for 1 p.m. Saturday. The Little Lions duo will face Altoona.

“Wherley and Lloyd played brilliant tennis today,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “They stayed focused, executed and played within themselves. They were ready to step up to the challenge today and will need to be just as prepared tomorrow. It’s going to be a very good match against Altoona.”

Little Lions duo Matt Bristol and Sankar Ramesh earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over a DuBois team in the round of 16 before falling to an Altoona pair in the quarterfinals.
